Hezbollah categorically denies report on its 'readiness to clash with state' over arms
by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 hours Hezbollah on Wednesday categorically denied remarks attributed to it by Al-Arabiya and its Al-Hadath channel about its 'readiness to clash with the Lebanese state' if it wants to remove its weapons. Hezbollah also denied what it called the 'other lies' reported by the two networks. 'These reports are totally baseless and are mere false accusations fabricated by the imagination of those channels to serve suspicious agendas seeking to sow confusion and undermine stability in Lebanon,' Hezbollah's media relations department said in a statement. 'Accordingly, the media relations department calls on all media outlets to ignore those fabricated reports and not to capitalize on them in analyses and stances, reiterating the importance of contacting the relevant department in Hezbollah to inquire about its stances and viewpoints on the events and developments, especially amid these critical and sensitive circumstances,' the Hezbollah statement added. Al-Hadath had earlier reported that Hezbollah's 'military wing' had informed Speaker Nabih Berri that it would not hand over its arms and that it is 'not interested in an economic conference or in reconstruction,' quoting unnamed sources. 'No one in Hezbollah's leadership can take a decision to hand over the weapons and Hezbollah will not implement any decision even if anyone pledges that,' the sources said. 'Hezbollah is saying that it will not turn in its arms even if Israel withdraws and that it is ready to clash with the (Lebanese) state,' the sources claimed, adding that Berri has informed U.S. envoy Tom Barrack that 'he does not promise that arms will be removed north of the Litani before the year's end even if Israel withdraws.' President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, however, intend to press on with 'declaring a pledge to monopolize weapons,' the sources said, adding that Aoun and Salam will not allow 'Hezbollah's intransigence' to prevent 'the return to the Arab and international fold.' 'The Lebanese state has been infuriated by Hezbollah's insistence on wasting the chance,' the sources alleged.

Lebanon Might Be Getting Electricity From Cyprus
President Joseph Aoun met with Energy Minister Joe Saddi to discuss a Cypriot offer to install a submarine cable that would deliver electricity straight from Cyprus to Lebanon The plan comes as the Lebanese Energy Ministry continues efforts to secure more stable power across the country. The project, if approved, could mark a major step toward addressing Lebanon's chronic power shortages and reducing its dependency on local fuel-based electricity generation. Electricity in Cyprus costs about the same; however, this would mean Lebanon getting a cleaner and more reliable supply. This supply source will weaken the local generator 'mafias' that have monopolized the secondary electricity market, providing an incentive for those in power to avoid finding a solution. More importantly, it reduces the load on the local generators, effectively outsourcing our population.

'Fruitful and useful meeting' between Joumblatt and Geagea
Former head of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) Walid Joumblatt met on Wednesday at his Beirut residence with the head of the Lebanese Forces (LF), Samir Geagea, who was accompanied by LF MP for North Metn, Melhem Riashi. MP Wael Abou Faour, a member of the Democratic Gathering bloc, was present at the meeting, which focused on political developments in Lebanon and the region, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA). At the end of the discussion, Geagea said that the meeting had been "fruitful and useful on all levels." He added, "May God do what is good," regarding the political situation in Lebanon. Geagea rarely leaves the highly secured Maarab compound where he resides, in Mount Lebanon. This meeting between the two political leaders comes at a time marked by the new visit to Beirut by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, as the thorny issue of Hezbollah's disarmament remains at the heart of debates on the Lebanese political scene and internationally. Recent clashes between Druze factions and Sunni tribes, backed by government forces, in Syria killed more than 1,200 in Syria's southern Sweida province and stirred up tensions in several areas of Lebanon.
