Evander, Kévin Denkey each score a goal, Cincinnati beats Fire 2-1 for 4th straight win

CINCINNATI (AP) — Evander Da Silva Ferreira — known simply as 'Evander' — had a goal and an assist, Kévin Denkey also scored a goal and FC Cincinnati beat the Chicago Fire 2-1 on Saturday night for their fourth consecutive win.
Cincinnati (13-5-3) has 42 points, most in all of MLS, and moved ahead of Philadelphia (40) into first in the Eastern Conference.
Evander took the ball near midfield, raced down the right side to the edge of the penalty area and then flicked a shot that bent inside the back post into the side-net to open the scoring in the 19th minute.
Evander, racing down the right side, bent a low cross between to two defenders and goalkeeper Jeffrey Gal to Denkey on the left side of the area for a first-touch finish into a wide-open net to make it 2-0 in the 50th minute.
Philip Zinckernagel put away a one-touch shot — off a cross played by Andrew Gutman — for Chicago (8-7-4) in the 55th to make it 2-1.
Cincinnati also beat the Fire 3-2 in Chicago on April 19.

Edson Álvarez's tiebreaking goal gives Mexico 2-1 win over US for 10th Gold Cup title

HOUSTON (AP) — Edson Álvarez scored a tiebreaking goal in the 77th minute after a video review reversed an offside call, and Mexico beat the United States 2-1 on Sunday night for its record 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup title. Chris Richards put the U.S. ahead in the fourth minute, heading in a Sebastian Berhalter free kick for the second time in the tournament, but Raúl Jiménez tied the score in the 27th with his third goal of this Gold Cup. Mexico was awarded the free kick when Diego Luna fouled Alexis Vega on a flank. Johan Vásquez flicked the restart across the goal mouth and Álvarez burst past the defense, redirecting the ball from 3 yards just inside Matt Freese's far post. While the play was initially called offside, the goal was awarded by the VAR, and Mexico defended its title from 2023 while improving to 6-2 in Gold Cup finals against the U.S. Patrick Agyemang had a chance two minutes into stoppage time but he didn't make good contact on his short-range shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Luis Malagón. Padres right-hander Yu Darvish set to make his season debut Monday night against Arizona

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish will be activated from the injured list and make his season debut Monday night at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Japanese star has been sidelined since spring training by right elbow inflammation. 'It really just comes down from a physical standpoint,' manager Mike Shildt said before the Padres finished a series against Texas on Sunday night. 'We always have an open day on the schedule for Yu Darvish to start.' Making a start Monday night will allow Darvish to make another start before the All-Star break. Darvish, who turns 39 on Aug. 16, threw a bullpen session Saturday after throwing two simulated games against minor leaguers in the last two weeks. Darvish missed significant time in 2024 with an elbow injury and a personal issue. He made five starts in September and finished the regular season with a 7-3 record and a 3.31 ERA. He pitched well in two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League Division Series, earning the win Game 2 and taking the loss in Game 5. The Padres went from having a 2-1 lead in the series to failing to score in the final 24 innings against the eventual World Series champions. ___ AP MLB:
