NANDI HILLS (CHIKKABALLAPURA): In a major rebranding move, the state cabinet Wednesday approved renaming of Bengaluru Rural district as 'Bengaluru North' and Bengaluru City University (BCU) as 'Dr Manmohan Singh University' in honour of the late former PM.
The decisions were made during a cabinet meeting held at the scenic Nandi Hills, 60km from Bengaluru, reports Santoshkumar B.
"We have also changed the name of Bagepalli in Chikkaballapura district to Bhagyanagar, heeding demands of locals and their elected representatives,"
CM Siddaramaiah
said after the meeting. DCM DK Shivakumar said the cabinet also took up key administrative issues.

The renaming of Bengaluru City University was also cleared, marking a tribute to the late PM.
The renaming comes just a month after Ramanagara district became Bengaluru South. The proposal was based on requests by deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, revenue minister Krishna Byre Gowda, and Bengaluru rural in-charge minister KH Muniyappa.
A senior officer present at the cabinet meeting said that removing the word 'Rural' from the district name will help the state govt to get fund allocations from the Centre, including the Union Urban Development Ministry under various schemes.

There are funds to be allocated to districts comprising larger urban areas. The Bengaluru Rural district is rapidly growing, and Bengaluru city expanded towards the north.
So, the govt decided to remove the word 'Rural' and replace it with 'North'.
These decisions follow an earlier move by the Congress govt to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South, in a continued effort to realign districts with the state capital's growing metropolitan identity.
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, who attended the meeting alongside Siddaramaiah, said the cabinet also took up key administrative issues, including mining oversight. "We have decided that the state cabinet should conduct a special investigation into the mining irregularities and submit a report within a month. HK Patil found some shortcomings. We have formed a cabinet subcommittee under the leadership of the law minister to protect our state wealth," he said.
In all, 48 subjects were discussed and projects worth Rs 3,400 crore were cleared, including crucial investments in drinking water supply. "The total revised amount for the Yettinahole project is Rs 23,251 crore, the amount spent so far is Rs 17,147 crore, another Rs 6,103 crore will be spent... After completing the drinking water project in the next two years, we will provide water to Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Bengaluru North and Bengaluru South districts," the CM said.

Bombay HC Dismisses Election Petitions Against Fadnavis, Mungantiwar & Other BJP Leaders

Nagpur: In a setback to Congress, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed multiple election petitions filed by its defeated candidates challenging the victories of Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis , senior BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar, and three other MLAs. The court ruled the pleas were not maintainable due to procedural lapses, including the petitioners' failure to be physically present during filing — a mandatory legal requirement. Justice Pravin Patil quashed five petitions filed by Congress candidates Prafulla Gudadhe, Girish Pandav, Satish Warjurkar, Subhash Dhote, and Santosh Singh Rawat. The pleas targeted the results from Nagpur South-West, Nagpur South, Chimur, Rajura, and Ballarpur constituencies in Vidarbha, respectively, alleging violations under Representation of the People Act and procedural irregularities in the 2024 assembly polls. "The petitions lacked essential particulars and did not comply with statutory requirements," Justice Patil observed, dismissing them summarily. In Gudadhe's plea, which specifically sought to annul CM Fadnavis's victory from South-West Nagpur, the court held that no evidence of corrupt practices or irregularities was demonstrated. Fadnavis won the seat by a margin of 39,710 votes. Petitioners' counsel Pavan Dahat and Akash Moon told TOI they would challenge the rulings in Supreme Court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! The legal move was part of a wider offensive by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), in which 27 losing candidates across Vidarbha filed similar petitions. Friday's verdict marks a legal and political setback for Congress, which accused the ruling party of misusing official machinery to swing elections. With this dismissal, Fadnavis, Mungantiwar, Chimur MLA Bunty Bhangadiya, South Nagpur MLA Mohan Mate, and Rajura MLA Deorao Bhongale all received legal reprieve as the court reaffirmed their victories. The petitioners had urged the court to declare victories of BJP legislators "null and void," citing non-compliance with mandatory electoral protocols by Election Commission of India. They argued ECI failed to issue a formal notification for using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and withheld key election records like Form 17 and CCTV footage of strongrooms. They also alleged absence of VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) verification, raising serious questions about transparency and fairness of the electoral process. He has been taken into custody in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. The action comes after extradition requests sent by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The next hearing in the case is scheduled for July 17. On that day, Nehal is likely to apply for bail, but US prosecutors are expected to oppose the request, officials told PTI. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD But who is Nehal Modi? And what is the case he has been arrested in? Let's take a look: Who is Nehal Modi? Why has he been arrested? The younger brother of Nirav Modi was arrested on July 4 by local authorities in the United States. The action was taken following a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol, based on requests from the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate. Notably, his arrest comes after a long legal and diplomatic process, during which Nehal tried to get the Red Corner Notice withdrawn, but his challenge was unsuccessful. So, who exactly is Nehal Modi? He is wanted in India for his role in the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, which is one of the biggest banking frauds the country has seen. Nehal was born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium, and speaks English, Gujarati, and Hindi. Nehal Modi has been taken into custody in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. Image: X He is accused of helping his brother, Nirav Modi, by moving and hiding the proceeds of the alleged crime. Investigations have found that Nehal was the director of Firestar Diamonds USA, a company that has since shut down. He was also connected to the Ithaca Trust, which was created to help fund and acquire property for Nirav Modi, according to India Today. The trust reportedly received money that had been moved from Letters of Undertaking issued by PNB into fake companies. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Officials said Nehal helped in hiding and shifting large amounts of illegal funds using shell companies and foreign transactions, breaking Indian laws in the process. He has also been named in the charge sheet filed by the ED and is accused of destroying evidence and 'knowingly and intentionally' helping Nirav Modi carry out the alleged fraud, officials told PTI. After the PNB case became public, Nehal, along with Mihir R Bhansali, a close aide of Nirav, allegedly moved 50 kilograms of gold and a large amount of cash from Dubai. The two also reportedly told fake directors not to mention Nehal's name to investigators. Nirav Modi fled the country in January 2018. Image: News18 The US authorities are pursuing extradition proceedings against Nehal based on two charges: one for money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and one count of criminal conspiracy under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD What is the PNB scam? Where is Nirav Modi? Nehal Modi has been named in the chargesheet filed in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case. He is accused of helping his brother, Nirav Modi, obtain fake credit letters as part of a multi-billion-dollar fraud. The Rs 13,500 crore PNB loan scam came to light in early 2018. It involved fugitive businessmen Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi, along with others, including some employees of PNB. Nirav and Choksi left the country in January 2018, just before the bank flagged the issue to the authorities. Notably, Nirav was arrested in the United Kingdom in March 2019 and has remained in a London jail since then. Meanwhile, Mehul Choksi is currently in Antigua and is involved in separate legal matters, including a case related to his citizenship. Mehul Choksi was taken into custody in April by Belgian officials. Image: News18/File Photo On May 17, the UK High Court said that sending Nirav Modi back to India to face trial would not go against his human rights. Although the court has approved his extradition, the process is still on hold because Nirav has filed multiple appeals to delay it. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Earlier this year, the Belgian government confirmed that 65-year-old Choksi was arrested in Antwerp after India requested his extradition. Choksi had challenged his arrest in a Belgian court and asked for immediate release, claiming there were faults in the process. The court dismissed his plea. National Herald case: AICC attempted to revive AJL, senior advocate Cheema tells court

New Delhi: Senior advocate R S Cheema, representing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi , on Saturday argued that the AICC was not trying to sell the assets of Associated Journals Limited (AJL) but rather attempting to save the institution which was part of the freedom movement. Cheema, in his arguments before Special Judge Vishal Gogne, quoted Mark Twain and Urdu poet Wasim Barelvi to drive home his rebuttal against the Enforcement Directorate 's (EDs) allegations. The federal agency has accused Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, as well as Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, and a private company, Young Indian , of conspiracy and money laundering over the fraudulent takeover of properties valued at over Rs 2,000 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which published the National Herald newspaper. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Can my friend (ED counsel) tell me why they were shy about placing the Memorandum of Association (MoA) of AJL? AJL was established in 1937 by Jawaharlal Nehru, J. B. Kripalani, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, and others," he said. "The AJL MoA said that the policy of AJL will be the policy of the INC. All through, AJL did not have profits. In the post-independence period, it was never a commercial institution. We (All India Congress Committee) were trying to retrieve an institution which is part of the freedom movement heritage. The problem was not recovering the loan (given to AJL); the problem was to revive it, to see that it comes back on the rails. AICC was not looking for profit from sales. This is a squinted version," Cheema said. Live Events Citing various allegations and raising objections, the senior advocate quoted Urdu poet Wasim Barelvi's: 'Wo jhoot bol raha tha bade saleeke se, main yakeen na karta, to kya karta (How could I not believe his astute lies?), eliciting laughter in the jam-packed court. Cheema said that in the present case, the court had to respond to a situation where the ED had selected and acted upon a private complaint by Subramanian Swamy . Noting that ED had alleged the proceeds of crime being enjoyed, the senior advocate said, "Enjoyed is a rich word they have used. Not a penny was being used." He said that it was the AJL which was engaged in the development of commercial spaces, besides being entitled to the rent. Regarding the allegations against the All India Congress Committee, Cheema said that the ED had not highlighted the fact that AICC was a huge body having a large number of members. He said that there was no factual basis to the allegation that in 2008, AJL had closed the publication of the newspaper and instead started acting as a real estate company. The senior advocate said that ED made "unwarranted inferences" against Rahul Gandhi by wrongly assuming that he was the person in charge of the affairs of the AICC as its general secretary in 2010. He said that according to the constitution of the Congress party, no general secretary could be held in charge of its affairs. Cheema cited the constitution, as per which, there were several general secretaries of the AICC at a point in time. Similarly, Cheema said, Sonia Gandhi , the then AICC President, had been wrongly inferred as the "person in charge" of the AICC when the loan had been assigned to AJL. Cheema also objected to the ED allegations that Young Indian, despite being a not-for-profit company, was not engaged in charitable activities. "What is the concept of charity? Giving food, and alms is what they think is charitable. Nothing else?" he said. Regarding the properties of AJL being usurped, the senior advocate said, "These are crude lies. We got that. What case are we looking at?... 750 crores, 2000 crores, 5000 crores, the ED has alleged. To quote Mark Twain: Lies. Damned lies. Statistics. I conclude," Cheema said. The arguments would continue against the other accused on Monday. The ED alleges the Gandhis held a majority 76 per cent share in Young Indian, which fraudulently usurped the assets of AJL in exchange for a Rs 90 crore loan. Earlier, on Friday, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi concluded his arguments on behalf of Sonia Gandhi. On July 3, Raju argued on the point of the chargesheet's cognisance, saying the Gandhis were the "beneficial owners" of Young Indian and acquired total control after the death of other shareholders. The ED filed its chargesheet against the Gandhis and others under Sections 3 (money laundering) and 4 (punishment for money laundering) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The chargesheet also names Dubey, Pitroda, Sunil Bhandari, Young Indian, and Dotex Merchandise Private Limited.
