Surfing-Hawaii's Bryan goes back-to-back in Western Australia waves
South African Jordy Smith won the men's event, stop seven on the world tour, by taking out California's Griffin Colapinto. The 37-year-old now leads the world championship rankings 18 years after making his tour debut.
While conditions had slowed on Tuesday after big, perfect surf earlier in the competition period, Simmers and Bryan started their final swiftly.
Simmers, 19, notched up a solid 7.17 out of 10 only to see Bryan use her trademark power on a series of searing turns for a near perfect 9.5.
Both surfers followed up their initial keeper scores with some mid-range numbers before Bryan notched up another solid wave for a 7.83 and 17.33 total inside the first 10 minutes of the final.
"I just went out there and was like, I've just got to surf my heart out, and that's what I did on that (9.5) wave. And then I was lucky enough to get a backup before it went flat, so yeah, I'm so stoked," Bryan, 23, said.
Smith, who joined the world tour in 2008 and is the oldest competitor on tour, also got off to a strong start, picking up an excellent 8.5 on his first wave after Colapinto garnered a modest 4.83.
With the ocean going quiet and needing a solid score, Colapinto waited in vain for another opportunity that never came, handing Smith his second win this year.
"I think it's just a testament to every day, keep showing up, trusting what you're doing," Smith said. "This year has really been about having fun and enjoying this, because it's not forever."
Colapinto finished third in the world in 2023 and 2024 but had a shocking start to this year, languishing near the bottom of the rankings before the start of the three-leg Australian tour.
The 26-year-old from San Clemente had two of the most memorable waves of the event - a near-impossible tube in an early round and the only perfect 10-point ride in a blockbuster quarter-final against Italy's Leo Fioravanti.
Trailing and needing a 9.4, Colapinto sped along an overhead wave and launched into a huge, full rotation aerial, greasing the landing as the shallow reef loomed.
The tour next heads to Colapinto's home break, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics surfing venue of Lower Trestles.
The top five men and women after the 11-stop tour will then compete for the world title in a one-day, winner-takes-all Finals Day in Fiji.

BRISBANE :Wallabies loose forward Rob Valetini said he cannot wait to get stuck into the British & Irish Lions at the weekend with his return from injury all the sweeter for the fact the second test is in his hometown of Melbourne. In the absence of Valetini, Australia's best player for the last couple of years, the Wallabies were bullied off the park by the Lions in the first hour last Saturday before fighting back to lose the first test by eight points. Valetini and lock Will Skelton both missed the warm-up match against Fiji and the Brisbane test with calf injuries but are fit to bring a bit more bulk to Australia's pack for Saturday's clash at Melbourne Cricket Ground. "There's a lot of hunger to get out there, missing the last two games was quite hard for me after playing most Wallabies tests for the last two years," the 26-year-old told reporters in Melbourne on Monday. "The Lions only come along every 12 years and I'll be almost 40 next time they come. But more than that, it's the hunger for the jersey. "It'll be awesome, I'm Melbourne born and bred, I'll have all my family there and to play in front of them will be awesome." Valetini dismissed the idea that Australia's lack of physicality in the first half in Brisbane means he will be carrying a huge weight on his shoulders on Saturday. "I don't really feel pressure or anything like that," he said. "I feel like it's just another game of rugby, something I've been playing since I was young. I just want to go out there and do my job. Whether it's carrying or tackling, I just want to do my bit for the team." Lions coach Andy Farrell credited his powerful back row of Jack Conan, Tom Curry and Tadhg Beirne with putting the tourists firmly on the front foot in Brisbane, and Valetini said he was looking forward to getting amongst them. "I was watching on the sidelines and all three were pretty involved, big boys and they did their jobs well," he said. "I was eager to get on the field, but couldn't. But yeah, that's the challenge for us this week, knowing what's coming and being prepared for it." There will also be a reunion for Valetini at the MCG when he comes up against another Melbourne-born player in Scotland centre Sione Tuipulotu. "I played through all my grades growing up with Sione, he was the guy you wanted to be in rugby in Melbourne ... and I was pretty shocked when he had to leave (Australia)," Valetini said. "It's been a wild journey for him to be able to come back here and play for the Lions against us. It'll be pretty cool to play against him and I'll probably try and get one up on him." Prop James Slipper, who played in the second-test victory over the Lions in Melbourne which levelled up the 2013 series, said he was delighted to have Valetini back on board. "His size definitely helps," the 36-year-old grinned. "Nah, Bobby's a really good player, he gives a lot of boys around him a lot of confidence just the way he goes about his business."

Owen Farrell to captain Lions in final tour match
BRISBANE :British & Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has named his son Owen to captain the team to face a First Nations & Pasifika XV in Melbourne on Tuesday, the last of the six tour matches they will play in Australia. Farrell junior was called up as an injury replacement early in the tour and will skipper the side from inside centre at Dockland's Stadium in his 20th match for the Lions. Scot Blair Kinghorn, the favourite to fill the number 15 shirt in the tests against Australia, starts at fullback having recovered from a knee injury which ruled him out of the series-opening victory over the Wallabies in Brisbane on Saturday. Irish centre Garry Ringrose also returns from a concussion layoff on the bench to stake his claim for a place in the test side for the remaining two matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday and in Sydney the following weekend. Henry Pollock, Josh van der Flier and Jac Morgan, who all missed out on test selection for Brisbane, make up a mobile back row. "This fixture gives players another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two tests," Farrell senior said in a news release. "The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection, they have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places and we want that to continue for the remaining two tests." Darcy Graham starts on the right wing having been called into the squad from Scotland's tour of the Pacific, while Jamie George plays at hooker after making his way to Australia from England's tour of Argentina.
