Vusi ‘Cat' Matlala caught with cellphone in cell

Tenderpreneur and awaiting trialist Vusi 'Cat' Matlala was caught with a cellphone in his cell in Kgosi Mampuru prison over the weekend, according to the correctional services department.
On Wednesday, department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the cellphone was discovered during a raid.
'One of the raids conducted over the past weekend led to the discovery of a mobile phone in Mr Matlala's cell. The discovery led to the department taking action, and the remand inmate was then transferred to the facility's C-Max section,' he said.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has alleged that there was a long-standing relationship between Matlala and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and that Matlala bribed the minister while he was under investigation for multiple scandals.
On Tuesday, News24 also reported that former police minister Bheki Cele stayed in Matlala's luxury Pretoria penthouse, despite Cele's denial of any business relationship with Matlala.
Matlala's company won a R360-million police tender while Cele was minister, and Mkhwanazi's revelations have triggered a national security concern, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to call for restraint.
He is also accused of arranging to have his influencer girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, killed.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy Needs to Rescue His Own Presidency

Ukraine's president, the comedian turned Churchillian war leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has backed down on his decision to seize control of the nation's anti-corruption agencies. That averts a potential disaster for his country, and he deserves some credit for making the U-turn. But what to do with him now? Zelenskiy's heroic armor has been shattered. His misstep should serve as a reminder that he wasn't a popular president before Russia's full invasion of February 2022, with an approval rating that hovered around 25%. It was his response to the war, both genuinely gritty and brilliantly produced by the presidential staff he'd drawn from his old TV company, Kvartal 95, that made him a geopolitical rock star.

EU urges Ukraine to uphold independent anti-corruption bodies; Zelenskiy signals swift action

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on Sunday for President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to uphold independent anti-corruption bodies, with the Ukrainian leader signaling that supporting legislation could be adopted within days. "Ukraine has already achieved a lot on its European path. It must build on these solid foundations and preserve independent anti-corruption bodies, which are cornerstones of Ukraine's rule of law," von der Leyen said in a post on X after a call with Zelenskiy. After a rare outburst of public criticism, Zelenskiy on Thursday submitted draft legislation to restore the independence of Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies - reversing course of an earlier bill aimed at stripping their autonomy. "I thanked the European Commission for the provided expertise," Zelenskiy said in a post on X after his Sunday call with von der Leyen. "We share the same vision: it is important that the bill is adopted without delay, as early as next week." Von der Leyen also promised continued support for Ukraine on its path to EU membership. "Ukraine can count on our support to deliver progress on its European path," she added.
