Columbus Chamber highlights public safety at quarterly meeting
Some of today's panelists included Chief of Police Stoney Mathis, Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman, Fire and EMS Chief Sal Scarpa and Muscogee County Prison Warden Herbert Walker.
Today's message was one of unity, as the panelists highlighted their joined efforts to protect and defend Columbus citizens.
'A unique thing about this is that you have all four of the public safety leaders here today. And we work well together.' said Sheriff Greg Countryman. 'And I think that that should be a good feel for anyone to know that we have public safety leaders who believe in working together for the for the benefit of those we serve.'
This was a part of a series of Chamber of Commerce events focused on the community. This year the Chamber has already held Mayor Skip Henderson's State of the City and a conversation with Fort Benning commander Maj. Gen. Colin Tuley.

Fort Worth police are investigating reports of theft from multiple units at the Cooper Apartments, more than a week after a massive six-alarm fire displaced over 800 residents. Anxiety grows after displacement Residents say the stress of being displaced has only worsened with the discovery of missing belongings. Unidentified access raises concerns One resident, who asked not to be identified, shared security footage showing unknown individuals entering her apartment around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. She said construction workers told her the people were insurance assessors, but security officers later identified one of them as their supervisor. "I'm really frustrated with the fact that strangers can access our units, but residents ourselves cannot access our own units and our own belongings," the tenant said. "It's really, really concerning that there's so much confusion with who's entering when, considering the reports of theft that have occurred since the fire and since them locking us out of our homes." CBS News Texas Police increase patrols in area Fort Worth police have placed extra patrols around the apartment complex as the investigation continues. "It's like, where are the items? If it's just laid out on the table, and you can't find the items, then it must be missing," the tenant said. "We just really want everyone to be aware of how unorganized and unsafe I feel this situation is. I don't think enough people know what's going on with all the different moving parts — especially the fact that we can't access our unit." Management has not responded The apartment management company did not return messages seeking comment.

Man re-arrested on child pornography charges at Winnipeg air force base
A man has been taken back into custody, months after he was arrested at a Winnipeg air force base on a charge of invitation to sexual touching and other child pornography-related charges. The 31-year-old was re-arrested Wednesday after police searched a residence at 17 Wing, a Royal Canadian Air Force Base in west Winnipeg, police said in a news release. Multiple electronic devices were seized during the search. He now faces more charges of accessing child pornography and possession of child pornography, as well as seven counts of failure to comply with a release order. The man had been arrested at the base on April 16, following a child pornography investigation. He was accused of photographing an undressed child he knew and uploading the images to social media between May 2018 and April 2019. The man allegedly persuaded the child to engage in sexual activity in 2020. Winnipeg police told CBC News at that point the 31-year-old was not a civilian. He was released under conditions that included not accessing the internet or having access to anyone under 18 years old. Police said they are not naming the man in order to protect the identity of the youth involved.

2 hurt in Sacramento shooting near Meadowview Road and Brookfield Drive
An investigation is underway after a Fourth of July shooting in Sacramento that left two people hurt. Sacramento police say officers responded near Meadowview Road and Brookfield Drive just after 1 p.m. to investigate calls of a shooting. At the scene, police say officers found two men who had been shot. Both men were taken to the hospital. One of the victims had non-life-threatening injuries while the other person was in stable condition, police say. Exactly what led up to the men being shot is unclear.
