My Brilliant Career: Netflix announces adaptation of Miles Franklin's classic novel

The Guardian18-06-2025
Netflix has announced an adaptation of the Australian classic My Brilliant Career, the much-loved novel by Miles Franklin.
The new show, which is now filming around South Australia, stars The Newsreader actor Philippa Northeast in the lead role as Sybylla, a headstrong young woman who finds herself torn between the safety of a traditional life and the liberation of being an unmarried writer.
Sybylla goes to stay at Caddagat, the homestead of her grandmother Mrs Bossier, who will be played in the Netflix adaptation by Anna Chancellor from the BBC's Pride and Prejudice and Four Weddings and a Funeral. At Caddagat, Sybylla befriends Harry, a young, wealthy neighbour who falls in love with her; Harry will be played in the new adaptation by Slow Horses actor Christopher Chung.
Andor actor Genevieve O'Reilly will play Sybylla's aunt Helen and Kate Mulvany plays Harry's aunt Gussie Beecham. What It Feels Like For a Girl actor Jake Dunn will play Frank Hawden, a jackaroo at Caddagat who makes constant advances on Sybylla.
The adaptation has been developed and co-written by Liz Doran, who worked on Josh Thomas' comedy Please Like Me and the surfing drama Barons.
'It's been a privilege to work with so many incredible creatives on this reimagining of Miles Franklin's rollicking tale of a young woman's quest to determine her own life,' Doran said on Wednesday.
Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, for whom both the Miles Franklin and Stella literary awards are named, was only a teenager when she wrote My Brilliant Career. It was a bestseller, but Franklin was subject to 'unwelcome notoriety' due to speculation over her novel's autobiographical elements; she pulled the book from publication, stipulating it could only be reprinted after her death. Franklin died in 1954 and the novel has never been out of print since it was printed again in 1966, becoming a feminist classic.
The book was also adapted into a 1979 film starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill and directed by Gillian Armstrong, and into a hit stage musical at the Melbourne Theatre Company in 2024.
Minyoung Kim, Netflix's vice-president of Asia Pacific content, called My Brilliant Career 'a timeless Australian story with themes as relevant today as when it was originally published'.
'We're excited to be partnering with some of Australia's best creatives and talent to bring this story to a whole new generation on Netflix and, with its stunning locations, there's no better home for this production than South Australia,' Kim said.

Married At First Sight 2026's sauciest bride risks major wardrobe malfunction as she marries Aussie reality star in beach ceremony

Married At First Sight has started filming across Sydney - and it seems we've found the sauciest bride of the 2026 season. Gia Fleur was exclusively pictured by Daily Mail Australia on Monday wearing a very racy wedding ensemble as she married Aussie reality star Scott McCristal in a romantic beach ceremony. The bride put on a busty display in a mermaid tail dress, which tightly hugged her figure as she wed the Million Dollar Island alum on Maroubra Beach. The frock boasted long sleeves, an accentuated waist and a high slit up the leg, which saw Gia risk a major wardrobe malfunction as she walked down the aisle. However, it was the frilly, bow-emblazoned garter wrapped around her left leg that raised eyebrows. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Gia finished off the look by sweeping up her golden locks into a bun and wore a jewel-encrusted tiara. Gia's groom was smitten as she came down the aisle. The couple were all smiles as they wed in front of a picturesque beach scene. Scott could be seen leaning back in fits of laughter after one point as they held hands at the altar. The new couple exchanged rings and then a kiss as they said 'I do' for MAFS fans across the globe. Later on, Scott and Gia enjoyed a loved-up photo shoot on the beach, where they could be seen striking a variety of poses. One picture saw the couple in a passionate embrace, with Gia's garter-laden leg lifted up by her husband. Later, Scott carried his new bride across the beach. While the newest season of MAFS has kicked off with a bang, according to reports, it nearly didn't happen. Daily Mail Australia previously revealed the 2026 season almost didn't make it to air after last-minute cast dropouts forced producers to scramble behind the scenes. 'They had multiple people pull out and had to move quickly to fill those spots,' one well-placed source revealed. But the end result? A bold, diverse cast of professionals, creatives, and big personalities - with producers tipping this to be one of the 'most explosive seasons yet.' 'Some couples are hitting it off immediately, others are absolute mismatches - the drama is already building,' one insider said.

EXCLUSIVE Hollywood heartthrob goes incognito as he reveals shock new look at Maroubra Beach in Sydney

A major US actor looked completely unrecognisable as he filmed scenes for his new movie in Sydney over the weekend. Noah Centineo looked very different as he donned long blonde hair while filming the new Street Fighter film at Maroubra Beach. The Gen Z heartthrob, 28, is set to play the role of Ken Masters alongside other major stars including rapper 50 Cent. He was dressed in a white singlet and denim pants as he got into character. Noah had bright yellow sunglasses on his locks as he chatted with the crew before filming scenes for the upcoming movie. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. It comes after Noah recently sparked romance rumours with Zoe Kravitz, 36, after they left a party together in West Hollywood back in March. The Big Little Lies star and actor, best known for his starring role in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, were seen exiting the same small bar/club around 2:20 a.m. According to eyewitnesses, the rumoured couple did leave in the same car. The pair's sighting came on the same day her ex-fiancé Channing Tatum, 44, went public with his new romance with Australian model Inka Williams at a pre-Oscars party in Los Angeles, hosted by Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Kravitz and Centineo refrained from engaging in any PDA and it is unknown if their relationship is romantic or platonic. The month prior the two were also seen hanging out in New York City. Kravitz and Tatum were romantically involved for three years and engaged for one, before they called off the wedding at the end of October. The split was a particular shock for the couple, as they had not only gotten engaged, but Channing had been spotted with fresh ink of Zoë's initials on the back of his hand in September. Noah shot to fame portraying Peter Kavinsky in the To All the Boys I've Loved Before film series, establishing himself as a teen heartthrob. He has also starred in the The Recruit, playing a CIA lawyer entangled in a dangerous world. Noah's most recent roles include Black Adam and Warfare. The actor has also appeared in Charlie Angles, The Fosters and Sierra Burgess Is A Loser.

Nine of the best family games for the summer holidays

I grew up fighting with my siblings and watching Neighbours and Home and Away. When we got bored, we'd be thrown outside to play in the street or told to shut up and play a game. Fast forward 100 years and I'm a kids' coach (and a lawyer), and my early days being forced to play games have turned me into a fully fledged addict. I love them — I use them to salvage a rainy Sunday afternoon with no plans; to keep things light in coaching sessions and to prise my own kids away from their screens. I really believe there is a game for any occasion: have a child struggling with maths? Rat-a-tat Cat will get them adding up small numbers in no time — don't punish them with Rummikub unless and until they become more confident. Perhaps it's a teenager who struggles with school but is amazing at art — crack open Pictionary. What about a kid just having a hard time, feeling things keenly and lost in their feelings? Try the very silly Gas Out, to lighten the mood. This most steady and reliable of games keeps everyone happy and it's very fun. I don't think I've been out for a family meal without it for about five years. The aim is to get as low a score as possible so it's very good for learning how to add up small numbers. Everyone gets a card with the same list of 12 topics — eg a girl's name, a fad, something your partner does that annoys you — and everyone also gets given the same letter, eg T. You then have three minutes to give a word for every subject ('Tamsin', 'Tamagotchi', 'Turns off sockets at the mains even when there's nothing plugged in'). If you don't have the same answer as anyone else, you get a point. It's sort of like an inverse and live version of Family Fortunes. The questions in this game are updated in line with current affairs, supplementing a stock of evergreen questions. You play on an app which can be off-putting if you want your game time to be screen free, but you do learn a lot while you're having fun. If you're tech savvy it means you can play with friends remotely too. • Read more parenting advice, interviews, real-life stories and opinions Two brilliant and absorbing building games with a very high boredom threshold. Yes, it's a bit annoying to crawl around looking for one of the random tower pieces but in this case, the juice is well worth the squeeze when you beat all previous tower height records and your opponent marvels at your dexterity and engineering prowess. The kids' version of the grown-up game Linkee, although truthfully the Dinkee version is plenty hard for the adults in my family. The game itself is like Only Connect — each card has four seemingly random questions on it. You write down the answer to each, and if you can guess what links the four answers you win the card. It's an absolute riot and I can see my kids' brains unfurl in real time when we play. This card game is based around a watering hole. You start with a hand of animal-themed cards, from elephant to mouse, and the bigger animals 'eat' the ones further down the chain. Each go, you lay cards and pick up cards, trying to 'eat' other animals to keep in your stockpile. It's really simple and quite therapeutic. This card game is basically snap but with actions and a hypnotic chant. The players all chant 'taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza' over and over again, matching the rhythm to the laying of cards. If the card laid matches the word being said, you 'snap', and the last one to snap has to pick up all the cards. To add a twist there are additional elements where players have to do an action. The last one to do the action has to take all the cards. • The best podcasts and audiobooks for a family road trip This game is suitable for all ages. It's basically about farts and not being the last person to hit the button that triggers one. There's a central character toy, Guster the Gas Cloud, with a button on top. Each player starts with three cards. Each go you play one and pick one. The cards have a 1, 2 or 3 written on them. You have to press the button the number of times that is written on your card. The fart builds up each time and if your push lets one go, you are also let go! Simple, dumb fun. Another winner that has kids crying with laughter. Players are asked a simple question and they have five seconds to come up with three answers before the buzzer rings. It's a good one to take out with elderly relatives as they can play too.
