Nebraska is the latest state to ban transgender students from girls' sports
Pillen signed the law flanked by dozens of lawmakers, women athletes and other advocates — including former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, who has made a name for herself as a vocal advocate of banning transgender athletes from women's sports.
The measure passed by the Nebraska Legislature last week broke a filibuster by a single vote cast along party lines. It was pared down from its initial form, which also sought to bar transgender students from using bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding with their gender identity.
Sponsors agreed to drop the bathroom and locker room ban when one Republican — Omaha Sen. Merv Riepe — declared he would vote against it otherwise.
The measure was first introduced in 2023 by then-freshman Sen. Kathleen Kauth, but failed to advance as lawmakers angrily argued over Kauth's other bill that sought to bar gender-affirming care for transgender minors under the age of 19. An amended version that banned gender-affirming surgery — but not all gender-affirming care — for minors later passed and was enacted that year.
On Wednesday, Kauth promised to revive her bathroom and locker room ban next year, reiterating her rejection that people can determine their own gender.
'Men are men and women are women,' she said, and urged voters in Riepe's district to pressure him to support it.
Republicans behind the sports ban say it protects women and girls and their ability to fairly compete in sports. Opponents say with so few transgender students seeking to participate in sports, the measure is a solution in search of a problem.
Fewer than 10 transgender students have applied to participate in middle school and high school sports in the state since 2018, the Nebraska School Activities Association said Wednesday.
At least 24 other states have adopted similar bans. President Donald Trump also signed an executive order this year intended to dictate which sports competitions transgender athletes can enter and has battled in court with Maine over that state's allowing transgender athletes in girls' and women's sports.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska denounced the measure.
ACLU Nebraska Executive Director Mindy Rush Chipman said the ban 'slams the door shut' for some transgender students to fully participate in their school communities.
'This ban will only create problems, not solve any,' Rush Chipman said, adding that 'the constant targeting of LGBTQ+ Nebraskans must stop.'

Texas governor threatens to remove Democrats who left state over Trump-backed redistricting
Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says he will begin trying to remove Democratic lawmakers from office Monday if they don't return after dozens of them left the state in a last-resort attempt to block redrawn U.S. House maps that President Donald Trump wants before the 2026 midterm elections. The revolt by the state House Democrats, many of whom went to Illinois or New York on Sunday, and Abbott giving them less than 24 hours to come home ratcheted up a widening fight over congressional maps that began in Texas but has drawn in Democratic governors who have floated the possibility of rushing to redraw their own state's maps in retaliation. Their options, however, are limited. At the center of the escalating impasse is Trump's pursuit of adding five more GOP-leaning congressional seats in Texas before next year that would bolster his party's chances of preserving its slim U.S. House majority. The new congressional maps drawn by Texas Republicans would create five new Republican-leaning seats. Republicans currently hold 25 of the state's 38 seats. A vote on the proposed maps had been set for Monday in the Texas House of Representatives, but it cannot proceed if the majority of Democratic members deny a quorum by not showing up. After one group of Democrats landed in Chicago on Sunday, they were welcomed by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, but declined to say how long they were prepared to stay out of Texas. 'We will do whatever it takes. What that looks like, we don't know,' said state Rep. Gene Wu, the Texas House Democratic Caucus leader. But legislative walkouts often only delay passage of a bill, including in 2021 when many of the same Texas House Democrats left the state for 38 days in protest of new voting restrictions. Once they returned, Republicans still wound up passing that measure. Four years later, Abbott is taking a far more aggressive stance and swiftly warning Democrats that he will seek to remove them from office if they are not back when the House reconvenes Monday afternoon. He cited a non-binding 2021 legal opinion issued by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, which suggested a court could determine that a legislator had forfeited their office. He also suggested the lawmakers may have committed felonies by raising money to help pay for fines they'd face. 'This truancy ends now,' Abbott said. In response, House Democrats issued a four-word statement: 'Come and take it.' The state of the vote Lawmakers can't pass bills in the 150-member Texas House without at least two-thirds of them present. Democrats hold 62 of the seats in the majority-Republican chamber and at least 51 left the state, said Josh Rush Nisenson, spokesperson for the House Democratic Caucus. Republican House Speaker Dustin Burrows said the chamber would still meet as planned on Monday afternoon. 'If a quorum is not present then, to borrow the recent talking points from some of my Democrat colleagues, all options will be on the table. . .,' he posted on X. Paxton, who is running for U.S. Senate, said on X that Democrats who 'try and run away like cowards should be found, arrested, and brought back to the Capitol immediately.' Fines for not showing up A refusal by Texas lawmakers to show up is a civil violation of legislative rules. The Texas Supreme Court held in 2021 that House leaders had the authority to 'physically compel the attendance' of missing members, but no Democrats were forcibly brought back to the state after warrants were served that year. Two years later, Republicans pushed through new rules that allow daily fines of $500 for lawmakers who don't show up for work as punishment. The quorum break will also delay votes on flood relief and new warning systems in the wake of last month's catastrophic floods in Texas that killed at least 136 people. Democrats had called for votes on the flooding response before taking up redistricting and have criticized Republicans for not doing so. Illinois hosts Texas lawmakers Pritzker, a potential 2028 presidential contender who has been one of Trump's most outspoken critics during his second term, had been in quiet talks with Texas Democrats for weeks about offering support if they chose to leave the state to break quorum. Last week, the governor hosted several Texas Democrats in Illinois to publicly oppose the redistricting effort, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom held a similar event in his own state. Pritzker also met privately with Texas Democratic Chair Kendall Scudder in June to begin planning for the possibility that lawmakers would depart for Illinois if they did decide to break quorum to block the map, according to a source with direct knowledge who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations. 'This is not just rigging the system in Texas, it's about rigging the system against the rights of all Americans for years to come,' Pritzker said Sunday night. Trump is looking to avoid a repeat of his first term, when Democrats flipped the House just two years into his presidency, and hopes the new Texas map will aid that effort. Caleb Williams Watch: How Bears QB performed on Day 7 of training camp
The Chicago Bears continued training camp on Wednesday morning with their seventh practice of the summer, and there was plenty to break down from Day 7 -- including the performance of quarterback Caleb Williams. Williams is entering his second season following a rocky rookie year that included two head coaches, three offensive coordinators, being sacked a league-high 68 times, a 10-game losing streak and a 5-12 record. But the Bears prioritized Williams' development this offseason with the hiring of offensive guru Ben Johnson as head coach, overhauling the interior offensive line and adding even more weapons to the mix. All eyes will be on Williams this summer as he continues to learn Johnson's offense and looks to find a rhythm heading into Year 2. We're taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the seventh practice of Bears training camp: The Good Williams has really stepped up following a rough start to training camp, and that continued into Wednesday's lighter, red-zone simulated practice. According to Bear Report's Zack Pearson, the starting offense got off to a strong start during the 11-on-11 period. Williams connected with wide receivers DJ Moore, Olamide Zaccheaus and rookie Luther Burden III on consecutive pass attempts. His best was to Burden, where Williams "threaded the needle" (per The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain) in the completion inside the five-yard line. While the final 11-on-11 red zone period wasn't pretty (more on that below), Williams still managed to put an exclamation on it with a touchdown on a read option. The Bad While Williams and the starting offense got off to a strong start, they did struggle during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, per Pearson. During the low red zone 7-on-7 work, Williams completed just 1 of 5 passes (his completion coming to running back Kyle Monangai out of the backfield for a touchdown.) One of his incompletions was to rookie tight end Colston Loveland, who slipped and fell down and was unable to haul it in. Pearson noted that during 11-on-11 that Williams went 0-for-2 and was sacked. But Williams did use his legs to find the end zone on a read option. The Noteworthy The Bears used their first two draft picks on offensive weapons for Williams, so it's a good thing that both are already showcasing they can be impact players in this offense -- and favorite targets for the second-year quarterback. The past two days have been about Williams' connection with rookie tight end Colston Loveland. But Wednesday's practice showed that Williams also has a budding connection with rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III, who practiced in team drills for just the second time. Burden was on the receiving end of two of the best plays of the day in this rather uneventful practice. On the first play, Williams hit Burden across the middle and the second-round rookie ran into the end zone prompting an ovation from the fans in attendance. On the second play, Burden made an impressive catch in the back of the end zone -- which Greg Braggs called "the play of the day" -- where it's up for debate whether he was in bounds or not. Still, it was a great catch. It's worth noting that this is the first time Williams has had the opportunity to throw to Loveland and Burden as both missed the veteran portion of the offseason program due to injury. The more reps the young rookies get with Williams, the more dangerous this offense becomes. She has really stepped up during Caitlin Clark's absence, averaging 11.7 points per contest over the past two weeks. Off the court, Cunningham is keeping herself busy with her new "Show Me Something" podcast. During her debut episode, she ripped the current state of officiating in the WNBA. "If I was a ref, I know I would mess up all the time," Cunningham said. "I'm not saying that your job is easy. But when it is a a simple call right in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing? What are you doing? They're just so inconsistent. Like, if you're on the other team and you're going to be fining the [expletive] out of me, cool. But let me do it to you. Yeah. You know what I mean?" For the most part, fans appreciated Cunningham's honesty on her podcast. What they didn't like was her pregame interaction with Fever guard Sydney Colson Cunningham and Lexie Hull basically sat on Colson as she was lacing up her sneakers on the hardwood. It seemed like a playful interaction, but some people found it to be weird and downright childish. "This is actually very weird," one fan replied after seeing this video. "Diabolical," a second fan commented. "That is so childish," another fan wrote. "I don't like this one bit and I'm not debating," a fourth fan said. The Fever are riding a five-game winning streak right now, so there shouldn't be any concerns about the culture in the locker room.
