World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards opens for entry
30 categories covering all sectors of sustainable travel and tourism have been selected by the Awards Advisory Board of experts to reflect the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and net positive framework of People, Planet, Place, Prosperity and Partnerships.
This year's programme sees the introduction of nine new categories to reflect the evolving landscape of sustainable tourism. These include peace impact, food and nutrition, indigenous community tourism, and guest experience.
Using a simple set of criteria, entries must be submitted by June 30. These will then be analysed and vetted by students of sustainable business from the Nova School of Business and Economics, Lisbon, with the final shortlist approved by the Awards Advisory Board.
Global voting – open to travel and tourism professionals – will run from July 14 to August 30.
The winners will be announced at the 2nd annual World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards Gala Ceremony, taking place at Terra, Expo City Dubai, on October 29, with the leaders in sustainable travel in attendance.

Trump gives Russia 50 days to resolve Ukraine war
US President Donald Trump on Monday told Russia to resolve its Ukraine war within 50 days or face massive new economic sanctions as he laid out plans for new infusions of weaponry for Kyiv. 'We're very, very unhappy' with Russia, Trump told reporters as he met with NATO chief Mark Rutte in the White House. 'We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 percent,' said Trump, adding that they would be 'secondary tariffs ' that target Russia's remaining trade partners -- thereby seeking to cripple Moscow's ability to survive already sweeping Western sanctions. Trump and Rutte also unveiled a deal under which the NATO military alliance would buy arms from the United States -- including Patriot anti-missile batteries -- and then distribute them to Ukraine to help it battle Russia's invasion. 'This is billions of dollars worth of military equipment is going to be purchased from the United States, going to NATO... and that's going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield,' Trump said. Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister, said Ukraine would get 'massive numbers' of weapons under the deal. Trump launched a bid at rapprochement with Putin shortly after starting his second term in January, as he sought to honor his election campaign promise to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours. His pivot towards Putin sparked fears in Kyiv that he was about to sell out Ukraine, especially after Trump and his team berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office in February. 'Assassin' But Trump has shown growing anger and frustration with Putin in recent weeks as the Russian leader, instead of halting his three-year invasion, instead stepped up attacks. Trump added of Putin on Monday: 'I don't want to say he's an assassin, but he's a tough guy.' Last week, Trump had teased an announcement on Monday on Russia. He then announced on Sunday that he would send vital Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine to help it fend off escalating barrages of Russian attacks. Washington has also U-turned from an announcement earlier this month that it would pause some arms deliveries to Kyiv. Rutte's visit to the White House is the first since the former Dutch prime minister described Trump as 'daddy' at a NATO summit in The Hague in June. Moscow has unleashed record waves of drone and missile strikes over the past few weeks, with the number of Ukrainian civilians killed or wounded in June hitting a three-year high, according to UN figures. Trump's announcement on Monday came as his special envoy Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv to meet Zelensky. Zelensky hailed the 'productive meeting', saying they had discussed 'strengthening Ukraine's air defense, joint production, and procurement of defense weapons in collaboration with Europe.' The Ukrainian leader also said he was 'grateful to President Trump for the important signals of support and the positive decisions for both our countries.' 'Better late than never' One Ukrainian soldier deployed in the war-scarred east of the country, who identified himself by his call sign Grizzly, welcomed Trump's promise of fresh air defense systems. 'Better late than never,' he told AFP. ' Because while we a re here defending the front line, our families are unprotected. Thanks to the Patriots they are giving us, our families will be safer,' the 29-year-old added. Russian forces meanwhile said on Monday they had captured new territory in eastern Ukraine with the seizure of two villages, one in the Donetsk region and another in the Zaporizhzhia region. Its forces also killed at least three civilians in the eastern Kharkiv and Sumy regions on Monday, regional Ukrainian officials announced.

BRICS: A New Global Regime
BRICS is shining these days in Brazil, with members coming from all parts of the world. BRICS is a new name that brings a new global regime, interestingly growing steadily and finding vast welcome in many parts of the world. In this name: B resembles Brazil R resembles Russia I resembles India C resembles China S resembles South Africa BRICS is a new economic forum formed by such countries to represent a new world for a global future. Now, BRICS has many new members joining the club. These countries collectively represent more than half of the world's population, and more are coming. Interestingly, even some European countries are knocking on the club's door for membership. As a matter of history, after World War II, certain forums were established including the UN, World Bank, IMF, etc. These international agencies were initially created to help reshape the world after the massive destruction caused by the World Wars I & II. However, over time it became clear that many countries are not happy with the performance of these 'big' international agencies. In response to the BRICS meeting in Brazil, President Trump said he would impose 10% tariffs on all products from BRICS. What is the meaning of this? Guess. BRICS advocates for immediate reformation, as the performance of such agencies clearly shows drastic failure in adopting a fair international agenda for the betterment of all countries and all people. The BRICS group loudly calls for reformation of the international arena and the enforcement of an international justice mechanism, particularly concerning the role of the mentioned agencies. They call for the involvement of all countries and the dismantling of the solo grip cemented around international agencies. This call covers all political, economic, and social affairs. To streamline this, in a new positive and clear action, BRICS formed a new financial and credit agency with very large capital. They are working towards a unified currency, unified banknote, and unified projects to help all countries and all people worldwide. This will shake up the current economic strategy and bring a new strategy with a fresh outlook. All are invited, and this invitation is finding overwhelming support from all parts of the world. Many big countries such as Japan, England, Indonesia, Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and others have expressed their desire to join hands with BRICS. The new look and new movement called for by BRICS has already started and will never stop. The train has started pedaling and is cruising slowly but steadily towards the 'new world' platform. Many countries with special locations, abundant natural resources (including water, land, livestock, gold, oil, and other precious metals), special human resource cadres, and other factors have the required eligibility to join BRICS. Moreover, the relations between such countries and BRICS seem strong and pave the way for their joining. BRICS stands for a new era of collaboration and unified harmony in all matters affecting our generation and generations to come. It is a genuine stand that will find support from all, irrespective of political, ethnic, economic, or social differences.

Russia-UN food and fertiliser agreement to end
The UN said yesterday its agreement with Moscow to facilitate exports of Russian foodstuffs and fertiliser to international markets in a bid to rein in global food prices would end this month. The United Nations trade and development agency, UNCTAD, said in a statement the 'final consultations meeting' on the deal had been held in Geneva, without giving more details. A source close to the discussions, who asked not to be named, told AFP the threeyear agreement 'will not be renewed' when it expires on July 22, due to disagreements. UNCTAD has taken the lead on UN efforts to limit increases in global food and fertiliser prices, which soared following Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, fuelling fears of food insecurity. The UN signed the agreement with Russia on July 22, 2022, with the aim of facilitating exports of Russian food and fertilisers, despite Western sanctions on Moscow. In fact, the economic sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion spared fertilisers and grain, but fear of accidentally ending up on the wrong side of the law had paralysed transporters and caused insurance premiums to skyrocket. After intense discussions, Russia and the UN established a framework to facilitate insurance and financial transactions that was compatible with US, British and European Union sanctions systems. But Russia -- the world's largest fertiliser producer -- had repeatedly complained the agreement was doing little to protect it from secondary sanction effects. A second agreement was also signed under the auspices of the UN on July 22, 2022, aimed at allowing the export of Ukrainian cereals blocked by Russia's war in the country.
