Kelantan HFMD cases surge to 11,813 as of June
Dr. Zaini Hussin, JKNK director, stated that weekly cases peaked at 960 during the 17th epidemiological week but have since dropped below 400 per week. 'Children under six remain the most affected, accounting for 9,912 cases or 83.9 per cent of total infections,' he said. Another 1,679 cases (14.2 per cent) involved children aged seven to 12, while only 222 cases (1.9 per cent) were reported in individuals over 12.
A total of 138 HFMD outbreaks were recorded statewide, with Pasir Mas and Kota Bharu each reporting 29 outbreaks (21 per cent). Kuala Krai followed with 27 outbreaks (19.5 per cent). Early childhood education centers, including nurseries and kindergartens, were primary transmission sites, contributing to 102 outbreaks (73.9 per cent). The remaining 36 outbreaks (26.1 per cent) occurred in private homes.
Laboratory findings identified Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16) as the dominant strain, spread via saliva, blister fluid, and fecal contact. 'Most cases are mild, with full recovery in seven to 10 days,' Dr. Zaini assured, noting no severe cases or fatalities.
Health authorities urged daycare and preschool operators to enforce entry screenings, disinfect surfaces, and report cases promptly. The public is advised to maintain hygiene, wash hands frequently, and keep symptomatic children home.

KOTA BHARU, July 20 — The Kelantan Health Department has today attempted to distance itself from an HIV health outreach programme in Pengkalan Chepa that was raided by then police, who then alleged that it was a 'gay sex party'. New Straits Times cited state health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin saying the programme was organised by a non-governmental organisation partner of the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC). 'The programme was organised by an NGO,' he was quoted saying. 'The Kota Jembal health officer was only invited to deliver a health talk during one of the event's sessions,' he said. He also alleged that the police raid took place after the programme had concluded. On Friday, MAC confirmed that it conducted a night outreach session here on June 17 under the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations model. MAC said the session was in collaboration with Kota Jembal Health Clinic and part of a strategic approach introduced by the Health Ministry. It said the session was held from 8pm to 2am and had reached over 70 high-risk individuals, with services scheduled outside office hours to improve accessibility. This comes as a coalition of civil society groups had also urged Kelantan police to revise their statement on a June 2025 raid of an alleged 'gay sex party' here, which they clarified was in fact a health outreach event. The groups, led by transgender rights advocacy group Justice for Sisters, said media reports following the raid resulted in harmful and stigmatising remarks that have intensified fear among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals seeking health services.

Kelantan college food poisoning linked to unregistered caterer
KOTA BARU: The food operator suspected of causing food poisoning among students at a private college here was found to be unregistered with the Health Ministry (MOH). State Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said food handlers are required to be registered with the ministry. "The operator had a business licence but was not registered with the MOH. "It is understood that they had only recently started the business. "Action has been taken under Section 18(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988," he said today. He said a seven-day closure notice had been issued to the premises, effective until July 16. Dr Zaini said the food poisoning outbreak involving students of the private college is now under control, with no new reported cases. "So far, we suspect the incident may have been caused by chicken curry, but we are still waiting for laboratory results," he said. It was reported that 427 people, comprising new students, orientation committee members and staff from a private college in Kota Baru, had experienced symptoms of food poisoning on Wednesday. The victims reportedly suffered from stomach pain, diarrhoea, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and fever.

Unlicensed caterer causes food poisoning affecting 427 students in Kota Bharu
PASIR MAS: The food poisoning incident involving 427 students from a private higher education institution in Kota Bharu has been linked to an unlicensed caterer operating without registration under the Ministry of Health (MOH). Kelantan Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Husin confirmed that the caterer was issued a seven-day closure notice starting July 9 under Section 18(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342). He stressed that all food businesses, including catering services, must register with MOH to ensure food safety. 'We found the caterer preparing meals for the college students was not registered with MOH and was operating from a private residence. A seven-day closure order has been issued,' he said. The outbreak is now under control, with no new cases reported. All hospitalised students have been discharged. Initial investigations point to chicken curry as the possible cause, but lab tests are pending for confirmation. The number of suspected food poisoning cases rose from 343 to 427 within a day. In a separate update, Dr Zaini revealed that RM249,000 in compounds were issued from January to June this year under the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 (Act 154) for dengue prevention. Additionally, 35 cases under the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 resulted in RM23,000 in fines, while 10 cases under the Food Act 1983 saw penalties exceeding RM30,000. Under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), 7,643 premises were inspected, leading to 5,953 offence notices and 7,744 educational advocacy sessions. 'Under the Food Act 1983 (Act 281), we inspected 4,999 food premises, and 39 were issued temporary closure orders under Section 11 to ensure hygiene and food safety,' he added. - Bernama
