Model and influencer San Rachel dies by suicide in Puducherry; tahsildar-level inquiry ordered
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the fashion and influencer community, where she was known for her bold stance against colourism and her outspoken advocacy for inclusivity in the beauty industry.
Born as Sankarapriya, San Rachel had married fashion designer Satya in June 2024.
According to police sources, she was reportedly under severe financial and personal stress over the past few months. Investigators revealed that she had consumed around 50 BP tablets during a visit to her father's house in Karamanikuppam on June 5. Though initially rushed to government general hospital, she left after two days without completing treatment. Her condition deteriorated over the following days, prompting her husband to admit her at a private hospital in Moolakulam. After several days of treatment , she was finally taken to JIPMER, where she succumbed on Saturday night.
Police recovered four suicide notes addressed to her father, husband, and mother-in-law.
In these, San Rachel reportedly absolved her family members of any blame. She apologized for withholding the truth about financial matters, particularly a Rs 6 lakh loan she had taken through the wife of her husband's friend to cover wedding expenses—without informing her husband, who believed the costs were borne by her father.
In her letter to her father, D. Gandhi, San Rachel had urged him to sell his land and repay the loan to a person referred to as 'Venkat Anna.' She had been requesting financial help from him over the past year, but he had expressed his inability due to other family responsibilities.

A few other sequences feel stretched, and pacing suffers in parts. The climax gets overly sentimental in parts. Some scenes, like the team managing airfare and accommodation for the final match, come across as convenient and trite.'

'Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi' by British artist Clare Leighton sold for triple its estimate of £50,000-£70,000 (Rs 57 lakh to Rs 80 lakh). It was the top lot in the Travel and Exploration online sale and the first time this portrait has been sold at auction. According to the artist's family, the portrait was on public display in 1974 when it was allegedly attacked with a knife by a Hindu right-wing activist. The catalogue entry refers to signs of restoration to tears in several places. Leighton met Gandhi when he visited London in 1931 to attend the Second Round Table Conference. At the time, Leighton was in a relationship with political journalist Henry Noel Brailsford, who was a passionate supporter of Indian Independence. It was through this connection that she was introduced to Gandhi and was one of the few artists admitted to Gandhi's office to sit with him to sketch and paint him. In November 1931, Leighton showcased her portraits in an exhibition at the Albany Galleries in London. Journalist Winifred Holtby attended the opening and wrote: 'The little man squats bare-headed, in his blanket, one finger raised, as it often is to emphasise a point, his lips parted for a word that is almost a smile… the statesman who knows just how to play on the psychology of friends and enemies alike.'

Cops recover 39L out of 40L robbed sum
Kozhikode: In a significant breakthrough in the case of robbing Rs 40 lakh from a bank employee at Pantheerankavu near Kozhikode, police have recovered Rs 39 lakh of the swindled amount. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The money, part of the amount robbed by accused Shibin Lal, was found packed in plastic and buried in a plot about half-a-kilometre from his house at Pallipuram near Pantheerankavu. The robbery took place on June 11 and Shibin Lal was arrested three days later. At the time of the arrest, only Rs 55,000 was recovered and Shibin Lal claimed to have handed over ₹45,000 to a third accused, Dinaranju alias Kuttappi. The second accused, Shibin Lal's wife Krishnalekha, and Kuttappi were arrested on June 23. Shibin Lal and Krishnalekha misled officials at ESAF Bank by claiming that they had gold worth Rs 40 lakh pledged at a private firm. They produced fake receipts and convinced the bank to give them Rs 40 lakh in cash to take over the pledged gold and mortgage at ESAF bank. The bank staff came to Pantheerankavu with the required cash to reclaim the pledged gold from the firm where he had pledged it. As the bank staff stepped out of the car, Shibin Lal snatched the cash from them and fled on a scooter parked nearby. Though Shibin Lal was interrogated twice after the incident, he consistently withheld the location of the remaining Rs 39 lakh. It was only during a third custodial interrogation that he confessed and revealed the location where he had buried the money. Police said shortly after the robbery that Shibin Lal switched off all three of his mobile phones. He set aside Rs 1 lakh for his expenses and secretly buried the remaining Rs 39 lakh in a private property, before escaping to Palakkad. Another lead came from CCTV footage in Kondotti area which showed Shibin Lal travelling without the bag. After that Shibin Lal was questioned again during which he revealed the actual location.
