Cal Clutterbuck says he's retiring after 17 NHL seasons with the Islanders and Wild
Clutterbuck's 4,029 hits are the most since the league started tracking them in 2005. He posted a video to Instagram on Wednesday along with a message thanking longtime linemates Matt Martin and Casey Cizikas and fans who made Long Island his home.
'I'm beyond grateful for every teammate, coach, fan, and moment along the way,' Clutterbuck wrote. 'Hockey gave me everything — a purpose, a brotherhood, and a lifetime of memories. To Matt and Casey — it was an honor to go to war with you night in and night out. What we built together means more than words can say.'
Clutterbuck did not play in the league this season after his contract was not renewed last summer, something he referenced in making the announcement. His announcement came a day after the Islanders said longtime general manager Lou Lamoriello was not returning.
'Obviously I haven't played hockey in the NHL in a year, and I think it's safe to say that everyone assumed, but I'm going to make it official today: I am retiring from the NHL,' Clutterbuck said in the roughly minute-long video.
Clutterbuck recorded his retirement announcement earlier this month after attending the Masters with his father and some friends.
'I couldn't help but think about how I would have never been able to do that if I were still playing hockey,' Clutterbuck said.
Now 37, Clutterbuck played his first six seasons from 2007-13 with the Minnesota Wild after they drafted him in the third round in '06. They traded him to New York the summer of 2013 with a third-rounder for Nino Niederreiter.
Clutterbuck became a popular teammate and fan favorite, playing his final 794 regular-season and playoff games with the Islanders to reach 1,145 in his career. He helped them make seven postseason appearances, including two trips to the Eastern Conference final.
He posted that he recorded multiple times trying to deliver the news, ending the video saying: 'I really have no idea how to do this. That's it. I'm done. See ya.'

Blues Soaring Forward Should Hit New Level
St. Louis Blues forward Jake Neighbours broke out in a big way for the Central Division club during the 2023-24 season. In 77 games with the Blues that season, he scored a career-high 27 goals and recorded 38 points. This was undoubtedly a nice breakout year for the 2020 first-round pick, as he proved that he could make an impact at the NHL level. Neighbours followed up his strong 2023-24 season was another good one in 2024-25. In 82 games last season for the Blues, he scored 22 goals and set new career highs with 24 assists, 46 points, and 173 hits. He also provided solid offense for the Blues during the post-season, recording six points in their seven-game first-round series against the Winnipeg Jets. Overall, Neighbours is continuing to head in the right direction with his development and is starting to emerge as a key part of the Blues' roster in the process. However, when noting that he is still only 23 years old and still in the earlier stages of his career, there is clear reason to believe that he can still hit another new level next season. When looking at what Neighbours has done early on in his career, it is fair to argue that he has the potential to emerge as a legitimate top-six forward at the NHL level. If he gets his offense up a bit more and continues to make an impact with his physicality, he could be a big piece of the Blues' core moving forward. It will be fascinating to see what kind of year the Calgary, Alberta native puts together for the Blues next season from here. Blackhawks Young Goalie Continues To Get Praise
The Chicago Blackhawks are hoping that goaltender Spencer Knight will become something special for them. The 2019 first-round pick undoubtedly has plenty of potential and has shown promise early on, but there is a real expectation that he has not hit his ceiling yet. During this past season split between the Florida Panthers and Blackhawks, Knight put together a 17-16-3 record, a .901 save percentage, and a 2.72 goals-against average in 38 games. Overall, it was a solid year for the youngster, and it will be fascinating to see what kind of season he has as the Blackhawks' starter in 2025-26 from here. In 95 career NHL games over four seasons, Knight has a 49-33-9 record, a .904 save percentage, and a 2.83 goals-against average. Due to his solid play over the year, he has now received more praise. Blackhawks' Spencer Knight is One of the Most Impressive Goalies Under 25 The NHL is full of young talent and the league has been getting younger in recent years. The Chicago Blackhawks have some of that young talent on their team and have impressive players at every position. NHL Fantasy/Edge has named their top 10 goalies who are 26 years old or younger for the 2025-26 season, and Knight was ranked at the No. 8 spot. Knight beat out Joel Hofer of the St. Louis Blues and Leevi Merilainen of the Ottawa Senators on the list. Given how Knight has performed early on in his career, him making this list is entirely fair. The potential for him to have a strong season in 2025-26 is there, and this is especially so if he taps into his potential more. Thus, he could be a good goalie for fantasy hockey managers to bring in once the big-name netminders are off the board. Former Blackhawks Forward Had Monster Year During the 2022 NHL off-season, the Chicago Blackhawks elected not to send forward Dylan Strome a qualifying offer. As a result, he became an unrestricted free agent (UFA) and signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Washington Capitals in July of that year.
