GWS star recruit embraces 'interesting' super-sub role

Yahoo20 hours ago

GWS star recruit Jake Stringer has breathed new life into his first season with the Giants thanks to an unlikely role, as a super substitute.
The 31-year-old had struggled to find form at his third AFL club after spending the pre-season recovering from illness, only to injure his hamstring twice in three months.
But in a memorable pre-bye return against Gold Coast, after six weeks on the sidelines, Stringer kicked the match-winning goal to set up GWS's seven-point victory.
Stringer entered the fray far earlier than expected at Engie Stadium, having been subbed on in the second quarter after teammate Lachie Whitfield sustained a concussion.
But the star forward, who has tallied 377 goals from 220 AFL games, never lost confidence in his body's ability to hold up.

"The plan was obviously to be the sub, pretty much from the start," he told AAP.
"But I'd done a power of work over the last five weeks, so I knew if I was going to be called on early I was ready to go.
"I definitely felt good out there, and felt like I had my speed and power. I was lucky enough to hit the scoreboard late, and get a good win."
The 2016 premiership player slotted two crucial goals in the final quarter as GWS snatched the win, having trailed by 29 points earlier in the game.
"It was my first goal here (at Engine Stadium) in the Giants' colours. I knew there was someone coming so I knew I had to kick it hard," he said.
"As soon as it come off the boot, I knew it wasn't missing.
"It was good to get one late finally and back it up a couple minutes later."
Stringer notably booted three goals, his best effort as a Giant, while serving as the sub in a round-eight SCG derby loss.
"It's an interesting role, but I seem to find a good balance in being able to do it," Stringer said.
"But it's like anything, I just try and make my moments matter when I have the ball, or when the ball's in my vicinity."
It has been a stop-start season for the Giants but victories over the Suns and Brisbane Lions provided a major morale and momentum boost ahead of their round-16 bye.
"It's massive to be able to get a win going into the bye," Stringer said.
"We really wanted to finish the last two games off really well and we've done that ... we'll get ready for a charger back-half of the season."

Ben White delighted by ‘incredible honour' of Lions call-up

Ben White revealed he was shaking with excitement after getting the call to leave Scotland's summer tour squad and join up with the British and Irish Lions. The Toulon scrum-half was preparing to go out and train with the Scots at their base in Whangarei, New Zealand on Monday morning before receiving a phone-call from Lions head coach Andy Farrell inviting him to Australia for Lions duty following the injury-enforced withdrawal of Welshman Tomos Williams. Advertisement In an interview with Scottish Rugby just before he left to fly to Queensland, 27-year-old White said: 'It's pretty crazy, he called me this morning and I haven't stopped shaking since. 'It's an incredible honour, I'm really excited. I called my mum and dad straight away, I don't think they could quite believe it. They were obviously just incredibly proud. 'It was just a great phone call to have. I've not thought about it too much as yet. It's something you dream of, but you never really think you'll do. I'm just incredibly proud.' White – capped 25 times by Scotland since his debut in 2022 – admitted he was disappointed not to be included in the initial Lions squad. Advertisement 'Obviously watching the squad being announced was tough, but it was an experience that I can put in the locker room,' he said. 'I knew I just had to do what I could and try and play well for my club, Toulon and obviously come here (to New Zealand). Ben White has won 25 Scotland caps (Adam Davy/PA) 'I was really excited to be on tour with Scotland. I was focused on that and if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. I guess someone's looking out for me upstairs and I've fallen on my feet.' Scotland forwards coach Fergus Pringle is hopeful that White will not be the last player to be summoned from Gregor Townsend's squad by the Lions. 'I think Ben's not the only player that was probably close to getting picked initially and just missed out,' he said. 'He was really consistent over the Six Nations and over the season so everyone knew he deserved an opportunity but it happened pretty quickly to be honest. Advertisement 'Andy Farrell phoned and the next thing this morning, Gregor (Townsend) was telling the team and the boys are buzzing and cheering and then Ben's off and we're off to the pitch to go and get training. It was just great to see the reaction of the boys and also his reaction was good. Gus Warr has been added to the Scotland squad (Mike Egerton/PA) 'Lions tours are like any tours, there's always going to be injuries, as we've seen already. So like with Ben's situation, when Tomos Williams hobbles off with his hamstring and it doesn't look good, you're thinking, 'OK, maybe there's a chance here'. So it could easily happen again.' Scotland have called up Sale scrum-half Gus Warr to fill White's place in the squad for their three matches against Maori All Blacks, Fiji and Samoa. Advertisement 'It's a great opportunity for him,' said Pringle. 'He performed really well on the summer tour last year and from his perspective, a bit like Ben, it was tough on him not to get picked initially because he's been on real good form for Sale. It's a chance that he deserves and I'm sure he'll take it.'

Tigers' Lynch sent to tribunal, faces several weeks out

The AFL tribunal is certain to come down hard on Richmond veteran Tom Lynch for striking Adelaide opponent Jordan Butts. Lynch has been referred directly to the tribunal for the second-quarter incident on Sunday at the MCG and faces a suspension of several weeks. The hearing most likely will be held on Tuesday night. He was also fined for a separate striking charge in the same term, again involving Butts, and for a first-quarter wrestling incident. The blow that earned Lynch a direct referral was graded as intentional conduct, severe impact and high contact. The 32-year-old Lynch had a shocker in the first half of Richmond's 68-point loss to the Crows, giving away five free kicks as he lost his temper. Butts was also fined for wrestling in the first term.
