'London boroughs have a responsibility to open more spaces for e-bikes'

Six years ago, Agustin Guilisasti was living in west London and studying for a master's in data science across the city at South Bank University.
The Chilean had only envisaged staying in London for a year, but instead sensed a 'big opportunity' with bike travel after becoming frustrated with expensive cycle hire options at the time.
Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs – Guilisasti's grandfather set up Concha y Toro, the largest wine-growing company in Latin America – he had been part of the founding team at Cabify, the unicorn ride-hailing firm which was the first in its sector to offset carbon emissions.
With a sustainability angle in mind, Guilisasti, along with two co-founders, PR expert Caroline Seton and marketing guru Michael Stewart, launched micromobility start-up Human Forest.

They launched their e-bike service with a difference to competitors Lime and Santander Cycles by offering the first 10 minutes free every day for users. 'It was cheaper than Lime and the Tube and was affordable for everyone. There was no excuse not to use e-bikes,' says Guilisasti.
In 2020, the company tested 200 bikes in Islington, north London, and growth has sped along to five years later with 15,000 currently on London's streets.
Billed as the capital's most affordable e-bike provider and now called Forest, the company provides over one million customers across 14 boroughs.
According to data, Londoners are now taking 1.33 million cycling trips every day, up by over a quarter since pre-COVID levels, while shared e-bike trips at industry leader Lime and Forest account for one in six rides into the capital.
Yet, says Guilisasti, the issue of e-bike parking has remained stagnant.
Dame Joan Collins recently took to social media to lambast 'loutish' Lime e-bike riders blocking pavements, while councils are slowly introducing compulsory bay-only parking models following agreements with hire companies.
Guilisasti says it has incentives for riders to park in specific spots with the lure of extra minutes and uses AI to predict where the best locations are for both consumers and London itself. 'We know where they [bikes] are and where there are too many of them,' he adds.

'We need to work with the authorities, share the data and be responsible in how we manage the whole operation. Lime hasn't done that well and we are paying as an industry a little bit because of that. There is a responsibility for the boroughs also to open more space.'
The Chilean native says he is 'excited' over the recent news from the London mayor that part of Oxford Street will see a car ban and also highlights how Forest e-bikes are available through the cycle-to-work scheme. Employees can take up an offer of less than £1 per day.
Forest employs 71 staff and around 300 agency seasonal staff through the year. Meanwhile, the company's mission is also laid bare on its website, where an asterisk takes centre stage in 'c*r' to facilitate a shift away from vehicles in London.
'We are trying to simulate each time you ride on a Forest, you save 'x' amount of CO2," adds Guilisasti. "We are trying step by step to ensure it is better for the city, users and the planet.'
Forest, which says it recycles almost 70% of broken bike parts, has raised a total of £25m in investment to date, while revenues have jumped from £7.4m in 2023 to nearly £30m last year. Guilisasti forecasts revenues to double this year.
Revenue lines include brand tie-ups for advertising on Forest's app, the latest partnership being Deliveroo, with the food delivery giant's logo featuring on e-bikes and video adverts active on the app. 'We have done things differently to our competitors and that has helped give us profitability,' says Guilisasti.

The company has also implemented an airline-style reciprocal approach with global mobility partners, whose users can use Forest bikes in London akin to Lime's partnership with Uber.
'We are made in London but for the rest of the world we are doing alliances which makes more sense for now,' says Guilisasti, after Forest had tendered to bring its model to Paris earlier this year.
'Our plan is to expand operations to the west of London. We need to put all our effort into growing in London and become one of the biggest players.
'From day one we have had sustainable mobility for everyone and we have kept to that mission.'
How to build a brand for longevity
My advice is to find something that generates value to the users. The reason why people love Forest is that it's affordable, sustainable and we are doing something a little bit different to the rest.
Pedal, pedal, pedal. You need to be clear of your mission and to continue believing in it and if you have a value behind it. Don't try to reinvent the wheel – be simple.
Try to do things that are win-win. If you have a product or service where everyone wins you won't need to spend money investing in the users. We have spent almost zero in acquisition and behind that we have something in our brand that is good for consumers.
Relationships in life are everything. When you are in the office you do more things and you can work faster.

Avenga: Europe Needs Own Car Software Or It Will Become Chinese Colony

Avenga has recently inherited a partnership with the McLaren Formula 1 team Most automakers are starting to get to grips with electrification. But the parallel revolution of software is still proving problematic. In March, Volkswagen's Cariad software division announced 1,600 layoffs, a third of its staff, as this area continued to be a thorn in the side of the group since it caused significant delays in the launch of the ID.3 in 2020. Avenga wants to change that and give European car producers the software leadership to match the engineering prowess they have enjoyed for decades. I talked to Avenga CEO, Ludovic Gaudé, about how his company plans to turn keep Europe's cars competitive. The New Avenga 'Avenga is an aggregate of 12 companies with the view of building one of the largest software development organisations in Europe,' says Gaudé. 'The idea of the investment behind Avenga is that obviously everything is going digital nowadays, but most of the companies that are extracting value from this are outside of Europe. We wanted to create a European-led company focusing on this and supporting not only European clients, but also outside Europe with the European mindset.' The Avenga name comes from one of the 12 companies that came together. Previously the group had been called Qinshift, but this seemed like a difficult brand to use internationally, whereas Avenga is simpler to pronounce. The main idea of Qinshift remains, however, and that is about shifting the way companies approach software together. For automotive, that means the rise of the Software Defined Vehicle (SDV), but that isn't the only area Avenga is working on. European automakers have had trouble delivering the software integration championed by companies ... More like Tesla 'We are not only an automotive company,' says Gaudé. 'It's about 25% of our business. The rest is more around Telco, media, banking, and retail. We are building software from the more front end-related mobile web all the way down to where the algorithm and the intelligence are being built on the back end. We also develop embedded software closer to the to the silicon and this is where it comes into play with automotive because you must tackle the different dimensions of the SDV. A lot of this comes from thinking about what people are going to do in their cars now because they are autonomous and highly connected. There's a lot of lot more that people can do in their in their cars so you need to have a platform that allows that.' Gaudé draws a parallel with what happened in the smartphone business around 20 years ago, which didn't go well for incumbent brands. 'Telco operators had access to all the data, all the geolocation, and they knew exactly the behavior of all of us in Europe or elsewhere,' he argues. 'But they couldn't do anything with it. They were completely bypassed by the likes of Google. This is what the automaking OEMs are afraid of. When Tesla came into the market, all the CEOs of the European car manufacturers had the same approach as Nokia had in 2006 when iPhone was launched.' They thought Tesla would find it's not as easy as it thought to build cars. 'But Tesla looked at the problem in a completely different way. There is this joke about software on wheels. This is what Tesla has been promoting, but the car manufacturers saw what happened with the telcos. They're trying not to become a dumb pipe or piece of hardware. However, it has proven to be very difficult for them to put this in motion.' Avenga: Solving Europe's SDV Conundrum? The troubles at Cariad exemplify this. 'They are experiencing problems because two thirds of their people are used to working in a certain way,' say Gaudé. 'Their development cycle is very linear, not agile at all. They are trying to mimic what others are doing, but what they should be doing is getting rid of the entire team and starting from zero. They are not doing that and now what they are pursuing is more a path of reducing costs, so it's been extremely difficult.' The Volkswagen ID.3 was plagued with software problems that delayed its launch. There are some positive signs, however. 'European car manufacturers all have EVs,' says Gaudé. 'They all have software in their in their vehicle. You see the screens are becoming bigger. The use cases are becoming wider. You see the use of more modern technologies to provide more safety for drivers. You have tools that are observing the angle of your eyes, or to see if your eye is closed or not and then shaking the wheel if something goes wrong.' They are also providing over-the-air software updates like smartphones and computers. 'They are making a step forward.' However, Tesla isn't the only threat anymore. Chinese automakers have also been quicker to adopt the SDV approach, and are even starting to challenge the latest Tesla Model Y. 'You have a similar vehicle to a Porsche coming from China that is costing a quarter of what it cost in Germany,' says Gaudé. 'It's been super hard for the European OEMs, for fear of cannibalization, to jump with two feet into this space.' Chinese challengers like Xiaomi are delivering Porsche-like performance for a much lower price This is where Avenga plans to help European OEMs compete. 'We are not a hardware company,' says Gaudé. 'We are pure software. We help with designing new user experiences within the car. For example, there is no reason why inside a car all the seats need to be directed to the front. You could have a table inside and once they become autonomous you could play Poker. This is how things could change. We are also working on safety and driving mechanisms to help car manufacturers develop solutions that are not completely autonomous but that will assist people in driving.' Avenga is also helping to develop software that optimizes the manufacturing phase. 'You can take preventive actions to maintain the production facility before it's too late,' says Gaudé. 'AI models can help with that. We are also working with them on business models because most of the time your car is sitting in the garage doing nothing.' This includes car sharing and related capabilities like automatic parking. 'The entire concept around mobility extends beyond the SDV.' Gaudé sees another fundamental shift in the automotive industry on the horizon, partly enabled by autonomous driving and AI. 'It's hard to know if it's going to happen next month or in a year from now,' he says. 'Some say AI will be replacing the human. The AI is going to be the main driver, and the human will be assisting the AI. It will take the task on its own and ask a human to help when needed.' One of Avenga's biggest European clients so far is Skoda, where cameras at the production line detect manufacturing defects and provide preventative maintenance to fix them before the vehicle is released for sale. Avenga is also helping Skoda with using mobile phones as a key and connectivity for over-the-air software updates. Avenga Partnership With McLaren F1 However, the first place you're likely to see the Avenga brand is likely to be on a McLaren Formula 1 car. 'We have taken advantage of passthrough sponsoring from one of our sister companies called Allwyn,' says Gaudé. However, it's early days for this partnership. 'The relationship just started a couple of months ago. We are exploring with them how we can work on two aspects of their development. One is how they can increase their performance. Lando is winning pole position with around 1/4 of a second, so after 60 laps any tiny detail can add up. You need to be super precise and innovative. We are working with them on how we can expose their data in a way that in real time can have a positive impact on their performance. The other area that is interesting in motorsport is how to engage with the fanbase. We have some experience in creating experiences so that fans continuously feel connected emotionally.' Avenga hopes to leverage AI to help improve McLaren's F1 strategy Avenga also hopes to leverage the latest capabilities of Generative AI for optimizing strategy in Formula 1. 'The FIA issues a thick book every year about what to do and not do, and what are the penalties,' says Gaudé. 'You can use those data points to help the principal while he's making course strategies. We are working on this with Large Language Models and the history of FIA interpretation of certain decisions that the drivers or the principals have made. We are working on how to maximize outcomes based on those past experiences. It's not so easy for a human to do that, especially when you are in a in the middle of the action.' The question remains how European car software can compete with what American and Chinese companies are now offering, and how much Avenga can contribute. 'In order for us not to become a colony of the US or China, when it comes to software, we will have to develop our own,' says Gaudé. 'We must step into this this new era. We are living in extraordinary times. As someone who lived through the PC revolution some 30-40 years ago, to mobile, to the Internet, I can see the change is not going to be like the industrial revolution. It's not going to take years. It's going to be fast. It's exciting. And we don't have a choice, because if we don't jump into this, we're going to be left behind.'

Is Newcastle United Being Smart Enough in The Summer Transfer Window?

(Photo by) As June progressed, it became increasingly clear Newcastle United's transfer business wouldn't step up until early July. Perhaps that contradicts what coach Eddie Howe asked for at the end of last season - 'dynamic start to the window' - but there is growing hope of a breakthrough between over the next week before the players reconvene for pre-season on July 7 with a reported £150m ($205m) to spend. Bids have been made, but crucially not accepted, for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and Brighton forward Joao Pedro. Interest in all three has been long-standing, with movement on Trafford expected soon. But Forest is refusing to reduce its £60m ($82m) asking price for Elanga, while Chelsea has entered the race for Joao Pedro and he is said to favour a move to London. Howe was intent on early movement on targets to avoid missing out on them, but the Brazilian would join Dean Huijsen, Liam Delap and Bryan Mbeumo in choosing against a move to Tyneside already. Frustration is growing among the fanbase, and the entire approach is beginning to be questioned. There is context behind growing fan discontent. Newcastle hasn't strengthened its first team squad significantly in two years, and last summer was a particularly difficult one. There were public chases for Premier League targets Michael Olise and Marc Guehi which failed, after forced sales of exciting young players Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and disagreements between Howe and members of the board. Even though Newcastle won a trophy and secured Champions League qualification last season and has made moves to secure players since the window opened, unconditional trust in the decision makers has eroded dangerously. Supporters are still awaiting an update on two key appointment in the boardroom. Paul Mitchell, the sporting director, is leaving on Monday and CEO Darren Eales will follow in September due to his health. Co-owner Jamie Reuben is said to be stepping up in negotiations, while Andy Howe and Steve Nickson are taking a hands on role in recruitment. But the lack of clarity is a concern, and without a breakthrough, some believe Newcastle is simply repeating its errors in the market again. Perhaps that is a harsh assessment. But all of those targets have one thing in common, which other successful signings since the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund's takeover of the club in October 2021 do not. Not only are they all domestic based, but they are also extremely in demand with lots of other top clubs making bids too. Mbeumo was always going to have his pick of clubs, as were Olise and Huijsen, and all of those have more financial power than Newcastle; namely Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Although the project is an exciting one, there is only so much they can offer in terms of wages in the current climate. Newcastle does struggle with PSR more than most, and some are asking valid questions. about the fairness of the rules. Arguably nobody else is shopping for players above the allowance of its revenue streams; Aston Villa has, but sells key assets to offset the effects. Revenue has grown from £140m ($192m) in 2021 to £320m in 2024 and that trajectory will only continue, but signing 'in demand' players will always be difficult. The club isn't getting the most out of its opportunity within the restrictions either. With such scrutiny on every financial decision these days, no big signing can be a failure. It stands to reason why Howe in particular is driving the idea of certainty with recruits, players who will not need time to settle. Newcastle has rightly earned great credit for its success rate, but the common theme is all of those players have arrived with risk, liked by bigger clubs but crucially not enough to be poached by one of them. Anthony Gordon, for example, was wanted by Chelsea, but Newcastle signed him when excitement around him had died off a bit. A year before Alexander Isak joined, he was fresh off a season scoring 17 goals for Real Sociedad and impressing at the COVID-impacted Euro 2020; Arsenal were heavily linked. By the time he signed, doubts emerged after he netted just six times in the prior campaign, and Newcastle was seen as taking a risk. Interest in Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman was rife too, but Newcastle again acted swiftly with a strong desire to secure them after others didn't move. It also explains why those deals can be done away from the headlines, because there isn't as much talk around them. (Photo by) There have been links with players who fit that description this summer, and Newcastle is expected to look at other targets if no progress can be made after recent bids. Giorgio Scalvini is an extremely highly-rated defender playing for Atalanta in Italy; he is expected to develop into an elite centre back, but a serious knee injury has cooled speculation and reduced his value to a reported £40m ($55m). Now would be the time to act. Similarly, Dutch playmaker Xavi Simons has been on the radar of a number of clubs, having come through the Barcelona academy before moving to Paris Saint-Germain. Last year, when he joined RB Leipzig, the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester United were interested, after his impressive Euro 2024 campaign which included a goal against England in the semi-final. But it has been clear he wants to leave the German club after failure to qualify for Europe for some weeks and nobody has swooped, perhaps because he isn't 'Premier League proven'. His reported valuation is £60m ($82m), the same as Brighton want for Joao Pedro and Forest want for Elanga, but he has played in thw Champions League. That is the kind of chance they took before; his situation is extremely similiat to Isak's. Why not move now? Newcastle has promised a lot this summer, there is a need to strengthen considerably and the ability to make that a reality. But it needs to be clever in the market; trying to sign players bigger rivals are after hasn't worked before. If Chelsea successfully move for Joao Pedro, a change of approach is required.
