Browns owner Jimmy Haslam dismisses speculation surrounding Arch Manning
Haslam addressed speculation that Cleveland already has its sights set on Manning due to the team's ongoing quarterback woes,
"I think if you know the Manning family, I would bet — and I don't know Arch at all — I bet he stays in college two years," Haslam told reporters during a press conference Tuesday. "I don't even think that's worth discussing."
Manning will take over as Texas' starting quarterback this season, but the expectation that he will declare for the draft next year and Haslam's connections to the Manning family have led many to suggest Manning could be chosen with one of the two first-round picks the Browns have next year.
Manning passed for 939 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for four touchdowns last season behind Quinn Ewers. During SEC Media Days earlier this month, Manning admitted that playing backup wasn't easy, but he never contemplated transferring.
"(Transferring) never really crossed my mind," he said. "I knew Texas was the place I wanted to be. It was the city I wanted to be in, a great education. I had friends there. I was still developing and growing as a football player and a person. So, I never really wanted to leave. If there was somewhere else I wanted to be, I would have gone."
Texas opens its season Aug. 30 against the defending national champion Ohio State.

Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. will miss the coming season after an MRI confirmed that he ruptured an Achilles tendon. Coach Kevin Stefanski said before Wednesday's practice that Emerson will have surgery, but a date has not been determined. 'It's disappointing. Injuries are the worst part of our game, but he will bounce back, I know what he is made of,' Stefanski said. 'Yesterday was a lot. He is sore today.' Emerson, a third-round draft pick in 2022, got hurt while covering a wide receiver during a 7-on-7 drill Tuesday. He dropped to the ground in pain and screamed before being carted off the field with a towel covering his head. He has 202 tackles, four interceptions, a fumble recovery and sack in three seasons. His loss is another blow to a Cleveland defense looking to rebound from a poor season and already short-handed with linebackers Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (neck injury) and Jordan Hicks (retired) ruled out. With Emerson out, Greg Newsome likely will move into the No. 2 corner spot opposite Pro Bowler Denzel Ward. Both Emerson and Newsome also played some nickel back, covering slot receivers. I grew up in Texas, where we learned pretty young: There's a tornado watch (which means, 'The conditions for a tornado are present, so keep an eye out'), and then there's a tornado warning (which means, 'AHHH! There's a tornado!!'). 'Hug watch' has, in the social media era, been a way for fans, broadcasters and writers alike to get a heads up that a player might have been traded in the middle of a game — they go around hugging their teammates goodbye, and off they go. Advertisement Last night, Twins closer Jhoan Duran was caught on the broadcast giving a hug to his bullpen catcher Frank Nigro. And look, Minnesota is 51-56. Duran is a top-tier closer having a great year. He's one of a few Twins whose names keep popping up in trade rumors. 'The conditions for a trade are present, so keep an eye out …' But sometimes a hug is just a hug. Duran is still a member of the Twins. For now. There was one trade yesterday, though. Between games of a doubleheader, the Blue Jays and Orioles made a swap — Baltimore sent reliever Seranthony Dominguez to the visitors' clubhouse in exchange for 23-year-old RHP Jauron Watts-Brown who — believe it or not — was also playing against the team to whom he was traded. Padres right-hander Dylan Cease is one of the biggest stars available on the trade market. Perhaps it should come as no surprise, then, that Cease is at the top of the Astros' wish list as the trade deadline nears, according to sources briefed on the team's discussions. Cease, 29, would stabilize the Astros' injury-depleted rotation for the rest of the season, and join All-Star right-hander Hunter Brown and left-hander Framber Valdez to give the team a potentially dominant trio in a postseason series. The Astros, while dealing with lingering injuries to designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, All-Star shortstop Jeremy Pena and All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes, also are in the market for a hitter. Advertisement The challenge for the Astros might be finding a suitable match with the Padres, who are only interested in trading the pitcher if they can improve their current major-league roster. Acquiring Cease and the remainder of his $13.75 million salary also would almost assure the Astros will cross the luxury tax for a second consecutive season. With a league-leading 17 players on the injured list, the Astros would prefer not to trade young, controllable major leaguers. Yet their farm system, according to Keith Law, ranks 29th in the league.
