Biggest Lamb Champs comes to Loftus
Music, food, and enjoyment with friends and family were the order of the day, all centred around mouth-watering lamb meat. Artists like Ricus Nel, Jan Jan Jan, and Ichnus had feet tapping, while the smell of lamb on the spit kept everyone anticipating the feast that was coming.
This is the fourth time that this annual event has taken place, and CEO of The Southern African Agri Initiative (SAAI), Francois Rossouw, says that this past weekend was the largest they've ever held.
Some were brave enough to enter the ice competition, and 40 entrants even took to the stage to eat a sheep's head.
'It's about what the consumer thinks about the lamb, how they experience and what the taste is like. So, we invite farmers from all nine provinces to come showcase their lamb.
'We invite the public as well because we want to shorten the value chain, and we want to introduce the consumer to the farmer.
'We don't have this connection any more between the consumer, who has someone who has stayed on a farm or knows someone who owns a farm.
'We want them to meet the farmers who produce the meat we enjoy on the braai on a Saturday,' Rossouw said.
JP Nel of the Enkelbos Farm, in the Stella district, North West, emerged as the winner of Lamb Champs Pretoria 2025 with his Blackhead Dorper. His lamb impressed the judges and earned him first place.

Dog fair fetches big support for shelters
The Proud Dog Salon recently hosted a charity dog fair where Centurion residents and animal lovers came together to support it. Hosted by animal lover Dawn Carter, the event took place at the Doringkloof Mall and drew generous donations from animal lovers across the area. According to Carter, the event was aimed at raising funds and food donations for various animal shelters, including the Tshwane SPCA. 'People had to bring a bag of dog or cat food, a blanket or contribute a small entry fee – every cent and item went directly to local animal causes,' she explained. She said she had worked with dogs since 1981. She bred labradors in her younger years and has been deeply involved in animal welfare ever since. 'My love for animals, especially dogs and cats, is insurmountable. I just felt I needed to assist somehow, and this was one small way to make a difference.' She said a R500 cash donation was earmarked for the care of the feral cats living at the mall. 'All of the food and supplies were distributed to Woodrock Animal Rescue, the SPCA, and a group of dedicated women who feed the mall's feral cat population.' Carter said she believes events like these have a huge impact, not just on the animals, but also on the people who care for them. She added that plans are already underway for another charity fair in late February or March next year. 'The main idea is to have a fun morning in the sun and raise as much food as possible for all the homeless dogs and cats,' she explained. The event also had a dog trainer who showed how to train your dog, and Leigh Roos from Good Scents gave a demo and insights about sniff courses. Carter said people are also welcome to drop off donations at her salon at the Doringkloof Mall at any time. Laerskool Skuilkrans Marks 50 Years with festival
Laerskool Skuilkrans recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a community-centred event called Kransklopfees, hosted on the school grounds in Murrayfield. The festival-style event was open to the public and welcomed a large number of families, former learners, and residents, many of whom had long-standing ties to the school. The day offered something for all ages, from food and toy stalls to performances by well-known Afrikaans artists, including Demi Lee Moore, Irene-Louise van Wyk, and Tannie Matie. The school also brought in staging and sound equipment to create a proper music and entertainment experience, a big moment for learners and parents alike. The selling of popular items like sunglasses and snacks at vendor stands became small highlights of the day. Kransklopfees also gave alumni a chance to return and reflect, as many of them are now parents with children at the school.
