Calgary Stampeders weather delay, knock off top-spot Saskatchewan Roughriders

Yahoo2 days ago
How's this for a shocker? The top-spot Calgary Stampeders.
It wasn't what many fans — if any — expected to see from a team in transition coming into the 2025 Canadian Football League campaign.
Yet after Saturday's smoke-delayed — and dominate — victory over the host Saskatchewan Roughriders, there are the Stampeders on top of the CFL standings with a surprising 4-1 record.
It's the second straight week the Stamps have knocked off an unbeaten team on the schedule — this one in 24-10 fashion at Regina's Mosaic Stadium.
'We came up with the win,' an excited Stampeders rookie receiver Damien Alford, one of the stars of the triumph in Saskatchewan, told QR Calgary post-game.
'We've put ourselves in the mindset that no matter who was in front of us, we just have to go out there and play our type of football — and that's exactly what we did.'
Indeed, a week after dispatching of the undefeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers on the home turf of McMahon Stadium, the Stamps travelled to Regina to play the 4-0 Roughriders as the heavy underdog again.
When they arrived Friday, however, they were met not only by long odds but a smoke delay that created a health hazard and persisted throughout the evening, postponing the game overnight.
But that didn't distract the Red and White from going out and continuing to prove they have quickly meshed into a strong CFL side — solid enough to get the mighty road win and climb into first place in not only the West Division but the entire league.
'We're happy,' added Alford. 'But we know we're still early in the season and we've still got more to do.'

Notes: Dan Campbell talks how special Detroit is as a sports town

Detroit Lions' coach Dan Campbell is a popular guy these days. Just a few days ago, he joined 96.7 am in Dallas to discuss how much he loves being in Detroit. We love you too, Dan. And while he still has some free time before training camp kicks off for Detroit later this month, he jumped on, 'The LiucciCast,' hosted by Billy Liucci over on the TexAgs YouTube channel. Advertisement Early on in the show, Liucci lets viewers and listeners know that he and Campbell are close, and you can certainly tell. Campbell, who is typically very comfortable talking to whoever, seemed especially at home talking with his old friend. The two talked about a ton of different subjects in the nearly hour-long episode. From their time together at Texas A&M, to Campbell's coaching and playing journey that led to him to Detroit. 'You go to Detroit right now, and it's in the building, in the tunnels, it's whoever is getting on and off the elevator,' said Liucci of the feeling in the city after the first playoff win back in 2023. 'It means a lot you know, and I have said this before, but I had my eyes open to this place when I played here,' said Campbell. 'Oh my god, this is a sleeping giant. This could be one of the best places ever to come and play and be a part of this. They love their Detroit Lions, they love sports. It's just waiting. If you could just get everything aligned properly, bring in the right pieces, the right people—this could be something special.' If you have the time, I highly recommend giving the entire interview a listen or watch. You can watch the entire episode right here. And now, onto the rest of today's notes: Advertisement Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston wrote about Lions' linebacker Grant Stuard's perspective on football, as well as his annual youth football camp. Congrats to Lions' rookie guard Miles Frazier on his recent engagement. One of my favorite moments from the series right here. Lions' rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa joined, 'Up & Adams,' with host Kay Adams to discuss his Lambeau Leap aspirations in Week 1. Blue Jays sign former All-Star pitcher in surprise free agent opportunity

The Toronto Blue Jays are taking a chance on a former All-Star pitcher who has fallen off from his peak. They've signed left-handed pitcher Joe Mantiply, according to the team's transaction log. Advertisement Mantiply, with a quirky southpaw delivery, was an NL All-Star for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022. He struggled to start this season, allowing 17 runs in 9.2 innings to lead to his release. Mantiply was a bit of a journeyman early in his career. He made his MLB debut for the Tigers in 2016, then wasn't back in the majors until 2019 for one outing with the Yankees. He got shelled in four Arizona outings in 2020, but then was great in 2021 with a 3.40 ERA. His All-Star season in 2022 featured a 2.85 ERA and almost exactly a strikeout per inning. MORE: Why Nationals chose Eli Willits over Ethan Holliday at No. 1 overall pick Advertisement In 2023 and 2024 (4.62 ERA, 3.92 ERA), Mantiply was still useful if not a star. But this season, nothing went his way. The 34-year old will try to work his way up from the Blue Jays' Florida Complex League team. If all goes well, the 6-foot-4 left-hander could help down the stretch of the season. If not, it was a low-risk opportunity taken by the Blue Jays. MORE MLB DRAFT:
