Beijing - Saba:
Welsh sprinter Jeremiah Azu clinched the gold medal in the men's 60-meter race on the first day of the World Indoor Athletics Championships currently being held in Nanjing, China.
Azu recorded a time of 6.49 seconds, while Australia's Lachlan Kennedy secured the silver medal. The 23-year-old Welsh sprinter achieved a personal best, maintaining an undefeated record this year. He edged out Kennedy by a mere hundredth of a second in an exhilarating final that saw their American rival, Ronnie Baker, suffer a hamstring injury just before the finish line.
South African sprinter Akani Simbine took the bronze medal with a time of 6.54 seconds after another top contender, Puerto Rico's Eloy Bennett, stumbled early in the race and was unable to continue.
This title marks Azu's second major international victory, following his first win in the same event at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, earlier this month.

American Jessica Pegula Bids Farewell to Wimbledon in Stunning Upset

London – SABA: In a major shock at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula of the United States was knocked out in the first round on Tuesday by Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto, ranked 116th in the world. The Italian player needed just 57 minutes to secure a straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-3) over her American opponent, marking her first win against Pegula in their second career meeting. This loss comes as a huge blow for Pegula, who had high hopes for a deep run at Wimbledon. Her participation followed just two days after winning the Bad Homburg Open in Germany, where she defeated Poland's Iga Świątek in the final. The 2023 US Open runner-up has had a disappointing performance in Grand Slams this year, having previously exited in the third round of the Australian Open against Serbia's Olga Danilović and the round of 16 at Roland Garros at the hands of world No. 361 French player Lois Boisson. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Italian, Cocciaretto, has never advanced past the third round at Wimbledon. Her best Grand Slam performance remains a round of 16 appearance at last year's French Open. This unexpected result shakes up the women's draw at Wimbledon, leaving fans wondering if Cocciaretto can capitalize on this momentum for a deeper run in the tournament. Palestinian Football Association documents martyrdom of 785 athletes & staff, destruction of 288 sports facilities since October 7, 2023

Ramallah – Saba: The Palestinian Football Association has documented the martyrdom of 785 athletes and administrative staff across various sports in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank since the start of the genocide committed by Israeli occupation forces on October 7, 2023. Susan Al-Shalabi, Vice President of the Association, stated, "The Association has recorded the martyrdom of 785 players, staff, and administrators from various sports during the Israeli genocide, the vast majority of them in the Gaza Strip, including 23 in the West Bank." In a statement to Anadolu Agency, she clarified that "among the martyrs are 437 football players, 15 of whom were from the West Bank." Al-Shalabi explained that "the Association is attempting to verify the numbers through player registration documents and updates from its branch in Gaza." She added, "However, the announced figures are not final due to missing persons still under the rubble and the difficulty of accessing all affected areas because of Israeli bombardment and the blockade imposed on the Strip." Regarding damaged sports facilities, the Vice President of the Palestinian Football Association said, "The Israeli aggression has led to the total or partial destruction of 288 sports facilities, including 21 in the occupied West Bank, encompassing stadiums, sports halls, and club facilities." Al-Shalabi called for "an end to the deliberate Israeli targeting of Palestinian sports and the protection of athletes and facilities in the West Bank and Gaza." With American and European support, the Israeli occupation army has continued to commit genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, resulting in the martyrdom of 56,531 Palestinian citizens, the majority of whom are children and women, and injuring 133,642 others as of Monday. The toll is not final, as thousands of victims remain under the rubble and in the streets, unreachable by rescue teams. Simultaneously with the genocide in Gaza, the Israeli occupation army and settlers have escalated attacks in the West Bank, including East Quds, leading to the martyrdom of at least 986 Palestinians and the injury of around 7,000 others, according to Palestinian sources.
