Body found by police confirmed to be missing Colombian woman
Yajaira Castro Mendez, 46, was reported missing to the Metropolitan Police on May 31, having left her home in Ilford on the morning of May 29.
An investigation was launched and 51-year-old Juan Francisco Toledo, of Lambeth, south London, was arrested on June 4 and subsequently charged with murder.
Police conducted a search for Ms Castro Mendez and found a body in the Bolderwood area of Hampshire on Saturday, which has now been formally identified as her.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Sean Beasley said: 'This is a very sad development in the investigation and our thoughts are very much with Yajaira's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
'Officers have been working around the clock and continue to investigate the circumstances.
'There are still crime scenes in place and we're working closely with Hampshire Police. We thank the community for their patience as we carry out our investigation and we continue to appeal to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to please come forward.'
Francisco Toledo, who police have said was known to the victim, was remanded in custody after appearing at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on June 6 to attend the Old Bailey on Tuesday.
Ms Castro Mendez's disappearance was initially treated as a missing person investigation led by local officers but the investigation was transferred to the Met's Specialist Crime Command on June 5, after a range of extensive further inquiries suggested she had come to harm.

Residents tell of waking to gunshot sounds after man is murdered in north London
Metropolitan Police officers found the victim with gunshot injuries in Dynevor Road, Stoke Newington, in the early hours of Tuesday. A murder investigation has been launched but no arrests have been made. Liza Dodds, 58, a youth worker who lives opposite Dynevor Road, said: 'My husband woke up and said there was gunshots. The instant reaction was 'how do you know?' 'We both got up and had a look. A police officer was doing CPR where the person fell. It seemed like they were going forever.' Another resident said: 'I heard a few gunshots and the first thing I thought was that it was fireworks, because you don't expect it to be a gun. 'I was trying to sleep but then later I heard sirens from the police cars.' One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: 'We were out when it happened so we didn't hear or see anything. 'But when we came back at around 1am, the whole area was cordoned off and the police officers told us that it will be a crime scene for a couple of days.' Four forensic officers in scrubs and masks were at the scene on Tuesday afternoon, alongside several police officers. A Lime bike was lying flat in the cordoned area. The forensic officers used torches to investigate underneath the nine cars parked on the street. Scotland Yard said the man's next of kin have been told and a post-mortem examination will take place. Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke said: 'Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to the tragic death of this man. 'We understand this incident will cause concern within the Stoke Newington community, however we do believe this to be an isolated incident at this stage of the investigation with no wider risk to the general public.' It is the sixth fatal shooting in London so far this year.

Thomas Partey is still closing in on a deal to join Villarreal after appearing in court for an initial hearing having been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Partey was charged by the Metropolitan Police just four days after his contract with Arsenal expired on July 1. The Ghanaian international is now set to join Villarreal and has already undergone his medical with the Champions League side. Partey is expected to join on an initial 12-month contract with the option to extend for another year. The move comes as Partey awaits to stand trial for the aforementioned charges, which are alleged to have taken place between 2021 and 2022. The charge of sexual assault was raised by a third alleged victim and is said to have taken place in February 2022. Metropolitan Police began their investigation into Partey in February 2022 when they received a report of rape before bringing charges against the footballer in July 2025. Partey has previously denied all charges against him. In his first court appearance after being charged, Partey was granted conditional bail following a short hearing. His bail conditions include that he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel. However, Partey will still be able to continue his playing career with Villareal, with The Chief Magistrate, Paul Goldspring, saying on Tuesday: 'I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now.' Being accused or under investigation for any offence does not preclude a player from signing for a La Liga club. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is still waiting for the player's signing and subsequent registration to be made official. Timothy Tinson jailed for life over Beverley town centre murder
