Ron Perlman on Hellboy, the LA fires and Trump: ‘A snake-oil con-artist who'd sell you bad vodka and swampland in New Jersey'
Though he introduces himself as 'Ron from Brooklyn', the actor, who is a few weeks shy of 75, is sitting at home in Los Angeles. No, the fires didn't touch him, but the nearest ones were only three miles away, close enough to make him jittery. 'Scary times,' he says. His voice rumbles like a freight train. Tom Waits, whom he was once plausibly but falsely rumoured to be playing in a movie, sounds like Charles Hawtrey by comparison.
Perlman has lived in LA since the 1980s, when he was one of the leads in the hit romantic fantasy series Beauty and the Beast. (The Terminator's Linda Hamilton was the other.) He won a Golden Globe award and received two Emmy nominations for the show. But Perlman's fame was curiously manageable. He got the best restaurant tables, yet no one knew what he really looked like beneath the leonine disguise he wore for the role. One magazine voted him the sexiest man of the year – in his Beast makeup.
No prosthetics were needed for his new film, the atmospheric, old-fashioned, black-and-white boxing drama Day of the Fight, in which he plays Stevie, who is training Irish Mike (Michael Pitt) for his latest bout. 'When you say 'old-fashioned', I mean, sure, no one's wearing spandex,' Perlman concedes. 'But it's all about friendship and love. Mistakes, victories and failures. To me, that's not old-fashioned. It's the kind of movie I could wallow in for days.'
The director is Jack Huston, whose grandfather John made the sweat- and booze-soaked 1972 boxing classic Fat City. Day of the Fight conveys a decent sense of life in a spit-and-sawdust gym, and features some high-calibre cameos (Joe Pesci, Steve Buscemi). The worst you could say is that there's not enough Ron Perlman in it. But it proves that he has few equals when it comes to evoking an entire existence in a flash. He growls his first line ('Hey asshole!') and most of the others, which include 'Kid, I love ya' and 'Get da fuck outta here!'
Leading roles aren't his thing anyway, unless you count occasional grotesques such as the carnival strongman in the twisted dreamscape of The City of Lost Children (1995), co-directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie), or the horned, tomato-red hero of Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy adventures. Del Toro stood his ground against the studio, which wanted to cast The Rock or Vin Diesel, and modelled the character so closely on Perlman that when the actor flirted with using a different voice, the director said: 'What are you doing? Just be Ron Perlman and that will be Hellboy.'
Personality-wise, there isn't much separating him from his infernal alter ego. 'The character's number one charm is that he's a bit of an underachiever,' Perlman says. 'He's a superhero who'd rather watch the Marx brothers and play with his cats and eat pizza than save the world. But he does it because the world is a fucking mess. Someone's got to. He does it reluctantly. And that's how I do everything.'
If Perlman sees himself as an underachiever, directors don't agree. Many have kept coming back to him for more. He made three films with Jeunet, the best of which is the cruelly underrated Alien Resurrection (1997). Three with Jean-Jacques Annaud, too, including the ones that launched him as a film actor after a decade in theatre, and established him as the king of performing in prosthetics: first, the prehistoric Quest for Fire (1981), for which a glossary of grunts and growls was specially devised by Anthony Burgess; and second, a chilling adaptation of Umberto Eco's medieval whodunit The Name of the Rose (1986), in which Perlman's character was falsely accused of Satanism and burned at the stake.
Spending four or five hours in the makeup chair for these films, and for Beauty and the Beast, led to him being called the Lon Chaney of his generation. It served a psychological purpose, too. 'When I was a young man, I was so uncomfortable in my own skin. I was given this gift of putting layers of stuff between me and the real world so that I could free myself to play these characters. Then in my mid-40s, I experienced a kind of détente with my body: 'Oh, maybe you're not so bad after all.''
His relationship with del Toro has stretched from the Mexican auteur's gory 1992 debut, Cronos, to Nightmare Alley (2021) and Pinocchio (2022), with only the occasional gap. 'He has a feel for my skillset, which is limited,' Perlman says. Does he really think that? 'Well, I was hoping you might correct me,' he deadpans. When I do, perhaps a fraction too late, he perks up: 'There you go! I was spearfishing for validation and I got what I wanted.'
In 1990, del Toro, then a special-effects makeup expert, sent him a handwritten fan letter. At the meeting that followed, Perlman witnessed the budding director's unorthodox approach to dinner. 'Guillermo said, 'I like to start with dessert.'' At the end of the meal came soup. 'By the time we stood up, we were like brothers who had been separated at birth.'
Once shooting on Cronos was finished, Perlman threw a Hollywood bash for del Toro – he calls it his 'I've found this genius film-maker and I want you all to meet him because he's going to become one of the greats' party. Hamilton brought along her then partner James Cameron, which sparked an enduring friendship between the Avatar director and del Toro. That means Perlman can be indirectly credited for the moment at the 1998 Academy Awards when Cameron – furious that Harvey Weinstein had sacked del Toro from his second film, Mimic – nearly lamped him with the Oscar he had just won for Titanic. 'We all wanted to take a crack at Harvey,' shrugs Perlman.
The closest he ever got was urinating on his own hands before pressing the flesh with the feared producer. Recounting that story on Twitter in 2018 led Perlman into a spat with Donald Trump Jr, who accused him of knowing about Weinstein's predatory behaviour and yet doing nothing. 'I never said I knew Harvey was a rapist,' Perlman shot back. 'I did know he was a prick, though.'
It was the start of an outspoken streak that he has only recently reined in. He was the last of the cast members of Sons of Anarchy, the series in which he played the leader of a biker gang, to join Twitter. 'They were all saying, 'Ron, it's fun!' I didn't have any desire to exercise that muscle until the arrival of our 45th – and now 47th – president. I'd grown up in New York so I knew everything there was to know about that snake-oil salesman con-artist. I was so offended to see this guy who'd sell you shitty steak and bad vodka and swampland in New Jersey now emerging in a leadership position. And yeah, it got hot and heavy.'
You could say that. At one point in 2020, Perlman challenged Republican senator Ted Cruz to a fight online. The actor was still taunting Republicans last summer, when hopes were high for Kamala Harris to take the presidency. He tweeted at Elon Musk: 'Yo elon! [sic] You sweating yet?'
He was hardly alone in believing the election would have a happier outcome. How is he dealing with the fallout now? 'I was gonna ask you,' he says glumly. 'It's all still as impossible to process as the fires in LA. This is going to have to run its course.'
It's a long way from Hellboy. But then he offers a glimmer of hope: 'I'm spending a lot of secretive time working on my version of counteracting. If I get lucky, I'm going to go back to being very public again.' Political ambitions? 'No. A counter-movement.' Wait, what? 'If I have anything to announce, I'll come to you, I swear to God. But that's all I'm going to say for now, my friend.'
I think back to his description of Hellboy, and how he goes off reluctantly to save the world because it's a mess. Well, someone's got to. Why not Ron Perlman?
Day of the Fight is streaming on the Icon Film Channel, and is in cinemas from 7 March

Diogo Jota's 'best friend' at Liverpool shares heartbreaking tribute after crash
One player who was particularly close with Diogo Jota at Liverpool has written a lengthy tribute to his former team-mate after he died in a devastating car crash in Spain on Thursday Former Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has published a lengthy tribute to Diogo Jota after the tragic news of his sudden death. The pair spent five years as team-mates at Anfield and struck up a particularly fond friendship, with Jota even referring to the Irishman as his closest pal on Merseyside. The football community was rocked on Thursday after it emerged Jota, 28, had died in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva. The pair were travelling in a Lamborghini near Zamora in Spain when it veered off the road and burst into flames, killing both before emergency services arrived. Figures in the sport from across the world have paid tribute to the Premier League champion. And now Kelleher, who attended Jota's wedding to wife Rute Cardoso less than a fortnight prior to his death, has penned his own heartfelt message to his late former team-mate. "Jots. Can't believe I'm writing this right now and I'm finding it hard to put into words," read the 26-year-old's Instagram post. "I'm absolutely devastated by this news. All my thoughts and condolences are with Rute and their three beautiful kids and Diogo and Andre's family. It was a such a pleasure to get to know you over these years and to share some special memories on the pitch and even more so off it. "You became one of my closest friends in football. We bonded over all things sports watching any football match we could find often your brother Andre's game on your iPad. "I was surprised a lad from Portugal loved sports such as darts, snooker and horse racing so much and some of my best memories were having a laugh watching them with you. "You were such a fun genuine, normal down to earth and loving family man and always very competitive. I'm gonna miss our pre match programme quiz. I feel so blessed and grateful to have seen you on your happiest day, the day of your wedding and to be able to share in that day with you was special. I'll never forget it. "You were deeply loved by everyone at the club, the city and all over the world. It's gonna hurt for a long time and I'm gonna miss you so much but I feel so lucky to have got know you and have such a good friend. Love you Diogo." The testimony revealed the extent of their bond off the field, illustrated by the fact Kelleher was present for one of the biggest days in Jota's life. Kelleher, who joined Brentford in an £18million deal earlier this summer, and Liverpool let-back Andy Robertson were each present as Jota and teenage sweetheart Rute tied the knot in their hometown of Porto. Both Kelleher and Robertson were also at Jota's side when they took in some horse races at Gloucestershire racecourse together in March. However, it's clear their bond ran far deeper than sport alone. Jota previously attested to Kelleher being his best friend in the Liverpool squad in a union few might have expected. When asked whom his best Anfield pal was in 2024, the Portuguese replied: "Nowadays I would say Caoimhin. There have been a few departing the squad. "We play a quiz game, we play each other. There is one on the match day programme. It is a good way to start the match day action." One fan replied to Kelleher's sorrowful post, saying: "Sorry for your loss Caoimhin. We could all see how close you are. It's absolutely devastating." Republic of Ireland team-mates John Egan and Adam Idah also responded with love heart emojis as a show of support for their countryman.

Flight attendant uncovers one 'disgusting' thing passengers skip before boarding
A veteran flight attendant has taken to TikTok to voice her biggest pet peeves, including one thing she thinks travellers should "go to prison" for A flight attendant is calling out passengers who break one etiquette rule. Taking to social media to air her frustration, she says passengers should not fly at all if they commit this one faux pas. On her TikTok account, cabin crew member Cher (@cherdallas), says she thinks travellers should 'go to prison' for not showering before getting on a plane. According to Cher, who is a six-year flight attendant, these are the worst kind of travellers. 'There is zero reason that I should be smelling a stranger's body odour Wash yourself. You are going to be shoulder to shoulder with strangers. Show up clean or don't come at all.' In the comments, one user agreed, saying: 'A shower plus clean clothes together will stop the stench. If it's transatlantic with a layover, change into a different clean shirt and use a wet paper towel on your torso in the bathroom stall.' However some users were quick to point out that travel issues like cancelled flights and running through the airport might be the reason some show up less than fresh. One user wrote: 'The body odor thing is absolute. However if they are on this flight [because] another was cancelled or something and they had to sleep at the airport maybe hand out body wipes'. Another chimed in: 'Ever had to run 20 minutes to a connecting flight with luggage in tow? You'll sweat, my dear, and there may be an odour.' To this Cher says there is an easy fix. 'Wear deodorant ?? It's pretty simple, it works in a preventative way,' she wrote in response. But body odour isn't the only thing that Cher thinks should be '100 percent against the law' on planes. She lists a number of pet peeves that passengers are guilty of, including one that's sure to annoy most passengers: playing videos or music out loud from their device. According to Cher: 'It is no one else's problem except yours that you didn't charge you AirPods or you didn't bring headphones. 'Why are you making it everyone else's problem around you?' She continues: 'I don't care if your kid is gonna cry that they can't listen to cocomelon on full blast. That is less annoying than hearing it off of their iPad.' Her other gripe is actually aimed at flight attendants, not passengers. She calls out her fellow colleagues for making 'a bunch of unnecessary announcements'. She said while she understands that the profession draws in extroverted people who like meeting new people, talking can be done in-person instead of over the speaker system. That said, she acknowledges that not all announcements are unnecessary. 'There are basic ones that we are required to make. I simply don't agree with putting on a whole production unless you are on super fun afternoon flight.'

'I tried to watch Netflix on my fiance's iPad but what I found ruined my life'
A woman has been left devastated after uncovering a disgusting family secret. A young woman has been left disgusted after uncovering a life-changing family secret. The discovery has rocked her relationship with her partner, mum, and young brother. The 24 year old opened up about the devastating situation in a post on Reddit, where she shared that she and her fiancé had been together for several years. The couple knew each other from growing up in the same area and she told how her partner's good rapport with her mother was important, given her "real-life Rory and Lorelai from Gilmore Girls" bond with her mum, reports the Mirror. Posting on the social media forum, she wrote: "My fiancé and I have been together since we were 17 and 18 years old. Honestly, he was always kind, handsome, funny and everyone used to say I was so lucky to have the whole package. "I felt so lucky too. He always treated me with love and respect, so this makes everything just so shocking for me. I have always had a good relationship with my mum. "It has always been her and I against the world. My dad died in an accident when I was little. My mum dated guys on and off and they were usually cool but nothing really passed the early stages." However, the dynamic dramatically changed when, four years prior, her mum, then aged 42, announced an unexpected pregnancy. The daughter explained: "Although she was sort of dating someone recently (I didn't meet the guy but knew she went on dates) it still was a big shock. She never thought she could be pregnant at her age (she had me when she was super young - an oopsie) and I can tell she was stressed and worried. "I decided to support her since she has always supported me and tried to reassure her. She then had my brother who is now three years old. I have a close relationship with my brother, I have helped take care of him since he was born and I just love the little guy." She shared that her fiancé also stepped in to help entertain her young brother, taking him out for ice cream, to the playground, and to the swimming pool during the summer months. "Nothing was weird - he was just my then-boyfriend spending time with my brother and me," she added. However, her world was turned upside down when she borrowed her fiancé's iPad to watch Netflix after her laptop died. She said: "At some point during binge-watching a series on Netflix, my laptop died and I was too lazy to go get my charger, so I just took my fiancé's iPad. I know the password but honestly never used it before. "The iPad logged in and I got a bunch of messages pinging (I guess he hasn't used it in a while too?). Anyway, this got my attention and I went to check it out and I found everything. My mum's number wasn't under her name but I recognised the number and verified it with my phone. "She was telling him she felt guilty and that I should know. He said he also felt guilty but couldn't lose me and they f*cked it up. "She said that it was unfair for my brother to never not know his dad, and that if he could live having his son around not behaving like a dad but a brother-in-law. I broke down. What the actual F!" Digging deeper, she found several photos of her mum pregnant, her brother as a newborn, and other snapshots of his early life. She confessed: "I couldn't any more. I cried for what seemed ages and I waited for my boyfriend to come back home. I wish I was one of those women who can pretend and get things together before confronting the cheater but I can't. "He came back later that night (around 11.30pm) and I just handed him the iPad with the conversation opened and watched his face turn pale. I demanded an explanation, when? how? why? and he was reluctant at first, but knew he had to answer. Apparently, a few years ago while I was away with some friends (girls' trip), my fiancé and mum had dinner together. "This isn't strange since he has been part of the family for so long, sometimes my mum and fiancé would eat together at our place even if I was busy with sports or out - I did the same with his parents. Somehow (unclear how since he couldn't explain it well) one thing led to another and they ended up sleeping together. "They felt guilty but apparently not guilty enough because they slept together two or three more times, using the excuse of meeting up to discuss how to tell me. Apparently, when my mum got pregnant they stopped sleeping together and decided to not tell me, since my fiancé 'loved me and couldn't lose me' and my mum didn't want to lose her daughter." Horrified, she ended the engagement and, at the time of posting, she had not yet discussed the ordeal with her mother. She moved in with a friend and is seeking therapy because she feels unable to cope with the situation by herself. In her confusion about what steps to take next, the woman has sought guidance from online communities. She confessed: "I feel bad for my brother since I really love him, but I can't be around him now, I just can't. "I feel like it would remind me of all those times we talked about having kids, I would be his baby mama, only baby mama, we talked about this future since we were 17 years old, so I want to puke every time I think how I was actually taking care of his child with someone else, while still having those dreams. I wanna puke." Reacting to her story, one social media user expressed: "Damn. Just damn. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Seems like hell on Earth. You've got everyone here's support and keep doing you! You're doing great already and just keep moving forward, wishing you the best!". Another advised: "The best thing to do is to get into counseling, you'll want to mentally prepare yourself for the inevitable. You said it yourself, they most likely will try to confront you at either work or when you're out and about and the last thing you want is to be caught off guard and not be ready to handle that confrontation on your own!". Another user empathised: "Omg you poor thing. Betrayed by the two people, you should be able to trust the most. They are both just so disgusting. "I can never understand when you read about mothers or sisters doing this. Your mother is absolutely vile. Lowest of the low. Your ex is just trash. "You are so much better than either one of them. My heart just hurts for you. You deserve a much better mother than the one you got. Please never speak to or forgive either one of them. Cut them both dead."
