As poverty rises, Jakarta's iconic puppets caught in row over dignity and desperation

Malay Maila day ago
JAKARTA, Aug 1 — In the sweltering streets of Jakarta, buskers carry towering, hollow puppets and pass around a bucket for donations. Now, they fear becoming outlaws.
City authorities say they will crack down on use of the sacred ondel-ondel puppets, which can stand as tall as a truck, and they are drafting legislation to remove what they view as a street nuisance.
Performances featuring the puppets—originally used by Jakarta's Betawi people to ward off evil spirits—will be allowed only at set events.
The ban could leave many ondel-ondel buskers in Jakarta without a job.
'I am confused and anxious. I fear getting raided or even arrested. But what can I do? I need money to eat,' Adi Sutisna, a 26-year-old Jakarta native who works as an ondel-ondel busker, told AFP.
Adi, who only graduated from elementary school, has been working as an ondel-ondel busker for seven years, earning $7 on a good day to provide for his wife and five-year-old daughter.
Ondel-ondel is the pride of the native Jakarta tribe, the Betawi people.
Traditional performances were accompanied by instruments for festive and celebratory events, including weddings, circumcisions, and welcome ceremonies for honourable guests.
Cyril Raoul Hakim, spokesman for Jakarta governor Pramono Anung, told AFP the ban was still being drafted with 'the preservation of Betawi culture' in mind and it would be put to legislators soon.
'We hope it will be passed not too long from now,' he said.

'Very hot inside'
Over time, ondel-ondel have been increasingly used by buskers who sway the puppets to music from loudspeakers, seeking money on the roadside, at traffic lights, and in the alleyways of Jakarta's densely populated neighbourhoods.
The city administration has long wanted to ban ondel-ondel busking, arguing that the practice sullies the dignity of the cultural icon.
Bureaucrats believe roadside busking undermines the puppets' cultural significance.
But many Jakartans rely on the entertainment to bring in much-needed cash.
According to government data, the number of people living below the poverty line in metropolitan Jakarta—a megalopolis of 11 million people—was up from 362,000 in 2019 to 449,000 as of September 2024.
The Central Statistics Bureau says the poverty line in Indonesia in 2025 is just over one dollar a day.
'The ondel-ondel is heavy; it is very hot inside,' said Adi.
'But I do it anyway because if I don't, my wife and my kid won't be able to eat.'

'Bothers my soul'
The planned ban has left authentic ondel-ondel performers and makers torn about the preservation of their culture and the plight of the buskers.
Performers such as Fadillah Akbar believe the cultural symbol must be revered, and should not be used to beg for money.
'The problem is that they beg on the street—that's a disturbance, and it bothers my soul,' the 33-year-old ondel-ondel artist said.
He believes ondel-ondel must come in pairs, a woman and a man, and be accompanied by traditional live music instead of a recorded song playing on loudspeakers.
'Of course, I feel bad for the buskers, especially since I know many of them, but it is a cultural icon whose dignity must be upheld,' he said.
The head of Jakarta's public order agency, Satriadi Gunawan, said ondel-ondel busking disturbed road users with loudspeakers and requests for money.
'In Betawi culture, upholding ondel-ondel's dignity is important, and now it is often used to beg for money,' he said.
But some historians disagree, saying limiting the puppet presence on Jakarta's streets could hurt efforts to keep the dwindling tradition alive.
'Banning ondel-ondel busking in the name of culture signifies their lack of understanding for tradition,' said Jakarta-based historian JJ Rizal.
'It proves that not only does the city government not understand culture, but it also endangers the preservation of art.' — AFP

Nintendo's quarterly revenue surges thanks to Switch 2

The Switch 2 smashed industry records by selling 3.5 million units in its first four days. (AFP pic) TOKYO : Nintendo today said quarterly revenue had more than doubled year-on-year thanks to the Switch 2, which became the world's fastest-selling console after its launch in early June. Pent-up demand for the new gadget from the 'Super Mario' gamemaker fuelled fan excitement at the release that saw sold-out pre-orders and midnight store openings. Like the hugely popular original Switch, the Switch 2 is a hybrid console that can be handheld or connected to a television, with a bigger screen and more processing power than its predecessor. It smashed industry records by selling 3.5 million units in its first four days, and Nintendo said today that the figure had increased to 5.8 million units by the end of June. 'Net sales increased significantly in the first quarter, due mainly to the launch of Nintendo Switch 2,' the Japanese company said as it reported a 132% on-year jump in sales for April-June, to ¥572 billion. Net profit in the quarter rose 19% on-year. However, a challenge for Nintendo will be maintaining a supply of hit games for the new system, gaming industry consultant Serkan Toto told AFP. 'There are new games from the Pokemon, Metroid and Kirby franchises coming later this year, but some fans have already started to ask for even more titles,' he said. But 'the launch of Switch 2 has surpassed many people's expectations' and it will be hard for another console to match its strong start, Toto added. 'Nintendo should be able to comfortably ride on this momentum through the holidays and into 2026,' he predicted. 'Major comeback' The company expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 units by the end of March 2026 – a target it left unchanged today. Nathan Naidu of Bloomberg Intelligence said Nintendo was 'likely' to hike this number, having already sold 40% of the target. The Switch 2 launch positions the company 'for a major comeback after four straight years of lacklustre top-line momentum… barring punishing US tariffs that might prompt Nintendo to hike hardware prices', he wrote today. While Nintendo is diversifying into hit movies and theme parks, consoles remain at the core of its business. The original Switch soared in popularity during the pandemic with games such as 'Animal Crossing' striking a chord during long lockdowns worldwide. It has sold 153 million units since its 2017 release, making it the third best-selling console of all time after Sony's PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS. The Switch 2, which has new features including controllers that can also be used like a desktop computer mouse, costs US$449.99 in the US – more expensive than a launch price of US$299.99 for the original. 'Once the hardcore Nintendo fans are tapped out, the company will need to get to the next level by convincing mainstream players to make the jump to Switch 2,' Toto noted. But the postponed launch of the hotly anticipated 'Grand Theft Auto VI' (GTA6) by US publisher Rockstar Games from this year to May 2026 will be a boon, he said. 'If GTA6 (had) launched this year, it would have sucked almost all the oxygen out of the room and made marketing Switch 2 definitely harder for Nintendo.'

Syed Saddiq's Era FM stint called off, says scholarship pledge will proceed as planned

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman's brief foray into broadcast media has ended before it began, with Era FM confirming that its collaboration with the former youth and sports minister will not proceed due to 'unavoidable circumstances'. The move had been widely seen as an unconventional political outreach effort by the Muda founder, who was set to join Era's 3 Pagi Era morning show alongside Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin and Radin. In a statement today, Era FM said the agreement — already formalised — was now void, citing unspecified developments that altered the 'dynamics' of the planned partnership. 'The collaboration was forged in good faith, with mutual understanding and positivity. However, new developments beyond our control have led to a shift in the dynamics between Era and Syed Saddiq,' the statement read. In response, Syed Saddiq said he respected the decision and appreciated the station's transparency, adding that Era and its parent company Astro would still honour the contractual payment. He reiterated that 100 per cent of the funds would be channelled towards scholarships for 20 underprivileged students from his Muar constituency. 'I signed the contract last Thursday and had made it clear my salary would be fully donated as scholarships. The students had already been informed,' he said in a video posted online. 'My parents were meant to attend the announcement. Everything — from discussions to the contract and video shoot — was completed. Then yesterday, I was told the deal would not go through due to certain reasons.' While he declined to specify what led to the cancellation, he hinted there was more to the story, saying: 'That's a tale for another day.' Despite the setback, Syed Saddiq appeared unfazed, framing the incident within a larger message about resilience and faith. 'Am I sad? No. I believe when one door closes, ten more open,' he said, adding that he received offers totalling RM1.06 million on the same day he was informed the radio stint was cancelled.
