NGT takes cognisance of illegal beach buildings on Tamil Nadu's Karikattukuppam beach
Based on a report by TNIE, the bench, comprising judicial member Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member K Satyagopal, sharply criticised the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA) for failing to exercise its authority under the CRZ Notification and Environment Protection Act to curb these unauthorised constructions.
Justice Sathyanarayana noted the NGT's Western Bench had ordered demolitions in a similar case. Satyagopal pointed out that the coastal management authority's current member secretary, AR Rahul Nadh, had previously served as Chengalpattu collector, where CRZ violations have persisted for years without meaningful action.
In April, TNIE reported how land sharks were encroaching upon Chengalpattu's beaches, prompting the Mamallapuram Local Planning Authority to issue notices confirming CRZ violations. These notices mandated restoration of the site to its original state through demolition or alteration within 15 days of receipt. Non-compliance would lead to authorities undertaking demolition, with costs recovered from property owners, and the premises could be locked and sealed. The notices also required halting the use of the buildings within the same period.

'If first-time filmmakers get at least three months' training under professionals, they will come up with better films. Otherwise, there is a possibility of a newcomer getting an opportunity and coming with an amateur movie. I don't want that to happen and suggested the need for training. I said all these for the betterment of movies and the best use of the opportunity provided by the government,' he said, stressing that his concern was for the future of cinema, not against any community.

NGT seeks report from govt on legacy waste lying dumped for years in Bargarh
CUTTACK: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the state Housing and Urban Development department to submit an action taken report (ATR) within four weeks regarding compliance with its earlier orders for the removal of legacy waste in Bargarh town. The legacy waste has been lying untreated in Bargarh for over a decade, posing serious environmental and health risks to nearby residents. Ramakanta Rout and six other residents of Purushotam Nagar in Ward No 15 under the Bargarh municipality had filed the petition seeking criminal proceedings against the authorities for failing to act on NGT's directives issued on March 23, 2023. The Tribunal had ordered the complete treatment of the legacy waste through biomining, micro-composting centres or material recovery facilities by December 31, 2023. The NGT also directed the Odisha government to deposit Rs 1.84 crore in an ESCROW account for remediation efforts by the Bargarh Municipality. The bench comprising Justice B Amit Sthalekar (Judicial Member) and Dr Arun Kumar Verma (Expert Member) reviewed an inspection report submitted by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) along with its affidavit and the Bargarh municipality's reply to a notice. It was revealed that while a detailed project report (DPR) had been prepared and submitted to the government, it was returned for revisions. The revised DPR has now been forwarded to the engineer-in-chief of Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board (OWSSB), Bhubaneswar for further processing. 'We, therefore, direct the Housing and Urban Development department to file its affidavit within four weeks to show what action has been taken,' the bench stated. It also noted that Rs 1.90 crore had already been released by the state government to the Bargarh municipality, which must now submit an affidavit detailing how the funds are being used in line with Tribunal orders. The matter has been listed for the next hearing on September 10.

Maharashtra's Akola district emerges as new link in the fake passport racket case; MP ATS grills Afghan kingpin
BHOPAL: Eastern Maharashtra's third largest city -- the communally and politically sensitive Akola – has emerged as the fourth major link of the recently busted inter-state fake passport racket allegedly run by an Afghan man from Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Sohbat Khan, the alleged mastermind of the racket, is revealing key details during questioning by the Madhya Pradesh Police's anti-terrorism squad (ATS). As per sources privy to the probe, Sohbat's questioning has revealed that a place of worship in Akola district of Maharashtra was a common meeting place of Afghans living in India. It was in Akola, where Sohbat possibly came in contact with Akbar and Iqbal, two other Afghans, who have been illegally living in West Bengal and have managed to get fake Indian passports with the help of the alleged racket operated by Sohbat and local contacts in MP's Jabalpur district. 'When the first three arrests were made in the case, there were just three cities/states on our radar, including Jabalpur (MP), West Bengal and Chhattisgarh. But Sohbat's grilling and the disclosure of Akola in Maharashtra playing an important part in his linkages with Afghan men living illegally in India, has made eastern Maharashtra's communally sensitive city too a part of our investigations,' a senior cop associated with the probe told TNIE on Monday. Sources added that before coming to Jabalpur in around 2010, Sohbat had lived in parts of Maharashtra also, including Nagpur and Akola. So far six arrests have been made in the case by the MP ATS. While four of the arrests, including Sohbat Khan, his two key aides Dinesh Garg (a forest guard working at the district collectorate's election cell), Chandan Thakur (who claims to be an advocate) and Mahendra Kumar Sukhdan have been arrested from Jabalpur, two others Akbar and Iqbal (both Afghans living illegally in India) have been arrested by the ATS from West Bengal, including Howrah.
