Tail-wagging time: Tiny the Fire Dog fires up the Thurston Classic crowd

Yahoo13-06-2025
Tiny the Fire Dog was no foe to the flame on Thursday as the 105,000-cubic foot Dalmatian stood at attention in the sky for the 35th Annual Thurston Classic Joyce Stevens Memorial Night Glow.
The floppy-eared puppy was full of fire, rightfully so as he symbolizes fire service and public safety. Tiny was front and center of the nine balloons for the night glow at Allegheny College's Robertson Athletic Complex, and he had quite a few admirers. The Anderson family was in the sea of hundreds who lined the field. In its 35 years, the Thurston Classic has gained a loyal following. Traveling all the way from Pittsburgh, Erin Anderson recalled her time watching the event as a child.
'I grew up on Doughty (Avenue) and we used to watch and enjoy it,' she said, remembering how she could see the balloons float over her house as she relaxed in the pool. Now, adorned in her Meadville sweatshirt, she brought her own children to see it.
'They were really excited to come down and see it,' she said, noting that they haven't really been old enough to remember it until now.
Eliza, 6, said she was looking forward to seeing all the balloons: '100 percent — I love them.'
She was on the lookout for her favorite colors — pink, purple and yellow — and twirled around, blowing bubbles with her little brother before the big event.
'She was telling — before we left Pittsburgh — everyone about how she was going to see hot air balloons,' Erin said. 'She was bragging because people were like, 'Where are the hot air balloons?' 'You have to go to Meadville to see it,'' she would reply.
Each balloon takes a small crew of around four or five members to help the pilot, who inflates the balloon with cold air, then blasts hot air to make the balloon stand up. The process takes about 15 minutes and is a craft for balloon pilots. Coming from all over the country, the Thurston Classic is a favorite for pilots from all over.
One balloon was left standing after the rest though: Daydreamer.
Standing with its black bottom bellowing into a rainbow top, the balloon is the late Roger Miller's. Miller died just three weeks before the Thurston Classic, and as 'a special sendoff,' his balloon was kept inflated for about five minutes longer than the others, Balloonmeister Alex Jonard II said.
Although the wind gave some of the balloons trouble, it was no match for the Daydreamer, which glowed above them all.
'There's not a dry eye, and there's an empty box of Kleenex here,' Jonard said. 'We appreciate the family letting us have the balloon here for a special tribute.'
The weekend continues with a total of 21 balloons, taking an evening flight scheduled today, followed by morning and evening sanctioned races on Saturday and another race on Sunday morning.

Hysterics As Runt of Dalmatian Litter Shows How He's 'The Bravest of All'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Animal lovers' hearts have melted over a tiny Dalmatian puppy proving his courage against a much-bigger adversary. The Stone family, who post to TikTok under the username @thestonestory101, are proud owners of two Dalmatian dogs, who recently had a litter of puppies. The family's page is full of videos of the puppies growing up and getting their spots (and yes, even watching One Hundred and One Dalmatians together), and one video from June 7 has proven particularly popular. Viewed more than 5.2 million times, it shows the two parent dogs in a room with one puppy—the runt of the litter. The term is given to the smallest and weakest puppy, which can mean extra challenges including a higher risk of health issues during the first week of life, according to Rover. In the video, the mother dog stays close to her pup, licking him and standing over him protectively. The father, meanwhile, doesn't seem sure of what to make of him, and walks cautiously over for a sniff. The runt isn't putting up with it, however—and, tiny as he is, he barks and growls at the much-larger dog; the dad jumps back in fright. In the end, the puppy wins the standoff, and dad walks away, with the runt's tiny noises helping him stand his ground. "The runt is the bravest of all," their owner wrote in the caption. TikTok users loved the sweet clip, many rushing to make references to Disney's One Hundred and One Dalmatians. "Where's the other 100 pups?" one asked, with another posting: "I'm sorry all I see is Pongo, Perdita and one of their pups." And a third commented: "PLS BE CAREFUL IF YOU SEE A WOMAN WITH HAIR THATS HALF BLACK AND HALF WHITE." Others laughed at the father Dalmatian's reaction to his feisty son, with one writing, "The dad is like 'what in FREAKING HELL is this thing,'" and their owner replying: "He's no help!" A Dalmatian puppy stands its ground indoors against its father. A Dalmatian puppy stands its ground indoors against its father. TikTok @thestonestory101 While domestic dogs are descended from wolves, and male wolves help with the raising of cubs, male canines have lost this instinct, and may be a hindrance to the mother and human helpers when it comes to caring for puppies, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). Some dogs may be jealous of the litter, while others who want to play may be too rough with them. The male dog's company could also be a distraction and cause stress to the mother, and it is advised to wait until around six weeks to begin socializing the father with his puppies. Sharp Comebacks, Beam Routines & Sisterhood: A Stick It (2006) Retrospective

The year was 2007, and I was but a chubby little girl with dreams of the balance beam and cute leotards. Stick It might have come out a year prior to my first viewing but it was on heavy rotation, whether it was on TV or begged for at my local Blockbuster (RIP) I was completely absorbed into the world of gymnasts: the drama, the endurance, the bitchin' soundtrack full of Missy Elliot and Blink-182. But recently I decided to put it on for a rewatch and it was like catching up with your friend's cool older sporty sister in the mid-aughts, but with a whole new world of nuance. The movie begins and we are met with one of the coolest 'Sk8ter Girl' breaking and entering gymnastics routines of all time, teeming with BMX bikes and police chases. Our protagonist is introduced as the juvenile delinquent and tumbling retiree Haley Graham who just can't seem to stay out of the eyes of the law. After her latest arrest, she is given the choice of military camp or VGA, she adamantly chooses to channel her inner Cadet Kelly but this world is full of false choices and she's ultimately sent off to Housten to attend the hard, blood, sweat and tear filled facility which is the Vickerman Gymnastics Academy. There she meets the hard-assed coach Vickerman and her teammates: Joanne, Mina, and Wei Wei, who all give us more background on Haley's abrupt dismount from nationals and gymnastics as a whole years befor,e and a deep dive into their catty and competitive world through side eyes, and snippy dialogue. Quickly, Haley and Joanne are pitted against each other, resulting in one of my favorite exchanges in the entire movie: HALEY GRAHAM (about the girls Burt picked for the Classics) They just get their spots handed to them? What about the rest of us? JOANNE I don't like what you're instigating, Haley. HALEY GRAHAM (whispers to herself) Instimulating? JOANNE I have earned my spot. BURT VICKERMAN Girls. JOANNE I'm practically a Dalmatian. HALEY GRAHAM Dalmatians are born with spots. They don't earn them. Which is exactly my point. JOANNE Dogs are people too, Haley! BURT VICKERMAN Very nice, Joanne! Touché! JOANNE Thank you! Slowly, our girls stop competing and begin to conspire! Unpacking the system and using it to their advantage as they compete and train as the story progresses. The end of the film presents us with a turn of events. We end at Nationals and VGA are on to win but our girls realize that their world is built upon a predatory relationship between the athlete, coaches, and judges, and sisterhood as a whole. The girls fight back by scratching or the act of fucking up on purpose for my less attuned reader. As the scores go down the solidarity between our VGA queens only grows in a stylish act of collective rebellian. Nationals are done and dusted and we end the movie with our troop of spandex gilded warriors linked at the arm, proud, and unapologetic. As the credits rolled among the plethora of messages in this movie this one stuck out to me: Gymnastics is girlhood. Flipping, balancing, bruises and performing for points are a package deal growing up as a girl in the not-so distant past and the ever more concerning future. We are shown two sides of the scale in Stick It. Haley who represents the fed up femme. Joanne, who can be compared to every classmate, relative, or friend that's been groomed to despise and compete against other women, Wei Wei, who's desire for perfectionism weakens her individuality. And Mina, who reclaims her oh-so unacceptable fault of one sliver of her bra strap showing after the most difficult routine of the entire movie by showing both in an act of revolt. All four of our reflections of girlhood not only show the different strains of perfection induced exhaustion but the power of finding strength in the girls who stand beside you. Stick It isn't just 2000s angst and MTV style editing. It's about how as women and femmes the real power is in showing up for yourself and each other. In the hypothetical 2000s Teen movie National Championships 2025 or the (TMNC2025 as i've decided to dub it two seconds ago) this one deserves a 10/10 for subversion, soundtrack, and sparkly solidarity.

Woman Adopts Dalmatian Puppy, Quickly Realizes Something Isn't Right

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When thinking about Dalmatians, one typically thinks of their iconic black spots against their white fur, or the equally iconic movie, 101 Dalmatians, but one dog is making headlines after not sporting the famous markings. When Joselyn Reyes adopted her Dalmatian puppy named Eli back in August, she knew Eli was special. She was the smallest puppy in the litter. With siblings significantly larger than her, the owners at the time needed to feed her separately because her siblings would not leave any food for her, Reyes told Newsweek via email. But aside from the dog's size, Eli stood out as the only one in the litter without black spots that Dalmatians are known to have, despite the parents being both purebred. A Dalmatian's spotted pattern is the most distinctive of all American Kennel Club breeds, as it is found in no others, according to the group. Dalmatians are born solid white. Their spots start forming in around two weeks and can continue developing through the dog's first year. "After seeing the siblings, we did think that she might be the only one without spots because they all had theirs developed," Reyes said. And now, as Eli is over 1 year old, her spots have never come out, except the heart-shaped marking on her pink nose. "She is an unbelievably caring Dalmatian," Reyes said. "She has the best connection with our one-year-old son." Even Reyes' cousin couldn't get enough of Eli's adorable spotless fur. The cousin used Reyes' videos of Eli to share the adorable and unique dog on TikTok. The clip, which was posted to the account @ earlier this week, amassed over 1.5 million views. Joselyn Reyes "I know that for dogs to be considered 100% purebred, they need to meet certain breed standards," Reyes said. "However, Eli is not a competition or breeding dog—she comes from two Dalmatians who also weren't bred with those intentions." Confirming Eli was not mixed with any other dog breed, Reyes said she understands that over generations, certain traits may shift or vary, which led to Eli's special coat. Viewer Reactions TikTok viewers immediately fell in love with Eli, noting the rarity of a Dalmatian with zero spots. "Safe from Cruella," joked one person. A second wrote: "She's got all the spots she needs with the heart on her nose." Another added: "Her momma ran out of ink that's all."
