Hyundai names robotics, AI expert Laura Major as CEO of Motional
Underscoring Major's previous position as chief technology officer of Motional, the automaker highlighted her new role in accelerating the company's artificial intelligence technology capabilities ahead of the commercial launch of its autonomous driving service next year. Since Motional's establishment in 2020, Major has served as CTO and has been acting as the interim CEO since September.
Major previously led the team in charge of developing the Ioniq 5 robotaxi, one of the world's first driverless autonomous vehicles to receive US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards certification. She has also been instrumental in creating a machine learning-driven autonomous driving software stack.
Before joining Motional, Laura Major worked at Draper Laboratory, a US-based nonprofit research and development organization, and drone specialist Aria Insights, drone manufacturer in the US, focusing on developing autonomous and AI solutions for astronauts and national security.
She is also the co-author of the book 'What to Expect When You're Expecting Robots: The Future of Human-Robot Collaboration,' which explores the future of human and robot's coexistence.
'We are committed to working with Hyundai Motor Group to integrate 'Embodied AI' into transportation, delivering significant value to society,' stated Major. 'With our deep expertise in developing fully autonomous systems and our agility in rapidly implementing the latest AI technological innovations, we are dedicated to realizing a future where safe autonomous vehicles become a practical part of everyday life.'

NOC chairman announces Libya's first oil bidding round since 2007
Major oil companies vie for new Libyan onshore and offshore blocks. Photo via Reuters The Chairman of Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC), Masoud Suleiman, has confirmed that more than 37 international oil companies have expressed keen interest in the forthcoming oil licensing round scheduled for November, including major players such as the US-based Chevron, France's Total, and Italy's Eni. In an interview with Bloomberg published on Wednesday, Suleiman said: 'Virtually all international oil and gas firms are competing in the licensing round, which comprises 22 new onshore and offshore blocks.' This will be Libya's first licensing round since 2007. Suleiman disclosed further details, explaining that successful companies will be responsible for the costs of seismic surveys and other exploratory activities. These costs may be reimbursed should commercially viable quantities of hydrocarbons be discovered. He added that the NOC is awaiting approval of a $3 billion development budget aimed at increasing oil production to 1.6 million barrels per day within approximately one year. According to Suleiman, this budget will be allocated to develop companies such as Akakus, operator of the Sharara oil field, as well as other state-owned enterprises. He also noted that development of the North Jalu field would enable Waha Oil Company to raise its daily output by an additional 100,000 barrels. In a related development, Suleiman pointed out that the government has earmarked 20 billion Libyan dinars for fuel imports this year. However, he emphasised that this amount will not suffice to meet total domestic demand, which costs around $600 million per month. Consequently, the NOC may seek further funding. Libya and Turkey sign offshore energy deal
BY Libyan Express Jun 26, 2025 - 06:13 NOC and TPAO ink exploration agreement as tensions rise in eastern Mediterranean Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), paving the way for offshore oil and gas exploration in Libyan waters. The agreement was formalised in Istanbul by NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman and TPAO Director Ahmet Türkoğlu. According to a statement issued by the NOC, Turkish Petroleum will undertake extensive geological and geophysical studies across four offshore areas deemed to have strong exploration potential. As part of the MoU, a two-dimensional seismic survey will be conducted, covering an estimated 10,000 kilometres. The data collected will then be processed in detail, with the entire programme expected to be completed within nine months. The deal comes at a time of renewed maritime tensions between Libya and Greece. Just days earlier, Libya's Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) summoned the Greek ambassador, Nikolaos Garilidis, to protest what it described as Athens' 'unilateral actions' in contested maritime zones. The move followed an announcement by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis that naval vessels would be deployed to international waters off the Libyan coast. He described the operation as a 'precautionary measure' aimed at monitoring irregular migration, and claimed it would be carried out 'in coordination with Libyan authorities and other European forces'. 'Smugglers will not dictate who enters our country,' Mitsotakis stated. Both the GNU and Libya's rival eastern-based administration have issued strong objections to Greece's recent international tenders for hydrocarbon exploration south of Crete, arguing that parts of the designated areas fall within Libya's undelimited maritime jurisdiction and sovereign rights. The agreement between the NOC and TPAO is likely to add further complexity to already fraught regional maritime relations, particularly in the eastern Mediterranean, where longstanding disputes over energy rights and territorial waters persist.
