Safe Internet Campaign increases awareness of social media usage

The Sun26-04-2025
BUKIT MERTAJAM: The use of the internet and social media applications among children without supervision can invite negative impact, especially involving issues of safety, crime and social problems.
In this regard, society, in particular parents, needs to be given exposure and early education on the prudent use of the internet so as not to become victims of online scams, online gambling, cyberbullying as well as paedophilia.
Therefore, in raising awareness among the community, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) went to the ground to hold the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) in conjunction with the Penang-level Kita MADANI Carnival at Seberang Perai Tengah District Education Office (PPD) here today.
Through the 'pocket talk' session delivered by an MCMC representative, visitors were informed about the age limit for children under 13 to use social media applications under the supervision of parents or guardians.
Additionally, the MCMC shared about the effects and consequences of excessive use of social media applications among children, and subsequently provides tips or knowledge on using the internet safely and ethically.
A mother, Nor Ashikin Mohd Rosli, 31, said the commission's briefing session was very beneficial and opened the eyes of parents to be more aware of controlling their children's internet usage, especially social media applications.
'I do monitor and control the use of gadgets and internet usage of my eldest child who is six years old. If he wants to use the internet, I have to be there too, I don't let him do it alone. I allow him to use the handphone for at least an hour before bed, and even then, only to watch pre-uploaded shows. Even we adults can be affected by the internet or social media apps, let alone children, so I avoid it.
'Raising children now is more challenging as in the past, internet usage was not yet widespread,' the housewife told Bernama.
Another housewife, Shamshu Salina Mohd Ali, 44, also shares Nor Ashikin's view, adding that internet usage among children should be limited to educational purposes only.
'My child doesn't have gadgets and only accesses the internet using a computer. That's just to play Roblox. It's not just a game, but it greatly helps in my child's educational development, especially in mastering English, Mathematics and Science. But I limit it to three hours a day,' she said.
Meanwhile, Postal Forum, a self-regulatory body designated by the MCMC, also held a sharing session titled 'Be Aware of Your Rights (Post and Courier)'.
Postal Forum head Nur Hafizah Hanifah said the main functions of the body include representing the rights and interests of postal and courier service users, handling complaints, as well as providing feedback, and making recommendations to MCMC regarding the interests of postal and courier service users.
'We are not complaint resolvers but intermediaries between users and licensed courier companies under the MCMC. We also developed a code of practice for industry adjustment, and this Postal Services Code of Practice was approved by the MCMC on Dec 30, 2024.
'It was established as a guideline and reference for these companies regarding best practices to be used for the benefit of consumers,' she said.
She added that her organisation is currently intensifying advocacy activities and raising public awareness on matters related to consumer interests and rights, including parcel scams that use the names of courier service companies to deceive consumers.
More than 40 exhibitors, consisting of government and private agencies, participated in the Kita MADANI Carnival which was organised by the Penang Information Department. The event was also filled with various activities aimed at strengthening ties with the community.

Safe Internet Campaign enhances digital literacy among rural Sabah students

Fahmi (fourth left) with teachers and students at the Safe Internet Programme held at Sekolah Kebangsaan St Mary Kampung Limbahau in Papar on Wednesday. – Bernama photo PAPAR (July 23): A Safe Internet Campaign organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at SMK St Mary in Limbahau is helping to boost digital literacy and cyber safety awareness among rural students in Sabah. The initiative, under the Ministry of Communications, goes beyond improving internet access by promoting safe, ethical and responsible online behaviour, particularly among young people. Launched by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the programme included online safety awareness sessions, interactive activities and teacher training designed to instil strong values and resilience in students facing online threats. Form Three student Faradira Horatio, appointed as the school's K-DAT Captain Icon for the campaign, said such programmes should be expanded to other rural areas to ensure all students benefit from cybersecurity education. 'It teaches us to use the internet and social media responsibly, something many students tend to overlook,' she said, adding that she plans to actively raise awareness among her peers about cyberbullying and promote safe, responsible online behaviour. Form Four student Lee Yuh Hui said the campaign provided new insights on digital footprints and the risks of irresponsible internet use. 'Many students still lack awareness about safe digital practices. This campaign helps fill that gap,' she added. Form Five student Steve Noel said the initiative helped students distinguish between credible and false information online. In a statement, MCMC said the campaign reflects a whole-of-nation approach under the Malaysia MADANI framework, involving collaboration between schools, government agencies, parents and local authorities to deliver digital safety messages effectively. 'The internet is more than a communication tool, it's a platform to shape values, spread knowledge, and foster unity. Let's ensure this space remains safe, ethical, and constructive for future generations,' the statement said. Fahmi also joined students in an interactive session, advising them to remain vigilant about cyber threats. Also present were Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and MCMC Chief of State Affairs Bukhari Yahya.-Bernama

MCMC drafts online safety rules for social media, ad verification required

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is drafting subsidiary legislation under the Online Safety Act 2024, including an online safety code that will outline mandatory risk reduction measures for social media platforms. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said among the key areas being considered is the requirement for social media platforms to verify the identity of advertisers, in line with practices adopted in countries such as Singapore and Taiwan. "In Singapore, advertisers are now required to verify their identities before placing ads on social media platforms. In Taiwan, platforms must disclose who paid for and created the ad. "We are studying these measures and, if found effective, they will be included in the upcoming online safety code," she said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Teo was responding to a supplementary question from Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) on whether the government plans to amend existing laws to make it mandatory for social media platforms to filter advertisements and be held accountable for victims' losses. She said the urgent need for tighter regulation stems from the growing number of scam advertisements on social media, including those impersonating high-profile Malaysians. To date, MCMC has received 121 reports of scam ads impersonating well-known individuals, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Sultan of Pahang, the Sultan of Selangor, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, and former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz. "MCMC has also submitted 121 requests to Meta regarding advertisements impersonating high-profile individuals," she added. Teo said she herself has been a victim of scam advertisements. "Recently, Facebook ads falsely claimed that I am giving away 2,000 copies of the book Rich Dad Poor Dad for free. "I asked MCMC to report this to Meta, yet the ads continue to appear. Even after MCMC issued notices identifying the advertisements as scams, Meta continued to allow scammers to publish second, third and even sixth versions of the same ad," she said. Meanwhile, she said social media platforms removed 46,817 scam-related content pieces from January to July 15 this year, following requests by MCMC. The takedowns were based on public complaints and each platform's community guidelines, in line with local laws. "The number of scam content removals has seen a sharp year-on-year increase. In 2022, only 242 scam items were taken down. This rose significantly to 6,297 in 2023, and then surged to 63,652 last year."

Guan Eng told me to set up firm to move bribes, key witness businessman Gnanaraja tells court

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — The key prosecution witness in the Penang undersea tunnel corruption trial involving Lim Guan Eng told the Sessions Court today that his vehicle company was used as a conduit for bribery payments to the former chief minister. Businessman G. Gnanaraja, 44, testified that Lim had instructed him to set up a company, Bumi Muhibah Capital Holding Sdn Bhd, and open a bank account for it. The company was incorporated on Aug 10, 2016, and in August 2017, he used it to facilitate bribe payments to Lim. 'All instructions to establish the company and open the account were given by Lim while we were in a car en route to Publika on Aug 20, 2017. The company held a CIMB Bank account at the CIMB KLCC branch. 'I had full access to the account as I was the sole authorised individual to withdraw funds,' he said while reading his witness statement during the trial involving the Penang road and undersea tunnel project. The 37th prosecution witness added that he became acquainted with Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli, then Director of Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd (CZCSB), around May 2017. Between Aug 10 and 19, 2017, they communicated regarding Gnanaraja acting as the intermediary between Zarul Ahmad and Lim. Gnanaraja testified that Datuk Zarul selected him as an intermediary to deliver cash to Lim based on trust and the fact that he was not affiliated with any opposition party at the time. He further stated that during a meeting at Hotel Impiana in Ipoh on Aug 18, 2017, he and Zarul discussed a sum of RM2 million that Zarul intended to hand over to Lim. 'Later that day, around 5 pm, while I was at home, Datuk Zarul called and asked to meet him at Eastin Hotel, Petaling Jaya at 6 pm. Upon arrival, Datuk Zarul exited his vehicle, retrieved two dark-coloured bags and placed them in the boot of my car. 'I understood the bags contained cash as Datuk Zarul said '1M' while placing the first bag and '1M' again with the second. By '1M', I understood him to mean one million ringgit,' he said. Gnanaraja added that upon returning home, he opened both bags and found they contained bundles of RM100 banknotes. 'I did not count the bundles of cash. I confirm that both bags remained in my study and were not moved until I received a call from Datuk Zarul on Aug 20, 2017,' he said. Gnanaraja said, on that morning, he received a phone call from Zarul Ahmad instructing him to prepare one of the bags containing RM1 million and proceed to the vicinity of Hotel Wen Worth in Pudu to pick up Lim. 'When we reached there, Lim, dressed in the official white chief minister's attire bearing the Penang state crest, entered Datuk Zarul's car. I was wearing a batik shirt. 'Lim greeted us and exchanged pleasantries with both of us. He informed me that he had initially intended to arrange a meeting between me and an individual named Datuk Ewein, but chose instead to speak with me directly to discuss confidential financial matters intended for his benefit,' Gnanaraja testified. According to the amended first charge, Lim, 64, is accused, in his capacity as the then chief minister of Penang, of abusing his position to receive a bribe of RM3.3 million to assist a company owned by Zarul Ahmad in securing the Major Roads and Undersea Tunnel Construction Project in Penang, valued at RM6,341,383,702. The offence allegedly took place between January 2011 and August 2017 at the Chief Minister's Office in Penang. Under the amended second charge, Lim is accused of soliciting a 10 percent bribe out of the project's future profits from Zarul Ahmad for assisting his company in securing the same project. The solicitation allegedly took place near The Gardens Hotel, Lingkaran Syed Putra, Mid Valley City, between 12.30 am and 2.00 am in March 2011. Additionally, Lim faces two charges of disposing of a couple of state-owned lots of land in Penang, valued at RM208.8 million, to a developer linked to the undersea tunnel project. These offences were allegedly committed at the Penang Land and Mines Office, Komtar, on Feb 17, 2015, and March 22, 2017. The trial before Judge Azura Alwi resumes on Aug 19. — Bernama
