
TSB brand could disappear from high streets in £2.65bn Santander takeover deal
Sabadell, the Spanish owner of TSB, said last month it was considering a sale of the UK business amid efforts to stop itself being subject to a hostile takeover.
Santander said it 'intends to integrate TSB in the Santander Group' as part of the deal, which needs to be agreed at a shareholder vote.
The move would create the UK's third largest bank by the number of personal current accounts.
TSB runs around 175 branches across the UK and employs more than 5,000 people, while rival Santander runs 349 branches and has around 18,000 staff.
Both lenders have cut their number of sites in recent years as many customers have shifted to online banking.
The deal will raise fears of further job cuts and branch closures across the combined group.
In a presentation to analysts, Santander said it plans a 'rationalisation' of the overall branch network and structure, with aims to look at 'overlaps' involving properties.
It comes a decade after Sabadell bought TSB for £1.7 billion to gain a foothold in the UK, a year after Lloyds had spun off TSB in a stock market float.
In May, TSB saw first-quarter profits nearly double thanks to cost-cutting and improved mortgage lending ahead of April's stamp duty deadline.
Marc Armengol, TSB chief executive, said: 'TSB is a truly special bank, run by a first-class team that deliver trusted service and support for customers, day in and day out.
'Today's announcement represents the next exciting chapter for this successful business, as part of Santander, a highly regarded banking group.
'I believe this will prove to be an excellent fit for our loyal customers.'
Ana Botin, Banco Santander's executive chairwoman, said: 'The acquisition of TSB represents a continuing strategic commitment to our customers in the UK, offering a compelling opportunity that is financially attractive to our shareholders and aligned with Santander's long-term objectives.
'It strengthens our franchise in a core market through the acquisition of a low-risk and complementary business that adds to our diversification.'

Last year, a staggering 15.3 million international visitors flocked to the Balearics - a beautiful archipelago made up of Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca. The influx resulted in fed-up locals storming the streets en masse - waving banners demanding holidaymakers 'go home'. Arguing the rising demand of holiday rentals is pricing them out of the property market - and worsening the country's housing crisis - residents even took to squirting Brits with water pistols to get their message across. However, it seems the Mallorca Hotel Business Federation (FEHM) is pushing back on the island's anti-tourist landscape by launching a new campaign. The initiative, which aims to thank millions of tourists for visiting the island and raise awareness of the 'importance of tourism' to the economy, has seen around twenty billboards distributed throughout Mallorca, using positive and welcoming messages in English and German. According to local news site Majorca Daily Bulletin, Javier Vich, the president of the federation, said: "We cannot allow a radical minority to damage the work carried out over many years by so many people who have made tourism their way of life... Tourism cannot be the punching bag for all the structural problems of this community." Javier added that every month during the high season, a staggering 235,000 salaries are paid in sectors linked to tourism. This includes workers in the transport, catering, culture, leisure and hospitality sectors. The hotel boss went on to argue that Spain risks suffering a slowdown in bookings during the summer season, and more and more Brits flock to rival destinations like Greece and Turkey - which 'welcome tourists with a red carpet'. Even Morocco - which has long struggled to attract high levels of tourism, has seen its visitor numbers surge in recent months. "We must also be aware of their value," Javier warned. "Mallorca has been, is and must continue to be a hospitable land..." While the campaign may be well received by self-serving hotel bosses, that cash in on tourism, it's safe to say the news won't go down well with locals demanding change. And still - despite the alarming number of protests and graffiti that have been smeared across Spain - British expat Sandra Laurie, who has lived in Spain for nine years, says Brits should continue visiting Spain. "Local businesses, restaurants, and shops have built their success on welcoming tourists from all over the world," she exclusively told the Mirror earlier this year. "If you have a trip planned—don't let the headlines deter you. The Costa del Sol and other popular destinations are buzzing with life. The beaches are packed, the pueblos are alive with energy, and both locals and tourists are soaking up the sun, relaxing, and making the most of everything Spain has to offer." Of course, Sandra says being a 'respectful' visitor is key to being welcomed to the sunny country.

Arsenal transfer news: Viktor Gyokeres negotiations update as fifth summer signing leaked
Arsenal will soon add Viktor Gyokeres and Cristhian Mosquera to their list of summer signings after completing a £52million deal for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke Arsenal have now made four signings in the summer transfer window but are showing no signs of slowing down yet. The Gunners completed the capture of Noni Madueke from Chelsea on Friday afternoon. The England winger has signed for £52million – £48m up front, with a further £4m due in add-ons – and has penned a five-year contract. Madueke's arrival followed those of Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. And two more deals are expected to be completed soon, with Viktor Gyokeres and Cristhian Mosquera next on the production line at the Emirates Stadium. He has a €40million release clause. To paraphrase (Sporting president) Frederico Varandas – we're not asking for the value of the clause, but we're going to defend our interests.' Mosquera arrival leaked Clubs are very particular about how they announce signings, needing all of their ducks in a row before doing so. But an awkward error at the Gunners has denied them the chance to do so with Mosquera. A picture of Mosquera in an Arsenal kit was accidentally uploaded to Getty Images on Friday. It was swiftly deleted, but has stolen their thunder. The Spanish centre-back is joining for £13m plus add-ons and will be announced before Gyokeres. Mosquera has already spoken of his exit from Valencia, saying: "[I am] a little sad because [I have] been here [my] whole life, but decisions in football are like that. Now a new era begins." Arteta's Madueke win Madueke has become the latest Chelsea player to join Arsenal, making the move despite the growing unrest about the club's reliance on their London rivals. It has now emerged that Arteta has been pushing for Arsenal to sign him for some time, having first tried when he was playing for PSV Eindhoven.
