The UK has received its first sample of Moon rock in nearly 50 years, after China loaned a vial of lunar dust to Professor Mahesh Anand's lab in Milton Keynes.
The 60mg sample, locked inside a safe in a high-security facility, was collected by China's Chang'e 5 mission in 2020. It is the first lunar material to reach Earth since the Soviet Luna 24 mission in 1976.
'This is more precious than gold dust,' said Prof Anand, who is the only UK scientist granted access to the material.
The grains will be analysed using lasers and high-heat techniques to probe how the Moon formed and to unlock secrets of the early Earth.
'This is a great honour and a huge privilege,' said Prof Anand. 'Nobody in the world had access to China's samples.'
The UK joins a select group of seven international researchers chosen to study the rare material, in a move signalling growing scientific collaboration.
The Chinese mission drilled 2kg of lunar soil from Mons Rümker, a volcanic plateau, returning it in a capsule that landed in Inner Mongolia.
At the Open University's facility, extreme precautions are being taken to avoid contamination. Technicians wear gowns, gloves and hoods; sticky mats clean their shoes. Earthly particles could destroy the integrity of the results.
'This is high stakes,' said lab technician Kay Knight, who will be the first to work directly on the grains.
The analysis process involves vaporising the dust at 1,400°C and scanning it for carbon, nitrogen and noble gases. Other tests will determine its oxygen content using lasers.
The team has one year to complete the research, which may destroy the tiny sample in the process. But Prof Anand hopes this is just the beginning.
'I hope that this is the start of long-term collaboration between China and international scientists,' he said.
In 2024, China's Chang'e 6 mission brought back the first samples from the far side of the Moon, an area of growing interest for future research.

However, that investigation faced harsh criticism for lacking transparency and access, and for not seriously evaluating the lab-leak theory. Tedros launched another investigation, setting up the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO), comprising 27 international experts, in July 2021. Their 78-page report was published on Friday.

Researchers were able to develop a high-speed, reliable satellite internet connection capable of providing data transmission at 1Gbps, far surpassing the performance of current satellite services like Starlink. While Starlink satellites orbit around 341 miles above Earth, the Chinese team's satellite operates at an impressive 22,807 miles above the planet, achieving these speeds despite the increased distance. The implications of this technology extend beyond internet use on Earth. Its potential could transform communications for space missions and satellite navigation systems. Additionally, if this technology is successfully implemented, it may offer a more reliable internet service in remote areas, including places where traditional broadband is unavailable, providing an alternative to Starlink and other satellite providers. However, it is still in the experimental phase, with the findings published in Acta Optica Sinica as a proof of concept. If commercialised, it could challenge existing satellite internet services and lead to faster, more reliable connections for users around the globe.

AstraZeneca signs AI research deal with China's CSPC for chronic diseases

AstraZeneca has signed an AI-led research agreement with China's CSPC Pharmaceutical Group worth up to $5.3 billion, which would help the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker develop therapies for chronic conditions, it said on Friday. The deal marks the latest effort by AstraZeneca to revive its business in China, its second-biggest market, where it has faced several challenges including the arrest of its China president last year and potential fines related to imports. Under Friday's agreement, the two companies will collaborate to discover and develop pre-clinical candidates, including a small molecule oral therapy for immunological diseases, with CSPC conducting AI-driven research in Shijiazhuang City. 'This strategic research collaboration underscores our commitment to innovation to tackle chronic diseases which impact over two billion people globally,' AstraZeneca executive Sharon Barr said in a statement. Friday's agreement follows AstraZeneca's announcement in March that it will invest $2.5 billion in a R&D hub in Beijing, and it also marks further investment in AI following collaborations with Immunai, and Tempus AI. AstraZeneca will pay CSPC an upfront fee of $110 million. The Hong Kong-listed firm is also eligible to receive up to $1.62 billion for reaching development milestones and $3.6 billion linked to sales-related milestones, the groups said in separate statements. They signed a licensing deal last October in which AstraZeneca agreed to pay up to $1.92 billion to CSPC to develop a candidate which would boost its cardiovascular pipeline. AstraZeneca and CSPC both have wide-ranging pipeline portfolios, including cancer treatments and those targeting cardiovascular diseases. However, about 80% of CSPC's total revenue comes from its finished drug segment, according Morningstar analysts. The Chinese group said last month it was in negotiations with third parties on new licensing and collaboration. Friday's agreement also gives AstraZeneca the rights to exercise options for exclusive licenses for candidates identified as part of the collaboration.
