Malaysia Strengthens Regional Biodiversity Conservation With Nominations As ASEAN Heritage Site
The meeting was chaired by the Undersecretary of the Philippine Policy, Planning and International Affairs Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Jonas R. Leones as the Chairman of ACB GB and the Secretary of the Biodiversity and Forestry Management Division, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) S. Siva Kumar who is also the Deputy Chairman of ACB GB.
NRES in a statement announced that the meeting had decided to nominate three sites as AHPs, namely the Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve, Pahang; Bako National Park and Bukit Lambir National Park, Sarawak.
According to NRES, the meeting also agreed to nominate three new sites in Vietnam, namely Xuan Thuy National Park, Pu Mat National Park and Dong Nai Culture and Nature Reserve.
'In addition, the launch of 'Enhancing Conservation and Restoration of Wetlands and Peatlands in ASEAN' (EnCORE Wetlands) was officially introduced with Maludam National Park, Sarawak selected as Malaysia's pilot site along with Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in the Philippines.
'The meeting also welcomed the formulation of the ASEAN Biodiversity Plan (ABP) 2024–2030 which is aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF),' said NRES.
Today's ACB GB meeting was held to strengthen regional biodiversity initiatives and finalise preparations for ASEAN's participation in the COP 17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to be held in Yerevan, Armenia next year.
Among the main agendas of the meeting hosted by NRES is the coordination of an action plan for the development of an ASEAN Joint Statement (AJS) on biodiversity, which will reflect regional priorities and will be delivered by the Chairman ASEAN 2026 (Philippines) during the high-level segment at COP 17.
The AJS development process involves a series of consultations with ASEAN member states and is expected to be finalised by mid-2026.

JBPM Distributes 150 Community Boats Nationwide To Help Expedite Flood Rescue Ops
SEREMBAN, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has begun distributing 150 community boats, valued at RM1.8 million, nationwide to facilitate and expedite the rescue of flood victims at the early stage. Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the phased handing-over of the boats to eligible recipients began today. 'The bodies identified as eligible recipients include the Community and Volunteer Fire Brigade, Rukun Tetangga groups, Village Development and Security Committee, as well as the Federal Village Development and Security Committee and stations with a high number of flood rescue operations. 'The procurement of the new boats and accessories for community rescue was made through the allocation under the 2023 Third Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to facilitate the rescue process of local communities to safe locations,' she said. She told reporters this after officiating the Water Activity Safety Campaign programme in conjunction with the World Drowning Prevention Day, which was also attended by JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad here today. Aiman Athirah also said that Malaysia recorded an average of 1,359 deaths from drowning from 2020 to 2024, with an annual fatality average of 272. 'If analysed, the number of deaths from drowning is much higher than deaths due to fires. The high-risk age group - between 20 and 39 and between seven and 19 - recorded the highest number of fatalities, accounting for 36 per cent and 30 per cent of the total deaths, respectively,' she said. As such, she said appropriate prevention programmes need to be implemented, in addition to ensuring policy planning involving the participation of various sectors is carried out to reduce the risks of drowning incidents. Aiman Athirah said continuous efforts, like today's campaign, should be expanded not only to tourist areas but also to villages and rural areas near natural water resources, such as rivers and lakes.

The poem, titled 'Darah Yang Terpercik di Baju,' was more than just a recitation. For Staff Sergeant Siti Nur Aini Jasni, it was a heartfelt expression of duty and devotion - a pledge of loyalty spoken with love. A member of the ATM for over two decades, she delivered each line not just with voice, but with the weight of experience as a military personnel. Chosen for the third time to recite a poem in conjunction with Warriors' Day, Siti Nur Aini considers the opportunity a deeply meaningful honour, especially as she stands before rows of veterans who remain resolute, even as age begins to weigh on their bodies. 'When I see the veterans marching with such enthusiasm, despite their age and physical limitations, my heart aches,' she said. 'Their unwavering spirit breathes life into every verse I recite,' she added, referring to the poem written by the late Norazimah Abu Bakar. Having begun reciting poetry during her school days, the 40-year-old from Kulim, Kedah, said her passion for poetry has remained strong throughout her career in the military. Her dedication has earned her several accolades, including being crowned champion of the ATM 'Sayembara Deklamasi Puisi Kemerdekaan' 2023. However, Siti Nur Aini is quick to point out that it's not the awards that matter most, but how poetry can stir the hearts of the younger generation and remind them of the sacrifices made by the country's heroes. 'The verses that touches me most deeply are: 'selimut pejuang yang gugur perlahan dilepaskan' and 'dari liang pusara menyambut syahdu, resam terpercik darah di baju masih basah, bersemadi di kalbuku'.
