Charlie Allison, a 20-year old with a previous first-class best of just 28, hit a memorable maiden hundred to stun champions Surrey at the Oval.Allison's brilliant 140, in his sixth first-class match, helped Essex rack up a second innings total of 479 and leave Surrey with an unlikely victory target of 418. By stumps, in eight overs' batting, they reached 32 without loss.Surrey's six-pronged pace attack was neutered on an easing pitch, leaving Rory Burns's side facing a stiff final day battle for a draw to maintain their unbeaten start to the County Championship season.Towards the end of the innings, Colchester-born Allison hit a weary Dan Worrall for two sixes over long on and there were also 19 fours in a 235-ball epic spanning just over five hours.Allison, remarkably, had come in on a pair after being caught behind off New Zealand Test all-rounder Nathan Smith from his fifth ball in Essex's first innings. In nine previous first-class innings, since making his debut last month, he had made only 154 runs at an average of 17.11.But when he tucked his 185th ball to deep mid on and sauntered for a single, Allison was coolness personified as he initially hardly reacted to his achievement until removing his helmet and raising both arms in the air to acknowledge generous applause from the third day crowd.Noah Thain, his contemporary from Essex age groups and recent England U19 teams, gave Allison a bear hug and the pair then continued an impressive seventh wicket stand that eventually raised 116.Thain made 50 before holing out to long off and, earlier, Allison had helped Tom Westley – who fought hard for his own 50 – to blunt a Surrey attack already up against it after Paul Walter's superlative 118 on day two.Essex had resumed 133 ahead on 195-2, and Dean Elgar (64) could not believe it when he attempted to square drive a full ball angled across him by Worrall and succeeded only in slicing it all the way to third man where Smith took the catch.Allison was fortunate to get off the mark with an inside-edged four, the ball narrowly missing off stump as he tried to square cut a delivery from Worrall that was too close to him for the stroke. But the youngster settled his nerves by soon hitting Smith beautifully to the cover boundary, his second scoring shot, and then taking further fours off his pads against Jamie Overton and through extra cover off Tom Lawes.Overton even touched 88mph in a pacy spell in which he was always in the mid-80s, but Westley was equal to the challenge with fours through extra cover and tucked neatly off his pads. On 35, Westley survived a difficult low chance to Sam Curran, diving to his right, as he clipped Lawes off his legs but the Essex total had moved on to 266-3 by the time Surrey took the second new ball 20 minutes before lunch.Jordan Clark, nursing a sore toe, was brought on for his first bowl of the day immediately after lunch and, with his 10th ball, he had Westley athletically caught by Kurtis Patterson – diving to his right – at point. Worrall then pinned Matt Critchley leg-before for four, nine runs later, and at 294-5 it seemed as if Surrey were back in the game with almost five sessions remaining.Michael Pepper, however, hung around to make 18 in a 49-run stand with Allison, until Curran – finally thrown the ball for the 50th over of the day – struck with his seventh delivery to have Pepper caught behind. But Allison and Thain capped a brilliant day for Essex by staying together for almost two hours after Pepper's dismissal 45 minutes before tea. Allison finally miscued a swipe at Clark, giving a simple return catch as the last few Essex wickets fell in a flurry of slogs, but whatever he goes on to achieve in his cricket career he will never forget this day.ECB Reporters' Network supported by Rothesay

'Can't see any downsides' - your views on Walker-Peters

We asked for your views on Kyle Walker-Peters, who has joined the Hammers on a free. Here are some of your comments:Tom: Solid signing. With the departures of Vladimir Coufal and Aaron Cresswell, KWP will provide much needed cover in the full-back positions for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and new boy El Hadji Diouf. Joining on a free with Premier League experience? Even I think we needed some depth following Vladi's departure and Walker-Peters fits the bill. Good free Very happy. Will give good competition to Wan-Bissaka and Diouf and may even start a few while Diouf beds in. Hopefully being a freebie means there's a big-money midfielder and a big money forward on the Has to be a great signing. Gives us strength in depth in the back line and he is a proven Premiership player. Can't see any He is a Potter type of player and a good, versatile addition to the squad, particularly as a free Absolutely. It's clear we have depth to add with all the outgoings so can't argue with a Prem-calibre player on a free. Not only that but with two wing-backs at Afcon in the winter, we need the Definitely good business: proven Prem player and was Southampton's best player last term. Let's hope he performs like AWB!Bradderthehammer: Great free signing - in fact I'd have paid money for him. Saw him play us twice last season and he was the best player on the park in the second game. Now we need some legs in No cost except wages, good business, decent player and good back-up for Aaron Wan-Bisska.

Transfer news live: Rashford heading to Barcelona, Arsenal face Gyokeres twist, Liverpool's Ekitike interest

The summer transfer window rolls on as Premier League clubs and those around Europe look to add to their squads ahead of the 2025/26 season. Arsenal 's negotiations for Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres had stalled due to a difference in valuation and terms, though the Gunners are confident of completing a move they could face late competition from Manchester United who are considered a late push for the forward. Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze remains a target, but Arsenal are set to leave on their pre-season tour of Asia without completing the deal for a new striker. Man Utd continue to focus on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo and have now agreed a fee for the Brentford forward who will complete a medical. The club is now focused on outgoings as Marcus Rashford looks set for a loan move to Barcelona while Jadon Sancho is drawing interest from Juventus. Elsewhere, Liverpool are in advanced talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over Hugo Ekitike. The former Paris Saint-Germain player has a €100m (£86m) release clause and it is expected that Ekitike would want to make the switch to Anfield and that personal terms could be agreed with the 23-year-old. Newcastle are also interested in the forward but are prioritising keeping Alexander Isak on the books after the striker has received interest from clubs around Europa. Will Arsenal face Viktor Gyokeres twist? Arsenal are said to be closing in on a deal for Sporting forward Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners were expected to pay a fixed fee of £55m (€63.5m), while add-ons were still being finalised and could reach up to £8.6m (€10m). However, reports in Portugal say Manchester United have now made a bid for the striker roughly in the same ball park as Arsenals. Gyokeres is adamant he wants a move to the Emirates Stadium and has been pushing for it this summer but a late twist could see him joining up with his former boss Ruben Amorim instead. Mike Jones21 July 2025 07:28 Bryan Mbeumo to complete Manchester United medical Manchester United have almost got their deal for Bryan Mbeumo over the line. A £65m plus add ons bid for Mbeumo was accepted by Brentford and the forward will now undergo a medical before Ruben Amorim takes his squad to the USA for their pre-season tour. The 25-year-old winger is set to become United's third signing of the summer after the arrivals of forward Matheus Cunha and left-back Diego Leon. Mbeumo, who joined the Bees in 2019 from Troyes, will become Brentford's biggest ever sale. Mike Jones21 July 2025 07:21 Marcus Rashford heading to Barcelona Marcus Rashford is seemingly on the move to La Liga both figuratively and literally. Rashford posted a photo of himself on a private plane with the caption: 'Downtime' as rumours abound over an exit from Manchester United. The forward has interest from Barcelona and looks set to complete a year-long loan move with the Spanish giants who will have an option to buy included in the contract. Barcelona have allegedly agreed to cover all of Rashford's £375,000 per week wages and, though United prefer a permanent move, they have agreed to this deal. Mike Jones21 July 2025 07:15

Luke Littler narrowly misses out on World Matchplay Darts record after beating Ryan Searle in 16 MINUTES

LUKE LITTLER came close to breaking the World Matchplay average record as he blitzed Ryan Searle in just 16 MINUTES! The teen sensation won his first-ever clash on the Winter Gardens stage, smashing Heavy Metal 10-2 in Blackpool on Sunday. 2 Littler delivered an average of 108.92, just short of Phil Taylor's 114.99 - but after five legs was flying at 121.21 per three darts. He said: 'It's been an up and down season so far. World Cup didn't go to plan for me and Luke (Humphries), tough conditions. 'But now it's the Matchplay and you're battling it out with the best in the world.' Littler flew out of the blocks, ripping into a 5-0 lead in just SEVEN MINUTES and hitting five out of six shots on the doubles. It took Searle six legs to get a double on the board after The Nuke piled on the pressure including a 126 checkout but his finishing just dipped off slightly in the latter stages. Littler told Sky Sports: "I was well up for it tonight, I just wanted to get that win, get that winning feeling and I did it. "I'm so glad to get that win, get that winning feeling and I can't wait to come back. "I felt very comfortable, I have been practising so much. I've just been putting in hours and hours. I'm glad it's paid off. "All eyes are on me now, just take it game by game… I can't wait to get back on stage." Gary Anderson also put in a comprehensive showing to secure a 10-5 win over Luke Woodhouse. Anderson progresses to play Stephen Bunting, who scraped through with a 10-8 win against Ryan Joyce.
