Russell Martin's brutally honest Rangers reaction in full

The National13 hours ago
Rangers had been ahead at Fir Park at the interval through a James Tavernier header. But Motherwell dominated the second half with Emmanuel Longelo netting a late leveller.
Martin pulled no punches in his post-match interview on Sky Sports as he called out some of his players who wanted to "jog around and do what you want to do."
🗣️ 'When you just jog around, there's a big problem'
🗣️ 'Some of them have to drop their egos'
🗣️ Dessers 'only one we've had a bid for' & he works so hard

"We were lucky to get a point," he said, delivering his verdict on the result and performance. "Motherwell played great, we were nowhere near where we need to be and I'm extremely disappointed and hurt by that.
"They were braver than us, they were more aggressive than us.
"I have said to the players and been really honest with them and I'll be honest with you guys because it is what the supporters of this club deserve...
"There is a default at this football club and it is not one person's fault at all, the default is to revert to type when it is going really well everyone is all in, it is really good.
"When it is not going well you protect yourself a little bit and self-preservation stuff.
"You can't play for this club and enjoy the really good moments and then when it gets tough, 'Oh I'm not sure'.
"You have to be all in all the time. We had too many on the pitch today that wanted to do what they wanted to do.
"If you are playing with real intensity and courage in the position that we coach you in, no problem. When you just want to jog around and do what you want to do, there's a big problem.
"Some of them have to drop their ego.
"I will look at us tactically and accept my responsibility in it but today is not really tactical, it's a mentality problem.
"We got more than what we deserved, actually."
Quizzed on how to fix the mentality matter, he added: "Well, we work out who really wants to be all in and who doesn't. Lyall Cameron comes in, did great because he listens and wants to run really hard for the team.
"And I said to some of the guys in there, Cyriel is the only one we have actually had a bid for and interest in. And he comes on and he runs so hard, on Wednesday night and today.
"Some of them need to have a look at him and set that example.
"There will be people left behind, if they don't want to come, they will be left behind because they need to understand what playing for this football club will take and what it means and not just when it is having a nice time.
"The European games speak for themselves; they find a way to get up for it. Hopefully, it is down to a bit of information as well and then today the lethargy and all that stuff is not acceptable.
"I am surprised but I am more angry than surprised."

He continued: "There is no excuse. I know what we are coming into and I understand the fan frustration.
"We are only one game in and it is a work in progress but we need to work out quickly who really wants to listen, who will really fihgt, who will really run when the going gets tough.
"But Europe is not an excuse, this club demands to play in Europe. We have qualified for that so we are going to be playing in Europe a lot and we are going to have games after European games a lot and we have to manage them much better than today."
Touching on the possibility of the result leading to accelerated transfer business, he said: "We need some help for sure, I don't think that has changed also we need to maximise what we have in the building.
"We haven't had a huge amount of games, some of them played thier first 90 minutes on Wednesday but we have to work out quickly who really wants to play proeprly in the way that we want to."

Hibs kick off Scottish Premiership season

After Europa League agony, Dundee lie in wait on day one of SPFL campaign Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Let's go further than that, even – and assert that there is no conceivable scenario which involves Hibs suffering a heavy loss in their opening game of Scottish Premiership season 2025-26 this afternoon. Yes, they'll be tired after their European exertions. A problem they hope to wrestle with for a little while yet, anyway. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad David Gray will be hoping that a combination of ice baths, heat packs and intensive stretching has worked to good effect on his players, rendering even the physical toll taken by Thursday night's heart-breaking Europa League exit after extra time at Easter Road a minor concern. The psychological damage incurred might be a different matter altogether. But the cohesive, coherent and well-drilled Hibs side who kick off the new campaign bears almost no resemblance to the hastily-assembled collection of players thrown into the fray at this stage last season. Having proven their mettle by finishing third in the table from the most unpromising of starting positions, they're a forced to be reckoned with. Pressley in charge of Dundee So what should fans expect at Dens Park today? Certainly nothing resembling the 3-0 scudding they took in Paisley in round one of the league fixtures last time out. Let's take a look at how Hibs shape up for another campaign that promises to be as dramatic as ever. Expectations Finish third. Simple as that. Possibly win a cup along the way. And, although it's looking a lot tougher now, get into the league phase of European football for the first time. You don't ask for much, do you? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad In all seriousness, Hibs finished last season as quite clearly the third best team in Scotland. By all applicable criteria, they were best of the rest behind the big-spending big two – and should be expected to build on that platform. But the margins are fine. The potential for mayhem – VAR, crazy flashpoints, daft red cards and injuries that refuse to go away – is never far from the surface. And there are no guarantees. A lot is still going to depend on transfer business yet to be done. Or not. Gray knows his squad is not the finished article. Short of a defensive midfielder and a striker, he's been working to convince Scotland defender – and free agent - Grant Hanley that Hibs are a good option at this stage of his career. But could be about to lose Lewis Miller to Blackburn. Everyone has a plan. Until they get a punch in the face. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad How they get there It seems daft to focus on the importance of a fast start, given the distinctly indirect route taken by Hibs last season. If you'll recall, they were still rooted to the foot of the Scottish Premiership in early December; that was nobody's idea of a promising opening manoeuvre by the first-year head coach. No disrespect to anyone in Scotland's elite division but, even allowing for the potential strain of European football, Hibs do have a chance to get off to a flying start. After Dundee away, it's Kilmarnock at home. Falkirk away will be interesting enough, given the promotion bounce John McGlynn's team are likely to be enjoying. But it's winnable. As are home games against St Mirren and Dundee United - not to mention a Premier Sports Cup last-16 tie at Livingston. With Celtic, Hearts, Aberdeen and Rangers all to be faced in a daunting five-game stretch starting in late December, in fact, you could argue that a quick start is necessary. You wouldn't want to be hitting that run of fixtures without a decent points tally. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Key men A lot will depend on how £1 million-plus record signing Thibault Klidje fares, once he gets settled and adapted to the Scottish game. Kieron Bowie and Martin Boyle are a first-choice strike pairing who will take some shifting – but Klidje has been signed to play games and score goals. Gray has already done a lot of good work in persuading Rocky Bushiri and Junior Hoilett to extend their stays at Easter Road. Josh Mulligan also looks a good signing after a couple of competitive outings; today could be fun for the former Dundee man, as he returns to Dens for the first time since his summer move. Jamie McGrath already seems to be a key component for Hibs. Who are maybe one midfielder and one forward short of a full complement. Before they lose anyone. As was the case last season, anything Gray's men achieve this year will be a team effort. He's put a lot of faith in the group as a collective – and we shouldn't expect that to change. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Familiar faces in new environments So it's Steven Pressley's Dundee now, eh? And Derek McInnes is at Hearts. Stuart Kettlewell is at Killie while Davie Martindale is back. Plus there's another new Rangers manager … and just the one unfamiliar face at Motherwell in Jens Berthel Askou. You know what you're going to expect from most of your rivals every year in the Scottish Premiership, even if Russell Martin's early days at Ibrox might be a little hard to judge. It's not as if Jimmy Thelin's Aberdeen are going to be radically different from last season, right? The arrival of former Hearts great Pressley at Dens Park is probably one of the more interesting appointments of the summer. Made more fascinating by a distinctly wobbly start to his time as Dark Blues gaffer. Buckle up, then, for day one. The first chapter in a story that, as Hibs fans know, could go anywhere. Via all manner of madcap detours.

Michael Stewart in brutal Rangers transfer assessment as he can't make sense of the one that got away

Pundit Stewart has taken aim at Gers transfer dealings since Russell Martin's arrival at Ibrox Michael Stewart has been left unconvinced by Rangers recruitment policy this summer and has lambasted the club's transfer chiefs for not going all-out to sign Vaclav Cerny permanently. ‌ For the third season in a row, Gers failed to taste victory on the opening day of the Premiership campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw against Motherwell on Saturday. ‌ In the immediate aftermath of the game, Russell Martin tore into his new-look squad, accusing them of 'reverting to type' and vowing that those who can't reach his levels will be shown the door. ‌ His outburst came just days after the Light Blues booked their place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League by claiming a 3-1 aggregate victory against Panathinaikos. But according to ex Hearts and Hibs midfielder Stewart, the players at Martin's disposal don't have the ability to give him what he wants at Rangers. Speaking on Sportscene, he said: "If you want to play that open, expansive style, you have got to have everybody looking for the ball. "It's the same out of possession with everybody understanding where they are and are all active. There are too many players in the Rangers side that don't do that. "It's (about) the character as well. You look at the back-end of last season, Barry Ferguson and his coaching staff went on about the mentality every week. "But if you don't sign the right players with that intensity, then you are never going to get that style of performance. ‌ "You look at the players they have brought in so far, I am not convinced they have got that intensity in their game." Czech Republic international Cerny impressed by bagging 18 goals last season and Stewart has also questioned why the club didn't do more to bring the Wolfsburg winger back. ‌ He added: "This comes to the bigger picture about what you are trying to do with the team. "They had a fee and a deal in place to sign Vaclav Cerny. I appreciate that the management team structure wasn't in place but somebody in that club has got to recognise 'this is as good a guy as we are going to get'. He was already in the building. "Do the deal and sign him. Instead, you are left with Kieran Dowell playing wide right. That is just not going to work. "They are going to be signing at least four starting XI players for them to be competitive. And you are not convinced, with what they have done so far, that it is going to get them to that stage. "Mikey Moore will absolutely excite the supporters. But he is 17 years old. I go back to my point, they had Vaclav Cerny, 25-26-year old and already in the rhythm and the system. "Instead you have got a 17-year-old loanee who you are hanging a lot on his shoulders."

Your best bits of transfer stories and gossip from the world of Scottish football this Sunday morning: Antman Rangers deal is now close Rangers hope to conclude the signing of Finland internationalist Oliver Antman in the coming days after it emerged that a £3million deal for the Go Ahead Eagles winger has been agreed. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Ibrox boss Russell Martin wants further reinforcements across his squad, but particularly in the attacking wide areas, and 23-year-old Antman looks set to become Rangers' ninth signing of the transfer window. Oliver Antman is closing in on a move to Rangers. | Lehtikuva/AFP via Getty Images Martin refused to be drawn on Antman specifically after Saturday's disappointing 1-1 draw with Motherwell, but did say: 'We need some better players to help us, for sure. We need some players that we feel will do what we're asking them to do all the time.' Martin added to his attacking options earlier in the week with the loan signing of 17-year-old Mikey Moore from Tottenham Hotspur. Martin has say on Dessers Meanwhile, Martin has confirmed that Rangers have rejected a bid for their striker Cyriel Dessers. The Nigerian, who was the club's top goalscorer last season, came on as a late substitute against Motherwell and has been persistently linked with a move this summer. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Dessers was one of the only Rangers players to be namechecked positively by Martin after the draw at Fir Park and he could now start against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday after another largely ineffective No 9 performance from Danilo. Rangers have received a bid for Cyriel Dessers. | SNS Group 'Cyriel Dessers is the only guy in the building who's in the squad today that we've actually had a bid for,' said Martin. 'We turn it down, I chat to Cyriel, he's dealt with it brilliantly. He's not ready to start because he had an injury and he's trained late. 'Then he comes on for two games and runs like a beast and gets on with it because he's a good professional and a good human being and he doesn't want anyone to feel, if he does leave or stays, he doesn't want anyone to feel negatively about him. That's the way to behave properly. So he's a good example to some.' Edouard set to play in Spain Former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard is on the brink of sealing a move from Crystal Palace to Spanish LaLiga outfit Girona in a deal that could earn the Selhurst Park side up to £5.5m. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Edouard left Celtic four years ago for the English Premier League and last season was farmed out to Leicester City. He has no future in London and that led to some speculation that he could rejoin the Scottish champions and rekindle a working relationship with his ex-boss Brendan Rodgers, although the Northern Irishman poured cold water on that idea. Odsonne Edouard is set to sign for Girona. | Getty Images Quizzed on Edouard last month, Rodgers said: "There are lots of players linked with us. Odsonne hasn't been on my radar, to be fair. I obviously know him, but it's about a player who will fit into the structure of the team." Now he is set to play in Spain with Girona, who have former Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski amongst their forward options. Hibs defender latest Hibs remain in talks with Scotland centre-half Grant Hanley as they look to reinforce their defensive options for the season ahead. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hanley, 33, has been capped 62 times by Scotland and is a free agent after leaving Birmingham City last summer. He attended Hibs' 2-1 Europa League defeat by Midtjylland on Thursday night and is a former international teammate of the club's current technical performance manager. Grant Hanley takes in Hibs' match with Midtjylland alongside David Marshall. | SNS Group Hibs' need to bring in another right-sided defender is heightened due to Australia internationalist Lewis Miller being in advanced discussions with English Championship side Blackburn Rovers. A transfer in the region of £1m is expected to be concluded imminently. Hibs are in action on Sunday afternoon when they kick off their Premiership campaign away to Dundee. Hearts want duo before kick-off Hearts still hope to have the transfers if either Pierre Landry Kabore or Tomas Bent Magnusson completed in time ahead of Monday's Premiership curtain-raiser against Aberdeen. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Jambos have agreed a fee with FK Trans Narva for Burkina Faso internationalist Kabore, who can play out wide or up front, but are awaiting a work permit being granted by the home office. They have also concluded negotiations with Valur for Icelandic midfielder Magnusson and are waiting on all paperwork being signed off. Hearts head coach Derek McInnes. | SNS Group Hearts head coach Derek McInnes would like to have both available to him for the visit of the Dons, but admitted earlier in the week that the matter remains in the hands of other officials. Hearts also hope to offload some fringe players before the transfer window is out and are actively working on deals. Another suitor for Miller Torino have become the latest Italian Serie A club to be credited with an interest in Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller, joining Bologna and Udinese in the hunt for the 18-year-old's signature. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Scotland internationalist appears set to leave Fir Park this month, although his final destination remains unclear. Miller did not feature on Saturday against Rangers, but his head coach Jens Berthel Askou says he is not too far away from first-team action. "He's been working really hard with the staff to get ready for this game,' Askou said. "Unfortunately, he didn't make it.
