Workshop sensitizes police on handling child rape cases

The initiative—jointly organised by the Lucknow Police Commissionerate, Chetna NGO, and HCL Foundation—aimed to foster a more empathetic and child-friendly approach among the police.
The training saw participation from 250 traffic police personnel and 50 officers from the Crime Against Women wing. It was conducted under the guidance of the Police Commissioner and direct supervision of DCP (Traffic) Kamlesh Kumar Dixit.
The workshop featured interactive sessions led by Sanjay Gupta, Director of Childhood Enhancement through Training and Action (CHETNA), who moderated discussions on child protection policies and shared ground-level experiences. Representatives from the Chief Medical Officer's office, media, and traffic police also took part. Sanjay Gupta emphasised that whenever officers encounter children in distress they must inform Childline by dialling 1098.

On the occasion, a special display of the "Nanhé Parindé" mobile van was presented, and 20 children participated to share their real-life experiences. A child-composed song on the POCSO Act, supported by Chetna NGO, was also released during the event.
Dr Jyoti Kamle, Deputy CMO of the District Main Hospital, explained the govt's SOPs for handling child sexual assault cases.
DCP (Traffic) Kamlesh Kumar Dixit highlighted how traffic personnel are often the first to come across vulnerable children—whether begging or working in exploitative conditions—and how such training helps officers act more effectively and humanely.
Joint Commissioner of Police Babloo Kumar advised traffic officers to make the most of non-peak hours by interacting with children found working in shops.

1 2 Bhubaneswar: In the wake of a college student's self-immolation in Balasore over alleged sexual harassment by her head of department, state govt has urged universities and colleges to intensify awareness about the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, or POSH Act and measures to lodge complaints. Universities have started holding meetings, workshops and seminars to sensitise students, staff and other stakeholders to create safe campuses for women. While some of them have already conducted sensitisation programmes, others plan to carry out such activities. Utkal University on Friday conducted a seminar-cum-workshop on the POSH Act to raise awareness about workplace rights while promoting a safer, gender-sensitive environment within the academic space. Jointly hosted by the internal complaints committee (ICC) and the Post Graduate Council, experts explained the institutional framework and responsibilities of the ICC in handling harassment cases. They emphasised the importance of timely redressal and institutional support for complainants. Three private schools sealed in Mau dist; authorities to prosecute their managers
1 2 Varanasi: In a crackdown on unauthorized schools, the basic education officer has ordered the closure of three private schools in Mau district. Authorities are now gearing up to prosecute the school managers for putting children's education and safety at risk Talking to TOI on Sunday, Mau DM Pravin Kumar Mishra said, "Under the ongoing statewide drive launched on the directive of the UP govt to find schools operating without recognition, the BEO has engaged his teams in each block. During the inspection in the Badraw block, the BSE's team found three schools within a 500-metre radius that were operating without proper accreditation and against standards." All these schools were closed immediately, and orders were issued to shift their students to state-run schools or other recognised schools. "We are also appealing to unrecognised schools to come forward and seek necessary recognition to avoid action," said the DM. Providing details of Saturday's action, BSE Santosh Kumar Upadhyaya said, "We found three schools, including Unique Kids School in Bhapoura, which was functioning with only two rooms and was immediately shut down. Chilton Public School had recognition for only grades 1 to 5, but was running classes up to grade 8 without nod. As per the prescribed norms, only trained graduates or those who passed the CTET can teach, said the BSE, adding that untrained teachers were found in some schools. At Unique Kids, some female teachers were using sticks while teaching, which is against the right to a safe and positive learning environment for children. After ensuring action against these three schools, officials mentioned that the students would be admitted to local or accredited schools where standards are met. The block education officer has been instructed to collect the school registers, contact the parents, and ensure the students' admissions.

Hyderabad: The long-drawn trail of one of India's most dangerous Maoist leaders, Takkalapalli Vasudeva Rao, alias Ashanna, has reignited after his wife, Sri Vidya, was arrested by Telangana police in Hyderabad on July 24. A senior cadre of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), Sri Vidya's arrest has turned the spotlight back on Ashanna—a top strategist and executioner in the Maoist insurgency who has eluded capture for over three decades. According to intelligence sources, Ashanna, also called Rupesh, is now believed to be operating from the dense Abujhmadh forests in Chhattisgarh, continuing to direct lethal guerrilla operations across central India. His reputation as a master tactician and bomb-maker is matched only by his ability to vanish into the forested terrain, evading even the most sophisticated security crackdowns. A decade later, he was inducted into the CPI (Maoist) central committee. Intelligence sources suspect that he may have been elevated as a Central Committee member. However, Ashanna, in an interview said he is in-charge of the North-West Sub-Zonal Committee of Dandakaranya of CPI (Maoist). Fluent in Telugu, Hindi, and Gondi, Ashanna carries an AK-47 and a ₹20 lakh bounty declared by the Telangana govt. High-profile killings Ashanna's name comes to mind in some of the most audacious and politically destabilising Maoist strikes. He masterminded the 2000 landmine attack that killed then Andhra Pradesh home minister A Madhava Reddy, and the daylight gunning down of IPS officer KS Umesh Chandra in Hyderabad in 1999. His sensational strike came in 2003—a failed assassination attempt on then chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at Alipiri ghat road, near Tirupati, using claymore mines. Though Naidu survived, the attack marked a turning point in the state's anti-Naxal policy. Ashanna was also linked to multiple assassination attempts on ex-CM N Janardhan Reddy in 2003 and 2007. In the latter attack, three aides were killed. Forensics pointed to his trademark use of remote-detonated landmines. He is suspected of involvement in the 2019 IED blast in Gadchiroli that killed 15 Maharashtra policemen and had even allegedly camped in Delhi to plot a high-level assassination before escaping a police raid. Ashanna has also served as a military trainer at the Buniyadi Communist Training School in Dandakaranya. His instruction in explosives, intelligence gathering, and ambush tactics have shaped many of the CPI (Maoist)'s current operatives. He also headed the group's military intelligence unit, guiding operations across Telangana, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh. Despite nearly being captured in Mahbubnagar in 2010 and false reports of his death in 2018, Ashanna remains India's most wanted Maoist figure. A tactical opening? In a joint operation by the Special Intelligence Bureau and Miyapur police, Sri Vidya was arrested from a rented house in Hafeezpet, Hyderabad. A senior member of the Dandakaranya state committee, she too carried a ₹20 lakh reward. Maoist literature and a laptop were seized, but no solid intelligence on Ashanna has surfaced yet. "We believe he may now go deeper into the forests or shift entirely," said an officer. Still, security forces are hopeful the arrest might offer the breakthrough they've sought for over three decades. However, in a recent interview to the media, Ashanna has put forth truce proposal and a ceasefire to govt following the Kagar encounter killings.
