Jewelry sales outperform as U.S. spending for most luxury goods falters, Citi report finds

NBC News5 days ago
Luxury retail was expected to stage a turnaround in 2025 after a promising fourth quarter marked by holiday shopping and post-election euphoria. Instead, U.S. credit card spending on luxury goods fell during the first five months of the year compared with the same period in 2024, according to data from Citigroup.
For the month of May, luxury spending held up better than expected, dipping 1.7% year over year, compared with a 6.8% decline in April and 8.5% in March. Combined spend for the top luxury brands, such as Hermès, even eked out a 0.2% uptick on an annual basis, according to Citi's analysis of a subset of transactions by the bank's 10 million-plus U.S. cardholders.
However, these gains aren't equally distributed. Jewelry has proven to be a bright spot, consistently outperforming other categories like leather goods and ready-to-wear.
Monthly spend on luxury jewelry has increased on an annual basis each month since September, according to Citi. In May, total luxury jewelry spend surged 10.1% year over year.
What's more, while other categories were buoyed by increases in average spend by customer, jewelry was the only product type to also see an increase in individual customers. Within the jewelry category, however, a cohort of high-end brands lost 2.7% of customers, but those who remained spent 11.7% more on average.
Citi analyst Thomas Chauvet told CNBC that sales have likely been buoyed by the perception of jewelry as investment pieces. Jewelry can also carry more sentimental value, he said, as a gift or to commemorate a life milestone.
'When you have $3,000 to spend on luxury, you know, are you going to buy a piece of jewelry or a handbag for the same price?' he said. 'Perhaps the piece of jewelry gives you superior intrinsic value given the precious metals content and superior emotional value and meaning.'
Chauvet added that the recent run-up in gold prices provides further justification.
'It is probably sensible to buy a Cartier bracelet now, given they have increased prices by less than 5% since the beginning of 2025, when gold prices have appreciated by over 25%,' he said.
Handbag brands, on the other hand, have steadily increased prices as much as 30% to 40% since the pandemic without the consumer getting more bang for their buck, he said.
'Handbags have offered limited newness,' Chauvet said, with the caveat that a few fall and winter 2025 collections showed some promise. 'In the last five years, from brand A to brand B, most bags shapes and styles are very difficult to differentiate from one another.'
Luxury watch spending has seen some gains this year, but less consistently than that of jewelry. Across all luxury watch brands, spending increased 14.7% compared with May 2024. However, results for the top watch brands fell 10% in May on an annual basis.
While surges in Swiss watch exports have made headlines, Chauvet said it was largely driven by retailers stocking up and watch manufacturers rushing product to U.S. subsidiaries in reaction to President Donald Trump 's threatened 31% tariff on Swiss goods.
The spending uptick in May may reflect an uplift in consumer sentiment but not necessarily a turning point for high-end shoppers, according to Chauvet. While equity markets have rebounded, the U.S. dollar is down about 10% year to date.
'We know the U.S. consumer feels better about life when the dollar is strong,' he said. 'One example of that in luxury is your ability to travel and to spend abroad on luxury is augmented by a strong dollar.'
Other potential threats to consumer spending loom large. The 90-day pause in Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs is less than two weeks from expiring, and the Iran-Israel conflict has roiled oil prices, Chauvet noted.

F1 at Silverstone and the £16bn industry that is 'part of Brand Britain'

There's a lot more to the massive motorsport industry in the UK than just the F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with the sector worth billions to the economy In Britain, Formula 1 is more than just a sport. It serves as both the pinnacle of motorsport while also sitting at the peak of a £16billion industry which contributes significantly to the economy. That's according to the findings of the Motorsport Industry Association's latest review, published in the build-up to Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone. That 16bn figure was the sales turnover from the motorsport and engineering services sector in 2023 – a £7bn increase compared to 2012 – with 50,000 people now employed by the industry. ‌ A big driver in that growth is, of course, Formula 1. It is a global sport with only one race out of 24 held in Britain, but 10 of the 11 teams that will take to the grid next year are either wholly or partially based in 'Motorsport Valley' – the nickname for the midlands and Oxfordshire where most of those facilities happen to be, with the exception of McLaren who are based further south in Woking, Surrey. Red Bull's sister team Racing Bulls is based in Faenza, Italy, but has moved more of its operations to Milton Keynes. Sauber is Swiss but recently opened a new facility at Bicester Heritage, while new entrant Cadillac will retain its current Silverstone premises even when its new headquarters in Fishers, Indiana, are completed. Ferrari are the only team, currently, without any UK base. F1 is a massive draw for some of the best engineering talent in the world. Some 6,000 people in the UK are directly employed in the sport while around 41,000 more jobs are linked to it, through suppliers. And there is also a prestige element, given the sport's newfound global popularity with millions of new fans having been attracted in recent years. To the point that, ahead of this weekend's Silverstone race, several drivers, team bosses and F1 chief Stefano Domenicali went to Downing Street for a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It was primarily to mark the 75th year of the F1 World championship, which began in 1950 with a race at Silverstone. But while the sport had previously tried to ignore interfering governments as much as possible, the current leadership has acknowledged the need to embrace and work with politicians to form a mutually beneficial relationship. ‌ So bosses will have been pleased to hear Starmer say at that meeting: "As Prime Minister, I'm really proud of what F1 does for our country – not just that technology, not just that innovation, not just the money into our economy and the sheer joy it gives to so many people, but the soft power and global reputation that it gives the United Kingdom. And this is really important. It's part of Brand Britain." Motorsport Industry Association chief executive Chris Aylett was at that Downing Street event and said: "It was positive to hear the Prime Minister congratulate Formula 1 and the motorsport industry on the 75th anniversary of the first Formula 1 race. "Stefano Domenicali was equally positive about the contribution to the Formula 1 story that is made by the UK's motorsport supply chain and teams who are located here. A great event to capture the imagination of our new customers and fans."

UK's biggest energy supplier is ‘on verge of splitting from tech arm' in £10billion demerger

OCTOPUS Energy Group has sparked a £10 billion pound demerger from tech arm Kraken. The UK's biggest energy supplier is planning to separate from its technology arm Kraken with plans to hire bankers to oversee the deal. It is expected that the demerger will take place in the next year and would see existing investors given shares in the newly independent Kraken firm. A minority stake in Kraken of up to 20% is expected to be sold to external shareholders. One banking source told Sky News that Kraken could be valued at as much as £10.25bn. It has now been revealed that Octopus is looking to hire bankers to oversee the demerger with Citi, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Stanley Morgan invited to pitch for the demerger mandate. Kraken is an operating system which is licensed to other energy providers and water companies. Octopus Energy has around 7.5 million retail customers in Britain and a further 2. million outside the Britain, in January it announced that it was the country's biggest supplier. The firm passed British Gas with a 24% market share. The £10 billion valuation of Kraken would reportedly suggest that the whole group, including the retail supply business was worth around £15 billion. 1
