Soaked Scheffler battles elements to make solid British Open start

World number one Scottie Scheffler blamed wild weather conditions for his wayward driving, but the American still shot a three-under-par first round at the British Open to sit one shot off the lead on Thursday. Scheffler, playing alongside former Claret Jug winners Shane Lowry and Collin Morikawa, got caught in torrential rain midway through his opening round at Royal Portrush. Scheffler only hit three fairways off the tee, but as the skies cleared, he produced two stunning approach shots to birdie the 16th and 17th and card a 68 to remain well in contention for his first British Open victory. "When it's raining sideways, it's actually, believe it or not, not that easy to get the ball in the fairway. Thank you guys all for pointing that out," Scheffler told reporters. "Really only had one swing I wasn't too happy with on maybe the second hole, but outside of that, I felt like I hit a lot of good tee shots, hit the ball really solid, so definitely a good bit of confidence for the next couple rounds." Scheffler made headlines on the eve of the tournament when he said his life was "not a fulfilling" one despite his status at the top of the sport. The 29-year-old said the "euphoric feeling" from winning a golf tournament lasts barely a few minutes before he moves onto his next target. Scheffler said he has received nothing but support from the rest of the field over his comments. "At times I feel like maybe I should be a little less honest. Maybe I shouldn't have said the stuff I said yesterday because now I'm going to get asked about it more," he added. "But really it's just a matter of perspective, and I've had some players come up to me and say that they feel and think the same things. "If anybody has disagreed with me, they haven't said it to my face." kca/mw

A lot is happening at Brentford - how are you feeling?

If you don't mind us saying so, it feels like you Brentford fans are having a strange summer. The Bees have received some investment - as this page reported earlier in the week - which should, in theory, help improve the squad. Naturally, there's the small matter of the club's charismatic manager leaving, which was far from ideal. The loss of the captain wasn't great either. And, in some respects, is this image below perhaps a scenario that represented a worst nightmare back in May? Forgive us for using an image of our own site but you can see where we are going with this. A lot is going on at the Gtech - it's a lot to digest and the future seems blurry. So please, in detail, tell us what you think about things and how you're feeling. Send your thoughts here

Ons Jabeur, battling injuries and unhappy on the court, taking a hiatus from women's tennis

Ons Jabeur is taking a hiatus from the women's tennis tour, with the three-time major runner-up saying Thursday she wants to 'rediscover the joy of simply living.' Once ranked No. 2 on the WTA Tour, Jabeur has battled injuries in recent years and has fallen to her current No. 71. The 30-year-old from Tunisia retired because of difficulty breathing during her first-round match at Wimbledon, where she reached the final in 2022 and 2023, and won't be playing as the hard-court swing begins. 'For the past two years, I've been pushing myself so hard, fighting through injuries and facing many other challenges,' Jabeur wrote on Instagram. "But deep down, I haven't felt truly happy on the court for some time now. 'Tennis is such a beautiful sport. But right now, I feel it's time to take a step back and finally put myself first: to breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living.' Jabeur also was the U.S. Open runner-up in 2022, becoming the first woman since Serena Williams in 2019 to reach the final at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows in the same year. She fell short of becoming the first African or Arab woman to win a Grand Slam title in the professional era, but she climbed to No. 2 in the WTA rankings the next week. She is 15-15 this year after her 2024 season was cut short by a shoulder injury, as she played just once after Wimbledon. Jabeur, popular with other players and fans, thanked the fans in her post. 'Even while I'm away from the court, I'll continue to stay close and connected in different ways, and share this journey with you all," she wrote. ___ AP tennis:
