2 varsity students among 3 fined for having porn on handphones
KOTA BHARU : Three men, including two university students, were fined between RM3,000 and RM4,000 in the magistrates' court here today after they pleaded guilty to possessing pornographic videos and images on June 18.
Al Azamuddin Al Fadzil, 22, and Syahmi Firas Jurij, 27, were fined RM4,000 each, while Hanafi Ibrahim, 47, was fined RM3,000 after pleading guilty to the charges read separately to them before magistrate Wan Izzat Wan Abdullah.
The trio were charged with possessing pornographic images and videos on their mobile phones at a house at Jalan Kemumin in Kampung Pulau Belacan, Panchor, here at 1.15am on June 18.
They were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to three years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutors Nadzir Abdullah and Nur Haziqah Hassan prosecuted, while the accused were represented by lawyer Chong Yin Xin.
Earlier, Nadzir and Haziqah requested the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a lesson to society, considering the accused's immoral actions and violation of public norms.
However, Chong requested that her clients be given the minimum possible fine because they had repented and promised to change.
'My client Hanafi has a health problem and underwent brain surgery in 2016. He is currently supported by his sister, who is a person with disabilities and working in a restaurant.
'Al Azamuddin is a first-year university student, and Syahmi is a final-year university student. Their families are also present in court and have promised to guide them after this,' she said.

E-hailing firms Maxim, inDrive granted 3-month probation

(inDrive pic) PETALING JAYA : Russian-founded e-hailing firms inDrive and Maxim have been placed under a three-month probation period after successfully appealing the revocation of their operating licences. The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) said the two companies were ordered to take corrective measures to continue operating, particularly regarding e-hailing vehicle permits (EVPs). 'To meet this condition, Maxim and inDrive have improved their registration system to ensure all of their drivers have valid EVPs before they can start operating. 'Both companies have also given Apad 'view only' access to their data to make it easier to cross-check their data on EVPs,' it said in a statement. Apad said it conducted a random check on their drivers on July 11 and found that everything was in compliance. The agency and the road transport department had found the improvements made by the companies satisfactory, and agreed to place Maxim and inDrive under a three-month monitoring period, effective tomorrow. 'To ensure the continuous commitment of both operators, their representatives are required to turn up at the Apad headquarters every month throughout the monitoring period. 'These sessions are aimed at allowing Apad to conduct real-time monitoring, with random checks conducted on drivers via the inDrive and Maxim applications,' it said. In May, both firms were ordered to halt operations from July 24 after failing to comply with Apad's regulations introduced in 2019. In September 2022, the road transport department raided inDrive's Malaysian office and discovered that the firm was operating with an expired licence. In 2023, Maxim was also raided by Apad officers for allowing vehicles to operate without a valid permit.

Ismanira admits she didn't search area where son's body was found
Ismanira Abdul Manaf is charged with neglecting her son, Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, in a manner likely to cause him physical harm. PETALING JAYA : The mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin told the sessions court today she and her husband had searched every block and floor of Apartment Idaman in Damansara Damai for their missing son. Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30, admitted, however, that she did not check the garden area where the six-year-old autistic boy was later found dead in a stream. The garden is located just metres from Block R of the apartment block where the family resided. During cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Ismanira said she first searched for her son on all four floors of Blocks R, E, and S after Zayn went missing at about noon on Dec 5, 2023. She said her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, 30, later joined in and searched all 19 blocks of the apartment complex. The couple also went to several nearby premises, including Zayn's school, a petrol station, a fast-food restaurant, and Ismanira's workplace. Raja Zaizul challenged Ismanira on why she failed to search the area closest to their home. Raja Zaizul: Would you agree that all these places are farther from Block R compared with the garden? Ismanira: Agree. Raja Zaizul: So do you agree that you searched places far from home but not the area right beside Block R? Ismanira: By area, you mean the garden? Raja Zaizul: Yes. Ismanira: Agree. Ismanira and Zaim were charged last year with neglecting Zayn in a manner likely to cause him physical harm. The offence allegedly occurred at PJU Damansara Damai between noon on Dec 5, 2023, when the boy was said to have gone missing, and 9.55pm the following day, when his body was discovered in a stream near his home at Apartment Idaman. Zaim has since been acquitted, while Ismanira was ordered to enter her defence. Lawyers Haresh Mahadevan, Ramzani Idris and Lavanesh Haresh represented the accused. Raja Zaizul, Aqharie Durranie Aziz and Nur Sabrina Zubairi appeared for the prosecution. The trial before judge Syahliza Warnoh continues.

Govt mulls plan to remove criminal records for minor, non-violent cases

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry is mulling over a mechanism to allow individuals convicted of minor or non-violent offences to have their criminal records wiped clean after a set period, provided they do not reoffend. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was part of the proposed amendments to the Registration of Criminals and Undesirable Persons Act 1969, which was agreed upon in principle by the Cabinet on May 21. 'The proposed amendments include introducing a mechanism to allow individuals who have not committed any new offences within a set period (of time) to be considered as having 'no record' in the criminal registry. 'This will give these individuals a chance to rebuild their lives by seeking employment or continuing their studies,' he said in a written parliamentary reply. Saifuddin said the move was aimed at helping former convicts who had shown good behaviour to reintegrate into society without the stigma of a criminal record. He said the Registration of Criminals and Undesirable Persons Act gave the ministry the legal authority to register individuals convicted of offences listed in the First and Second Schedules of the Act into the criminal registry. Saifuddin said the government would consider views from all stakeholders through ongoing engagement sessions before tabling the amendments in Parliament.
