
The search for Kim Mitchell's beloved guitar, stolen after a gig in Hamilton 50 years ago
More than 50 years ago, on Jan. 11, 1975, the rock band Max Webster wrapped up a weeklong gig at Duffy's Rockpile Tavern on King Street East in Hamilton. They packed their gear into a van and stopped at a nearby restaurant for a bite before heading out of town.
But they made a classic error in judgment: they left the van unattended.

When they returned, two electric guitars, a bass and other belongings — including clothes and Christmas presents — were gone.
Insurance helped cover the loss. But one guitar — an orange 1963 Gretsch Nashville 6120 — had deep sentimental value and could never be replaced. It belonged to singer and guitarist Kim Mitchell, a cherished gift from his father.
'(My dad's) house was 11 grand at the time. The guitar was 700 (dollars). Do the math today and know that he really spent huge bucks for me,' Mitchell, now 73, is quoted as saying in the coffee-table book 'Max Webster: High Class,' by Bob Wegner.

Wegner — currently updating the book for a second printing — is hoping to solve the mystery of the missing guitar. Inspired by recent high-profile recoveries of long-lost instruments, he has launched a web-based campaign called
'Kim's Lost Guitar Project'
to try to track it down.
The effort is especially reminiscent of
Randy Bachman's lost and recovered instrument
— an orange Gretsch 6120 from 1957, six years older than Mitchell's. It was stolen from a Toronto hotel room in 1976, a year after Mitchell's instrument disappeared. Like Mitchell, Bachman received his Gretsch as a teenager, and it became part of his early sound and identity.

Vintage Gretsch 6120 guitars are highly prized by collectors, fetching from $5,000 to more than $20,000 depending on year and condition.
The Gretsch 6120 is one of the most iconic hollow-body electric guitars in history, closely associated with legendary guitarist Chet Atkins, who helped design the model in the mid-1950s. Atkins played one himself, as did rockabilly pioneers Eddie Cochran and Duane Eddy. Decades later, it became the signature guitar of Brian Setzer, frontman of the Stray Cats. George Harrison, during early Beatles years, played a Gretsch Country Gentleman — a cousin of the 6120 also part of the Chet Atkins line.
Bachman, famous for playing in The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, got his guitar back in July 2022 — thanks to a fan named William Long from British Columbia who recognized it online. Incredibly, Long used facial recognition technology on photos and videos to locate Bachman's guitar. In the same way a face is recognized by subtle features, he focused on nuances of wood grain and blemishes to make a positive ID.
The guitar had made its way to Japan, where it was played by a musician named Takeshi. Once verified by serial number as Bachman's guitar, a trade was arranged. He gave Takeshi an almost identical vintage Gretsch in exchange.

More recently, Paul McCartney's original violin-shaped Höfner bass was found after being missing for more than 50 years. An international search campaign called
'The Lost Bass Project'
led to its return in 2024.
Jimmy Page and Peter Frampton have also been reunited with stolen instruments in recent years.
Another guitar at the centre of a global search is the cherry-red Gibson ES-345 played by Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) in 'Back to the Future.' It vanished after filming in 1985, but this year, Gibson launched a 'Lost to the Future' campaign to locate it. No luck so far, but a documentary film is underway about the search.
One challenge in finding Mitchell's guitar is the serial number is not known.
'Kim doesn't remember it,' says Wegner, a musician and writer who grew up in Hamilton but now lives in Montreal. 'But there's a scratch on the back of the body and a cigarette burn on the headstock near the low E tuning key that would make the instrument stand out.'

The Mitchell Gretsch is also identifiable by double cutaways on the body — rather than the usual single cutaway on the 6120 — red felt around the mute switch, painted F-holes, and a horseshoe inlay on the headstock. Wegner has photos from the 1970s that could help confirm a match.
Maybe facial recognition-style software — like what was used in identifying Bachman's guitar — could verify a found instrument's identity. Software online can do this for free or at low cost.
Wegner says he's exploring the possibilities. Mitchell could not be reached for comment, but Wegner says he supports the lost guitar campaign.
Larry Feudo, president of the Hamilton Musicians' Guild Local 293 A F of M, says gear theft is a major problem for musicians. So much so, instruments with sentimental or high monetary value are often not taken on the road out of fear of losing them.
'Thefts happen all the time,' Feudo says. 'Guitars are regularly stolen out of vans. Thieves scope it out. Never leave your gear unattended.'
The Max Webster theft was written about at the time by Windsor Star rock writer John Laycock, who followed the band closely.
'Some of the stuff was covered by insurance, but that's not the point,' he wrote. 'A musician develops a special relationship with a guitar that's something like sex and something like family and something like best friends — and still a little different than all three. That's why a man's 'axe' is irreplaceable; each has its own personality which can't be duplicated.'

Max Webster, which broke up in 1981 with the launch of Mitchell's solo career, was known for their energetic performances of hard rock and whimsical lyrics.
They played during an era that was notable for bands being booked for an entire week at a club, rather than a single night as is typical today.
That was the way it worked at Duffy's, a storied, dingy basement bar at 59 King St. E. that featured Max Webster and even Rush in their early days. Duffy's went out of business in 1979, and the space reopened under new owners, first as a country music bar before returning to rock when it was known as Oliver's. That club lasted until 1997.
Duffy's Tavern on King Street East in Hamilton was a popular nightspot to hear live music in the 1970s.
Feudo says members of the famed Hamilton band Crowbar frequented the nightspot, including harmonica legend Richard Newell, who performed as 'King Biscuit Boy.'
Newell, who died in 2003, wrote or cowrote a song inspired by the venue called 'Blues for Duffy's Tavern,' found on his album 'Badly Bent: The Best of King Biscuit Boy.'
Maybe someday, someone will write a new song — about the return of a big orange guitar that used to ring out in a long-lost barroom on King Street.

Security guard pleads guilty in death of man restrained outside Milwaukee hotel
MILWAUKEE — The last of four hotel employees charged in connection with the death of D'Vontaye Mitchell, a Black man who was held face down outside a downtown Milwaukee hotel in 2024, has pleaded guilty. Former Hyatt Regency security guard Todd Erickson, 59, pleaded guilty on July 31 to felony murder. The plea, before Circuit Judge David Swanson, came just days before jury selection was expected to get underway in Erickson's Aug. 11 trial. The 43-year-old Mitchell died during a June 30, 2024, confrontation with security at the Hyatt, where he was pinned down to the ground for about nine minutes. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Mitchell's death was a homicide that was caused by "restraint asphyxia," a condition that develops when a person's body position prevents them from breathing. Erickson and three other men — Devin W. Johnson-Carson, Brandon LaDaniel Turner and Herbert T. Williamson — were initially charged with felony murder. Erickson and Turner were employed by the hotel as security guards; Williamson worked as a bell driver door attendant; and Johnson-Carson was a front desk agent. In Wisconsin, felony murder carries a maximum punishment of 15 years in prison. Court records show prosecutors haven't made a sentencing recommendation yet for Erickson. Swanson said in court he would "take into account" Erickson's willingness to take responsibility in the case at sentencing. Erickson remained free on bond, and will be sentenced Sept. 3 — the same day as the three other men charged in connection to Mitchell's death. A criminal complaint said Mitchell was outnumbered during the deadly encounter, in which the 43-year-old was repeatedly punched and hit with a broom after he was brought to his knees. Surveillance footage from the hotel showed Mitchell running through the lobby into the gift shop before entering a women's restroom. Turner is seen going into the same restroom, in which then he escorts Mitchell out. A struggle then ensued between Turner and Mitchell in the hotel's main lobby, according to the footage and criminal complaint. Turner tried to grab Mitchell, but Mitchell resisted, the footage showed. Once in the lobby, the men are seen in the footage pushing each other. It's there that Turner begins punching Mitchell, who is knocked to the floor. The incident draws the attention of a hotel guest, who intervenes to help Turner. According to the complaint, the hotel guest and Turner escorted and later dragged Mitchell outside — where a female Hyatt employee struck Mitchell in the legs with a broom. The complaint said Turner then punched Mitchell about six times and footage further showed Williamson and Johnson-Carter attempting to help Erickson and Turner force Mitchell down to his stomach. 'At some point, the individuals gained control of him and got him on his stomach," Milwaukee Police Detective Martin Saavedra testified at a preliminary hearing in August 2024. Once on his stomach, Mitchell is heard on a Facebook Live video captured by a bystander repeatedly saying "I'm sorry." Mitchell died after being restrained for roughly nine minutes by the men. Report: US sets another grim record for killings by police in 2024 Mitchell's death drew comparisons to other cases The incident garnered national attention — raising questions over the use of force — and drew immediate comparisons to George Floyd, an unarmed Black man who died in 2020 after a former Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck and back for more than nine minutes. Mitchell's death also sparked days of protests and demonstrations leading up to the Republican National Convention, which was held between July 15 and July 18, 2024, and hosted in Milwaukee. The case drew the attention of attorney Benjamin Crump, who has represented families across the country for personal injury and civil rights violations, including those of Floyd, Tyre Nichols, and Breonna Taylor. Crump, along with Milwaukee attorneys Will Sulton and B'Ivory Lamarr, negotiated a settlement between Mitchell's family and Aimbridge Hospitality, the third-party operator that manages the Hyatt. The Plano, Texas,-based company fired all four men after the criminal charges were handed down. Here's what has happened with the other defendants Turner, 35, of Milwaukee, reached a deal in March to plead guilty to felony as a party to a crime and cooperate with prosecutors. Prosecutors agreed to recommend probation for Turner in exchange for his testimony against any remaining defendants at trial. Also in March, Williamson, 53, of Milwaukee, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery, which is punishable by up to nine months in jail, plus a $10,000 fine. Johnson-Carson, 24, pleaded guilty that same month to misdemeanor battery in exchange for his cooperation and testimony. Prosecutors are recommending Johnson-Carson be given probation.

Piece by piece: Artist's puzzle-worthy paintings come to life at Newport Beach library
Kathy Kehoe Bambeck's artwork is an eclectic mix of mediums and themes — from holiday Christmas and spooky Halloween, to botanicals and birds. And she really has a thing for monarch butterflies. 'I fell in love with the monarch butterfly, so I was drawing a lot of that. And then during the pandemic I started reading about them,' said Bambeck, a Newport Beach resident. 'I was just fascinated with them and love drawing them... I actually heard Roger's Gardens locally has milkweed, the native milkweed, which is the best thing for the caterpillars. So I bought a little milkweed plant and I put it out on my little patio.' The longtime artist currently has an exhibit running through Aug. 22 at the Newport Beach Central Library Gallery, called 'Kathy Bambeck's Jigsaw Puzzle Art: Acrylic, Gouache, & Ink Paintings' — featuring 22 pieces on display from her collection of puzzle art. 'It's a fun exhibit,' Bambeck said. 'They did a nice job installing it, 22 originals, and there's a little display of some of my original sketches.' In 2016 Bambeck pursued the idea of licensing her artwork for merchandise. 'I got really sick with pneumonia and the doctor was going to put me in the hospital. I go, 'No, no, I can't,'' she said. She was able to stay home, but couldn't do much for six weeks. She said she liked the idea that putting artwork on products makes it affordable for everyday people. With time on her hands, she started researching art licensing and reached out to the president of a licensing company. 'I said, 'You know, I think my work would be really good for your company,'' she said. 'I sent him some pictures of a few things on my website and no response, and so I tried again and nothing. And then I tried again. I sent him some pictures of some bird images, paintings I had done that sold really well in my store. … And then I got an email back and he said, 'Well, you know, your birds are really intriguing. Could you do a piece with [birds]?' and he gave me some specs.' That piece was called 'Bucket Birds' and it's included in the exhibit. Not only is it found on jigsaw puzzles, but it's also now found on doormats and garden flags. Other artworks used in puzzles that are part of the exhibit are her haunted house-themed painting 'Haunted Haven,' 'Volleyball Beach,' 'Birdhouse Beach,' 'Beach Castle,' 'Butterfly Palette,' 'Butterfly Garden,' 'Butterfly Meadow,' 'Snowman's Surprise Guests,' 'Birdhouse Garden,' 'Birdbath Haven' and others. Her '4th of July Beach' includes bits of Laguna Beach, Corona del Mar, Newport Beach, the Balboa boardwalk, Catalina Island and festivities celebrating Independence Day. 'A Monarch's Life' documents the life of a monarch butterfly she nurtured from egg through caterpillar to cocoon and its release during the pandemic lockdown. She lives on the Balboa Peninsula and said there's not a lot of butterflies there, but after she put the milkweed plant on her patio, she saw a butterfly egg. 'Then I saw a caterpillar,' she said. 'I would take pictures of it and sketch it. … And I followed it from egg to caterpillar to cocoon. … And then it was born there and … the next day released it and [I] cried for an hour.' Her love for art started at a young age. 'When I was 5 years old, some of my earliest memories are waking up in Fullerton,' she said. 'I would have a sketch pad. And I remember my earliest days, just wanting to sketch things and write about them.' Newport Beach Central Library Cultural Arts Assistant Camille Escareal-Garcia processes all applications for the gallery exhibits and assists artists with installation. She said the Newport Beach Central Library Gallery is open to a wide variety of artworks in various mediums. The space is best suited for two-dimensional artwork — photography, painting, drawing, mixed media, textiles, etc. — though there are also display cases for smaller, three-dimensional pieces, she explained. 'This exhibit appeals to audiences of all ages thanks to the vibrant and jovial nature of Kathy Bambeck's work,' she said. 'Puzzle lovers will especially be drawn to these artworks as many of her pieces have been licensed on jigsaw puzzles by major puzzle manufacturers.'

A 4th man accused in a fatal dogpile outside a Milwaukee hotel pleads guilty to felony murder
The last of four Milwaukee hotel workers accused of killing a man by pinning him to the ground has pleaded guilty to being a party to felony murder. Former Hyatt Hotel security guard Todd Erickson entered the plea in connection with D'Vontaye Mitchell's death in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Thursday morning, online court records indicate. Erickson was set to go on trial on Aug. 11. He faces up to 15 years in prison when he's sentenced Sept. 3. His attorney, Kerri Cleghorn, didn't immediately return a voicemail left at her office. Erickson's plea moves a massive criminal case reminiscent of George Floyd's death a step closer to resolution. According to investigators, Mitchell ran into the Hyatt's lobby in June 2024 and went into the women's bathroom. Two women later told detectives that Mitchell tried to lock them in the bathroom. Security guard Brandon Turner pulled Mitchell out of the bathroom and together with a guest dragged him out of the lobby onto a hotel driveway. Turner, Erickson, bellhop Herbert Williamson and front desk worker Devin Johnson-Carson continued to struggle with Mitchell before taking him to the ground and piling on top of him, according to a criminal complaint. Hotel surveillance video shows Johnson-Carson holding Mitchell's legs while Erickson, Turner and Williamson held down his upper body. They kept him pinned for eight to nine minutes. By the time emergency responders arrived, Mitchell had stopped breathing. A medical examiner later determined that Mitchell was morbidly obese, suffered from heart disease, and had cocaine and methamphetamine in his system. The medical examiner concluded that he had suffocated and ruled his death a homicide. Attorneys for Mitchell's family have likened his death to the murder of Floyd, a Black man who died in 2020 after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for about nine minutes. Floyd's death sparked a national reckoning on racial relations. Mitchell was Black. Court records identify Erickson as white and Turner, Williamson and Johnson-Carson as Black. The four workers told investigators that Mitchell was strong and tried to bite Erickson, but they didn't mean to hurt him. Ambridge Hospitality, the company that manages the Hyatt, fired all four of them in July 2024. Turner, Williamson and Johnson-Carson were all charged with being a party to felony murder along with Erickson. Turner pleaded guilty to that count this past March. Williamson and Johnson-Carson both pleaded guilty to a reduced count of misdemeanor battery that same month. All three are set to be sentenced Sept. 3, the same day as Erickson.
