Treasury to manage rationalisation of RON95 subsidies now, says Rafizi

Economy minister Rafizi Ramli said his ministry has engaged with the Cabinet four times regarding the RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation plan.
PETALING JAYA : The decision on the RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation plan has been fully handed over to the finance ministry following a Cabinet decision, says economy minister Rafizi Ramli.
He said his ministry has engaged with the Cabinet four times regarding the matter and the current position is to await further updates from the finance ministry.
'The finance ministry will manage the entire process for RON95 subsidies after this.
'I think we should wait for their official announcement. It is best to get more details from the ministry,' Bernama reported him as saying after a forum in Kuala Lumpur today.
In March, finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan was reported as saying the mechanism for the targeted RON95 subsidy was still being fine-tuned.
He said the government did not want to make any premature announcements on its implementation and an announcement is expected after the first half of this year.

‘Every inch of Sabah will be defended': Anwar denies deal over disputed Sulawesi waters

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 — Sabah's rights will be protected in ongoing negotiations with Indonesia over the disputed Ambalat maritime zone, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar dismissed claims that he had ignored the state's sovereignty over the oil-rich region in the Sulawesi Sea and said any agreement must involve both the Sabah state government and the state legislative assembly. 'This is a border issue between two countries, and Indonesia is an ally. President Prabowo is my personal friend, a family friend. I want it to be a good relationship. 'We talked about Sulawesi, and I wanted Hajiji to hear for himself, and give his view. We will discuss perimeters, following maritime laws, following history. It must be approved by the state government and subsequently the state legislative assembly. 'We will negotiate it properly, without surrendering. This was all in the meeting, not just under-the-table talk,' he said here today. Anwar said the matter was recently raised in Parliament, where it was suggested the dispute had already been settled — a claim he denied. 'We will protect every inch of Sabah. I will defend this principle. I chose to answer this now because we are defending Sabah on behalf of the federal government,' he said. Located in the Sulawesi Sea off Sabah's east coast near Tawau, the Ambalat Block has long been claimed by both Malaysia and Indonesia, primarily due to its oil and gas potential. Tensions flared in the early 2000s when both countries issued overlapping exploration concessions — Indonesia to ENI and Unocal, and Malaysia, via Petronas, to Shell.

Anwar vows no cover-up in Zara Qairina death investigation

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vowed that no individual — regardless of rank or political ties — will be shielded from the investigation into the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Anwar slammed those making baseless allegations, particularly against high-profile figures, without evidence. 'Regardless of whether they are Datuk Seri or Tan Sri, we will investigate if there is proof. We are a country of laws, not slander. 'If someone is guilty, they will be punished. But do not throw baseless accusations just because they are the child of a minister or a relative of a deputy prime minister or deputy chief minister,' he said during the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 event here. Anwar confirmed that police had completed their investigation and submitted the full report to the Attorney General's Chambers. He said he had contacted Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure that the probe was carried out thoroughly and without interference. 'The IGP informed me that 60 individuals have already been called to give their statements,' he added. He emphasised that no one would be spared if found guilty but warned the public not to fabricate accusations against political figures or their families. Anwar also disclosed that the attorney general confirmed receiving the report on Monday. He urged Malaysians to avoid politicising the case. The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina at a religious boarding school in Papar has garnered national attention, with some — including family members — alleging a lack of transparency in the investigation. The case has triggered a wave of online claims, with some users linking political figures to the incident.
