Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues director George Armitage dies aged 82

The Guardian22-02-2025
George Armitage, director of 90s indie hits Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, as well as Hit Man, the 70s blaxploitation remake of Get Carter, has died aged 82. His former agency Gersh confirmed the news to Deadline.
Armitage started out in TV, working on the celebrated TV soap opera Peyton Place, then broke into features via Roger Corman's micro-budget studio New World in the late 1960s. He subsequently specialised in crime films: Grosse Pointe Blank, which starred John Cusack and Minnie Driver, was his biggest commercial hit, and his final directorial credit was the Elmore Leonard adaptation The Big Bounce in 2004.
Born in Connecticut in 1942, Armitage moved to California with his family in 1956, and got a job in the mailroom at 20th Century Fox. He quickly moved into production, and became an associate producer on Peyton Place in 1967. He was keen, however, to work on something more cutting edge, and after getting to know Corman was assigned a project with the concept: 'Everybody over thirty died.' Armitage wrote the script that became Corman's 1970 post-apocalyptic satire Gas! Or It Became Necessary to Destroy the World in Order to Save It.
Corman then gave him sexploitation thriller Private Duty Nurses to direct, and a year later he was asked to write and direct Hit Man, which Armitage said later he wasn't initially told was a reworking of the Michael Caine thriller. Armitage also said he was reluctant to make the film as a black director would have done it better, but agreed to direct it after Corman felt the leading actor, Bernie Casey, was too inexperienced to take the job on.
In 1976 Armitage wrote and directed action thriller Vigilante Force for Corman; it was about a group of mercenaries who take over a small town, and starred Kris Kristofferson and Jan-Michael Vincent. Aside from the 1979 TV movie Hot Rod, inspired by his teenage experiences in California, Armitage concentrated on writing for the next decade; his next opportunity to direct came via his former Corman compadre Jonathan Demme, who passed the Charles Willeford adaptation Miami Blues to him. Starring Alec Baldwin, Fred Ward and Jennifer Jason Leigh, Miami Blues was an indie hit and led to John Cusack, who had optioned Grosse Pointe Blank from writer Tom Jankiewicz, asking Armitage to direct.
Released in 1997, Grosse Pointe Blank starred Cusack as a psychologically troubled hitman who returns to his hometown and attends his high school reunion; Armitage later said he insisted on cutting the script, which Cusack and his collaborators Steve Pink and DV DeVincentis had rewritten, down to 100 pages, but his improvisatory directing style allowed the cast to restore much of it. Armitage followed it up with The Big Bounce, which starred Owen Wilson and Sara Foster; he said he was disappointed with the result after cuts were made in postproduction – as was Leonard, who called it the worst movie ever made. The Big Bounce was Armitage's final credit; he subsequently acted as an uncredited mentor and script doctor on other people's projects.
Armitage is survived by his son Brent Armitage, also a film-maker.

This horny book adaption's cast guarantees we'll all be obsessed with the film

A fresh casting announcement has absolutely thrilled fans and convinced me that the film in question could end up as one of the most popular and anticipated movies in years. It could also signal the early era of another rom-com giant, à la Richard Curtis, or the coming of a film about love with the power to impact pop culture like When Harry Met Sally or xx. I am, of course, talking about the announcement via Deadline of Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman to play the romantic leads in the movie adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's best-selling novel (and – I cannot stress this enough – actual BookTok sensation) The Love Hypothesis. For those who haven't been wrapped up in the quite astounding way TikTok has revived the publishing industry since lockdown, even garnering its own name for that corner of the social site, The Love Hypothesis was one of the platform's biggest breakout successes following the novel's formal publication in 2021. But what has now shifted this film up a notch in terms of anticipation is how the casting has seemingly leaned into the famous early inspirations of Hazelwood's book. And it's this which makes me confident everyone's obsession is about to go stratospheric. The Love Hypothesis follows PhD student Olive Smith (Reinhart), a rising star in Stanford University's biology department, who ends up in a classic fake dating situation with a hotshot professor, Adam Carlsen (Bateman). Everything kicks off when she does the totally normal thing of panic kissing him at the lab to convince her best friend she has a boyfriend. And he does the totally normal thing of agreeing afterwards to maintain the lie for… reasons. However, The Love Hypothesis actually began in 2018 as Head Over Feet, a piece of Star Wars fan fiction published online by Hazelwood, which was inspired by the 'Reylo' shipping many fans did between the characters of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and antagonist Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). This is a romance that actually almost bore fruit in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – and it's one that now has another fascinating link to The Love Hypothesis, for Bateman in the role of Adam is Rey actress Ridley's husband in real life. Although some were holding out for Driver to take on the role his character inspired, many are tickled pink by this meta casting move – 'I'm cackling' posts are littered across social media – whether it was deliberate or not. 'The concept of playing the love interest in fan fiction about your wife is kind of insane, I think Tom Bateman won in life,' tweeted Alysa, while @rejectedcarebear wrote on Reddit: 'This is actually the best part of the entire movie.' 'They had a chance and they took it for sure haha!' added another fan, while @pertifty shared: 'I love this timeline we are living. I wonder why she didn't want to play Olive if her husband is playing Adam??' (As many then explained, there is such a thing as too on the nose.) The excitement alone that's been drummed up by the casting announcement of two semi well-known actors – Reinhart made her name on Riverdale and Bateman appeared in Da Vinci's Demons as well as Sir Kenneth Branagh's star-studded Murder on the Orient Express – confirms this is a watershed moment for TikTok and cinema. Because now we've gone from mild interest that this adaptation is happening to fully seated for it. And Reinhart is a canny operator, fueling fan excitement with lots of fun posts about the film on – where else – but TikTok. Yes, there have been popular BookTok adaptations previously, such as Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue and Robinne Lee's The Idea of You. Both, co-incidentally, star Nicholas Galitzine and were made for Amazon's streaming service Prime Video. The Love Hypothesis is going a step further, being produced by Amazon MGM Studios. This suggests the company's confidence in the movie's cinematic success but also means its streaming home will likely end up being Prime Video too. Could this company be the next rom-com powerhouse, snapping up the major romance book titles that capture the zeitgeist? @lilireinhart Olive Smith 🩷 #thelovehypothesis ♬ Lover – Taylor Swift And let's not beat around the bush, The Love Hypothesis will be bigger than those previous films anyway because it's hornier – don't let the cartoon humans on the book's front cover fool you, Hazelwood likes a lot of detail in her sex scenes. Many audience members will be pulled in simply by curiosity over how that might look onscreen; let's call it the Fifty Shades of Grey factor. If The Love Hypothesis does well, there's also several other Hazelwood novels ripe for adaption – from Love on the Brain to Problematic Summer Romance and Deep End (for the uninitiated, that one will truly have you blushing). More Trending Hazelwood, a real-life former neuroscience professor has made a name for herself as a 'STEMinist' author thanks to her female characters often being in science and tech fields and academia, drawing upon her own experience. She's also an expert at the genre's tropes of pining and misunderstandings but puts them in modern workplace settings. This could easily be what the next wave of rom-coms looks like if they're inspired or directly drawn from the pen of Hazelwood. We'd be moving on from Richard Curtis's bumbling, British and sweary romances to Hazelwood's quirky, introverted and often American heroines. And I think the world of onscreen rom-coms is more than ready to embrace The Love Hypothesis as the start of its next phase. Got a story? Nicola Peltz 'excited' as she shares major career update amid family rift rumours

Nicola Peltz has shared her excitement over the latest project in her acting career, which comes after her last film role was met with pride from her mother-in-law Victoria Beckham Actor Nicola Peltz has confirmed the latest project in her career. She's expressed excitement over the opportunity, which is said to be giving her more experience behind the camera, as well as another starring role on screen. ‌ Nicola, 30, has appeared in several films over the years, including Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014). It was announced last week that she will star in thriller Pretty Ugly and also serve as an executive producer, with it understood to be the first time she's held that position on a film. ‌ It was reported just days ago that Nicola will star alongside Jazzy De Lisser and Mary Stuart Masterson in the "murder mystery". The film is said to be written and directed by Erica Dunton, who has previously worked on TV shows such as Ted Lasso, the Summer I Turned Pretty and Outer Banks. ‌ The news was shared by Deadline and the outlet said that the film, set in North Carolina, centres on a mother and daughter, played by Nicola's co-stars. Their relationship "unravels" with the return of a "provocative makeup influencer," played by Nicola, amid a murder in the area. Her co-star Mary, 59, whose previous credits include Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), posted about the project following the report about it. Her post on Instagram later prompted reaction from Nicola, who shared her excitement. ‌ Mary wrote yesterday: "I'm slow to post these things, but I am so proud to be a part of this film. I had a (rather intense) ball down in Wilmington, NC with the most amazing crew and cast under the truly inspiring direction of Erica Dunton." Further teasing over the upcoming film, Mary added: "I will have more to say and share about this magical experience later on… you are not going to believe what my movie daughter [Jazzy] and her new friend [Nicola] get up to…" ‌ Her co-star Nicola has since reacted. She wrote beside a pink heart emoji in the comments section this morning: "Mary you're so incredible I'm so excited for this." She also shared Mary's post on her Instagram Story earlier today. Nicola's last feature film appearance was in Lola (2024), which she also wrote and directed. The film, which marked her directorial debut, was released in February last year and she was supported by some of her in-laws at the launch. At the premiere in Los Angeles, she was seen cosying up to her mother-in-law Victoria Beckham, 51. Nicola's husband Brooklyn Beckham, 26, and his brother Cruz Beckham, 20, were also in attendance at the special occasion. ‌ Nicola and her mother-in-law were even seen dancing together at an apparent after-party as the Spice Girls ' Wannabe played. And ahead of the film's release, Victoria said she "could not be more proud" of her daughter-in-law. Her support suggested that she was on good terms with Nicola, following previous rumours of tension in their relationship. There's since been renewed speculation about the family, with it rumoured that there's now a rift between Brooklyn and his parents Victoria and David Beckham, 50. ‌ Brooklyn is said to have grown close to his in-laws and it's been claimed that he "doesn't really feel like he fits into" his own family. A source told the Mirror recently: "He just doesn't feel his family have treated Nicola well and now that he's grown so close to her family in the States, he doesn't really feel like he fits into the Beckham family right now." Despite ongoing speculation about their relationship with his parents, a source suggested to the Mirror last month that Brooklyn and Nicola were stronger than ever. They were described as a young couple "enjoying their lives together".

MasterChef bosses decide BBC show fate for coming years after show scandal

BBC bosses appear committed to MasterChef for the coming years despite the show scandal of recent weeks MasterChef is safe on the BBC until at least 2028, TV experts have insisted, despite it currently having a recipe for disaster. ‌ The hit cooking show has had several weeks of controversy with first Gregg Wallace and then co-host John Torode both being axed from the series following an independent report into their behaviour. ‌ Production company Banijay and the BBC have two series of the show completed and there have been many questions about if they will air. ‌ Industry website Deadline says the current contract with Banijay until 2028 will continue and bosses are keen to keep the show as it has a young audience they would struggle to capture with a newly launch show. A second source told the Mirror they are confident the MasterChef brand is here to stay "for the long term" on the BBC. Insiders also insist they will do everything they can to screen the competitions which have already taken place, one series with both Wallace and Torode and a celeb version with Torode and Grace Dent. ‌ 'Having a civilian MasterChef in the can is the absolute worst position for them to be in,' a senior producer source who used to work on the show told Deadline. Behind closed doors, the BBC is said to be balancing a number of factors: the welfare of those who made allegations, the expectations of chefs who competed in Season 21, and audience appetite for the cooking contest. They could also face legal challenges from competitors if the show does not air. The report also hit back at claims Torode was 'blindsided' with his sacking, as discussions are said to have been going on for weeks. ‌ The Times and other reports on Thursday night claimed Torode was fired after he used the 'N word'. Production company Banijay said on Tuesday that an investigation into his co-star Gregg Wallace's behaviour by firm Lewis Silkin had "substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against" John, 59. John however said in a statement: "I have no recollection of what I'm accused of.' It's now been suggested that John, who had co-hosted the cooking show since 2005, used the N-word twice. John is said to vehemently deny ever using the racial slur. Earlier this week John came forward as the person alleged to have used racist language, after the allegation was upheld in a report into John's colleague Gregg Wallace's behaviour. Deadline also discussed the possibility of new hosts for the show, with stand-in Grace Dent obviously in pole position for one slot. The show is filmed in Birmingham which would make drummer Alison Hammond a good fit. Food podcaster and comedian Ed Gamble has been a guest on the show or Matt Tebbutt from Saturday Kitchen were also described as the type of people who could star alongside Grace in possible new line ups.
