HLIB maintains 2025 GDP growth forecast at 4.0% amid global uncertainty

MALAYSIA released advance estimate for quarter two 2025 (2Q25) on 18th Jul, based primarily on two months of published production data (Apr and May) and estimates for Jun, to estimate the gross domestic product (GDP) by production sector.
'On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, GDP growth ticked up to +4.5% YoY, while on a quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) basis, Malaysia's economy rebounded by +1.0%,' said Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB). Actual 1Q25 GDP print will be released on 15th Aug 2025.
Services sector: +5.3% YoY. Growth was mainly driven by sustained growth across all sectors, particularly the wholesale & retail trade, transportation & storage, and business services sub-sectors.
Manufacturing sector: +3.8% YoY. Supported by continued expansion in production of electrical, electronic & optical products, vegetable and animal oils & fats and food processing products, as well as non-metallic mineral products, basic metal & fabricated metal products.
Construction sector: +11.0 YoY, anchored by sustained expansion across all segments, particularly in non-residential buildings and specialised construction activities.
Agriculture sector: +2.0% YoY. Growth was fuelled by increased production in palm oil, other agriculture and livestock sub-sectors, offsetting the contraction in the rubber sub-sector.
Mining and quarrying sector: -7.4% YoY. The steeper decline was primarily attributed to decline in production of natural gas, as well as crude oil & condensates due to plan closure for maintenance.
Mining and quarrying sector: -7.4% YoY. The steeper decline was primarily attributed to decline in production of natural gas, as well as crude oil & condensates due to plan closure for maintenance.
Domestic demand is expected to remain the key growth driver, underpinned by a healthy labour market and supportive government policy measures.
The continuous improvement in tourism activity and healthy investment pipelines will provide further support to overall momentum.
'Nevertheless, Malaysia's growth prospect faces mounting pressures from an uncertain global environment, as the ongoing US-MY trade negotiations adds uncertainty to the overall trade outlook,' said HLIB.
Downside risks includes a potential deterioration in Malaysia's export competitiveness relative to regional peers due to disproportionate tariff exposure, as well as weaker global consumer sentiment.
In light of these headwinds, we maintain our 2025 GDP growth forecast at 4.0%.
With a stronger-than-expected 2Q25 GDP, we continue to expect Bank Negara Malaysia to keep the overnight policy rate unchanged at 2.75% for the rest of 2025. —July 1, 2025

Liverpool to sign Hugo Ekitike in £69m deal: Reports

LONDON: Liverpool have agreed to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth an initial £69 million (US$92 million), according to reports on Monday. The Premier League champions switched their focus to Ekitike following Newcastle's refusal to sell Sweden striker Alexander Isak, who is valued at around £150 million by the Magpies. Newcastle and Manchester United were also interested in Ekitike, but Liverpool look set to win the race for one of Europe's hottest young stars. It is believed the Reds have agreed to pay a potential further £10 million in add-ons to sign the 23-year-old Frenchman, whose overall price tag could reach £79 million. Once the transfer is completed, Ekitike will link up with Arne Slot's side on their pre-season tour of Asia. Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 games in all competitions for Frankfurt last season after joining the Bundesliga club from Paris Saint-Germain. He was an unused substitute during his side's pre-season friendly against FSV Frankfurt on Saturday, with Eintracht boss Dino Toppmoller admitting Ekitike's impending departure was "a bitter loss." Liverpool have an opening in their forward line after Diogo Jota's recent death in a car crash in Spain. The Reds are also believed to be willing to sell Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez, while Colombia forward Luis Diaz has been the target of a rejected bid from Bayern Munich. Liverpool have already splashed out £116 million on Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz, as well as signing defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez from Bayer Leverkusen and Bournemouth respectively. Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has also linked up with Arne Slot's side since the end of last season after agreeing his move from Valencia in 2024.--AFP

[UPDATED]: MACC questions 27 witnesses in scrap metal, e-waste smuggling probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has questioned 27 witnesses in connection with its operation against a syndicate involved in the smuggling of scrap metal and e-waste across five states. The syndicate is believed to have bribed enforcement officers, resulting in a loss of export tax revenue estimated at more than RM950 million. According to a source, one of the suspects believed to be involved in the activities was also questioned today. "However, no arrests have been made so far. "To date, the MACC has frozen a total of 324 bank accounts, 142 belonging to companies and 182 to individuals, involving nearly RM150 million, with seized assets amounting to approximately RM183 million. "In total, the value of seized and frozen assets now stands at more than RM332 million," the source said. Meanwhile, MACC Special Operations Division senior director, Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, when contacted, confirmed the information and said that the MACC is still in the process of identifying suspects linked to the syndicate, which has caused the government to suffer export tax losses of more than RM950 million over the past six years. He added that the MACC is currently scrutinising the financial sources of the suspects and the companies under investigation in collaboration with agencies such as the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM), and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). "In addition to investigations under Sections 16 and 18 of the MACC Act 2009, as well as offences related to money laundering, probes are also being conducted under the Income Tax Act 1967 and the Customs Act 1967 by the relevant agencies involved in this operation," he said. It was reported that three bungalows, a penthouse, shop lots, land, oil palm plantations, luxury cars, and luxury watches are among the assets seized, estimated to be worth more than RM183 million, following a raid on a scrap metal smuggling syndicate across five states that began yesterday. According to sources, the raids under Op Metal were carried out by the Special Operations Division of the MACC in collaboration with the Customs Department, Inland Revenue Board, and Bank Negara Malaysia. The operation also saw the freezing of 45 company accounts and 82 individual bank accounts involving a total value of about RM51 million. The source added that during the raid, the MACC also seized five luxury watches, namely Patek Philippe, Tag Heuer, Rolex, Omega Speedmaster and Omega Seamaster, estimated to be worth more than RM740,000. The MACC also conducted searches at 13 new locations in Penang, Kedah, Johor and around the Klang Valley on July 15.
