Premier League star 'speechless' after Diogo Jota attended his wedding last week
Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa has been left 'speechless' after good friend Diogo Jota tragically died aged 28 in a car crash. The Liverpool star and his brother, Andre, were killed in the early hours of Thursday morning near Zamora in northwestern Spain.
It was only last Friday, June 27, that Jota had been at Sa's wedding. The pair got to know each other while playing together at Porto during the 2016-17 season and later the Portuguese national team, celebrating two Nations League titles together.
Sa, 32, married actress Raquel Jacob at a castle in the Portuguese city of Braga, with Jota in attendance. On Saturday, Jacob told her 62,000 Instagram followers: "Yesterday we lived the most magical day of our lives. A perfect day, filled with love, smiles, happy tears and tight hugs.
"Thank you to everyone who has been with us, near and far - every presence, every gesture and every word made this moment even more special. We will forever cherish this day in our hearts."
After Thursday's devastating news broke, Sa shared an image of the forward and his brother from their Porto days on Instagram. As the caption, the Woves shot-stopper simply wrote: "Speechless."
Tributes flooded in throughout Thursday, with Jurgen Klopp, Sir Kenny Dalglish and multiple Liverpool players among those to pay their respects with public messages of condolence. Liverpool's CEO of football, Michael Edwards, and Richard Hughes, the club's sporting director, wrote a joint message to supporters.
"There is nothing that we can say in this moment to ease the pain of such a devastating tragedy. We all feel utterly bereft right now," they said. "In such heartbreaking circumstances, it is our responsibility to acknowledge the collective grief we are experiencing, to pay tribute to our Diogo, and to offer unwavering support to his family who remain our absolute priority at this time.
"Diogo's wife, Rute, their three beautiful children, his parents and wider family are facing an unimaginable loss. This tragic accident has taken not only Diogo, but also his brother, Andre Silva. We mourn them both equally. We must respect the family's privacy and give them the space to grieve in whichever way they need.
"Of course, we - his Liverpool family - are also struggling to come to terms with what has happened. As his teammates, friends and colleagues, we are consumed by shock and sorrow. We know our supporters, his national team, former clubs and teammates and the wider football community share in this grief. This is a tragedy that transcends Liverpool Football Club.
"In the coming days, we as a club will look to honour our beloved number 20 with the respect and affection he so richly deserves. We will strive to make these tributes meaningful and inclusive of our supporters, to whom Diogo meant so much.
"For now, we express a love that is filled with deep sorrow and pain. We have lost someone truly irreplaceable. Rest in peace, Diogo."

Nuno Borges says Wimbledon blocked Portugal shirt as tribute to Diogo Jota
Instead he wore a black ribbon pinned to his hat during Friday's third-round match against Karen Khachanov, but said his team had initially pushed for a more visible tribute. 'I know Wimbledon is usually not very flexible with attire,' Borges told the PA news agency. 'But I was told we could still do something to pay our respects for what happened, so I think it was a nice gesture. 'He was a great footballer. It was a tragedy.' Borges, who lost a five-set thriller, said his agent contacted Wimbledon about the idea of wearing a Portugal shirt, and even tried to source a white version to comply with dress rules, but it was not approved. 'We initially talked about getting a full jersey to walk on court,' he said. 'I even tried to find one in white, but it was turned down, so we ended up doing something a little smaller.' Asked if Wimbledon should have allowed the shirt, he said: 'I think that's what makes Wimbledon special and different from every other Slam, so I really don't know.' Wimbledon relaxed its 148-year-old dress code in light of Jota's death, allowing players to wear black ribbons or armbands. Borges was among several players who did, including fellow Portuguese doubles player Francisco Cabral. Cabral, who wore a ribbon on his shirt sleeve during a doubles match with Lucas Miedler, said: 'Yesterday the idea of wearing a black strap came up – that was not allowed. 'I asked for permission to use the black ribbon and they let me play with it.' He described it as 'an honour', adding: 'It was not for the best reason – he was an inspiration not only for me but for the country in general. 'He made so much in the sport and conquered so much in my life. If I helped 1% for the family I will be super happy.' Cabral and Miedler lost their second-round match in straight sets to Czech pair Petr Nouza and Patrik Rikl. Wimbledon's dress code has long restricted visible colour on court, and tributes are rarely granted. The gesture marked a rare moment of flexibility from organisers, after the deaths of Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who were killed in Spain while travelling to catch a ferry to England. British doubles player and Liverpool fan Neal Skupski had also taken a black armband for his match on Thursday, but opted not to wear it after learning of the death of his grandmother shortly after coming off court. He said he may wear one 'in the next couple of days'.

Chelsea's Pedro Neto fights back tears as he pays tribute to friend Diogo Jota at Club World Cup after Liverpool star's tragic death at the age of 28
Chelsea and Palmeiras observed a period of silence in honour of Diogo Jota ahead of kick-off in Friday night's FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final in Philadelphia. The game took place around 48 hours after Liverpool star Jota and his brother Andre Silva had died in a car crash in northern Spain. Pedro Neto had been a team-mate of Jota at international level with Portugal and the pair were understood to have formed a close friendship over the years. Neto held up a Chelsea shirt printed with the names of Diogo and Andre as both sets of players lined up around the centre circle ahead of Friday's game. Former Wolves ace Neto was named in Chelsea's starting XI after manager Enzo Maresca told reporters earlier in the day that the winger would be given the choice over whether he wanted to play following the devastating news of his friend's death. Neto looked visibly emotional and appeared to be fighting back tears during the moment of silence. More to follow.

Meghan opens up about July 4 ‘tradition' and second date with Harry
The pair now include children Archie and Lilibet in the tradition, Meghan added. Posting a picture of seven cupcakes on social media, Meghan wrote: 'Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate. 'Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition. 'Happy Independence Day! May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes'. The duchess was also seen smiling in the kitchen and preparing fruit platters in a reel posted by her As Ever brand to mark the US holiday. A video on As Ever's Instagram account, captioned 'Happy 4th of July!' showed Meghan preparing boards of fruit and jam. Earlier this week, the duchess' new rose wine, which is said to 'capture the essence of sun-drenched outdoor moments' and costs more than £20 a bottle, sold out within an hour. Meghan launched her As Ever Napa Valley Rose 2023, described as having 'soft notes of stone fruit, gentle minerality, and a lasting finish', on Tuesday. The beverage, priced at more than £65 for a minimum three-bottle order, had only appeared to be available for US customers to buy, with shipping addresses limited to America. The duchess made her social media return in early 2025 and regularly shares personal milestones and professional updates through her Instagram account. Harry and Meghan have been raising their children in Montecito, California, since announcing they were stepping back as working members of the royal family on January 8 2020. The couple have since been at the centre of tensions with other royals, with the duke becoming estranged from his father, the King, and his brother, the Prince of Wales. In a recent interview, Harry said he 'would love a reconciliation' with his family, claiming Charles will not speak to him and expressing concern that he does not know 'how much longer my father has'.
