JENDELA Phase 2 starts September with hybrid telecom approach
Nearly 3,000 sites will be upgraded under Phase 2, moving away from traditional tower construction.
'We are considering hybrid solutions, like 30-metre monopoles, instead of full-sized towers where feasible. This will accelerate deployment,' Fahmi said during a Dewan Rakyat session.
The minister was responding to Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng, who raised concerns over poor 4G and 5G coverage in rural schools.
Fahmi confirmed that 4G coverage in Julau's populated areas has reached 58.28 per cent, with 43 new telecom towers and 44 upgraded transmitter stations completed as of June 30.
Fibre-optic access has also been extended to 1,391 premises.
However, 5G rollout in Julau is still under review, with priority given to urban and industrial zones.
'Rural areas, including Julau, will receive 5G in stages based on infrastructure readiness,' he added.
Sarawak's SMART 600 initiative is complementing federal efforts, with 29 new towers already operational and 15 under construction.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has partnered with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) to boost connectivity in the state.
Additionally, 12 Point of Presence (PoP) broadband hubs in Julau now offer high-speed internet, with 1,225 subscription ports supporting speeds up to 1Gbps. – Bernama

'Govt offices must play National Month song'
PUTRAJAYA: All government offices must play this year's National Day and Malaysia Day theme song Malaysia Madani Rakyat Disantuni. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the "catchy, melodious and pleasant" song would ignite the spirit of the National Month. The song is composed by Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, arranged by young composer Affan Mazlan and performed by Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin. "I feel this year's theme song is truly magical and extraordinary. The song has also caught the attention and praise of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who said it was 'really, really good'," he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly here yesterday. Present were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching; Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. The song made its official debut at the National Month Launch and Jalur Gemilang Flag-Raising Ceremony at Dataran Tanjung Emas in Muar, Johor on Sunday. "I am asking that the ministry play the theme song either in the lobby or as background music during official events. We will also propose to the Prime Minister's Department that this song be played at all official events attended by the prime minister during the National Month. "This will be discussed further with the department," he said. KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- The focus of today's Dewan Rakyat sitting is on the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, a roadmap that will chart the nation's five-year development plan from 2026 to 2030. According to the Order Paper on the official Parliament website, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, is scheduled to table the 13MP at noon, following the Minister's Question Time and oral question session, which begins at 10 am. After the tabling of the 13MP, the Dewan Rakyat sitting will be adjourned before the debate on the plan begins next Monday and is expected to run for eight days, followed by ministers' replies over four days starting Aug 18. In a Facebook post yesterday, the Prime Minister said the 13MP, themed 'Melakar Semula Pembangunan', was formulated as a comprehensive development plan focused on ensuring equitable and fair upliftment without sidelining any group.
