IT WAS a proud moment for 25 police officers and personnel when they were awarded commendation certificates by Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar.
The awards acknowledged their commitment and service in ensuring public safety and security.
Among the recipients was Kpl Harvinder Singh, 37, who is attached to Taman Universiti police station under the Johor Baru North police district headquarters.
The Ipoh-born cop serves in the crime prevention department of the police station in a busy Iskandar Puteri suburb.
'While out on patrol, we received information about drug trafficking activity taking place.
'We stopped a car for inspection. Inside the vehicle was a couple, and further checks found 180 packets of drugs,' Kpl Harvinder told StarMetro when met during the Johor police monthly assembly at state police headquarters in Johor Baru.
With the arrest of the two suspects, he said they were able to curb drug trafficking activities.
'I feel very proud and happy to have been presented with the certificate.'
Kpl Harvinder, who has served in the force for 15 years, never thought growing up that he would be a policeman.
'My dream was to become a doctor to save lives.
'However, fate decided that I would be able to do this wearing a policeman's uniform, and I am very proud to do so,' he shared.
Another recipient, Sjn Mohd Fauzi Karto, 49, who is also attached to Taman Universiti police station, said this was his second commendation in his 29 years of service.
The first was presented by Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat just before he retired as Johor police chief last year.
'Receiving such a certificate from our chief makes it all worthwhile, because it shows that our work and dedication are recognised,' he said.
Inspector Abdul Usairi Saini, who is attached to Kulai police district headquarters narcotics department, received the certificate following the success of a police operation which led to the arrest of a drug trafficker earlier this year.
'Police had launched a major narcotics operation during which we had arrested a local man for possessing about 8kg of ecstasy powder.
'This certificate will surely give me the encouragement to carry out my duties well,' said the father of two from Kuching, Sarawak, who has been with the force since 2008.
Earlier in his speech, Comm Kumar congratulated recipients for playing a major role in ensuring public order and safety.
'The public is always watching. Our actions, good or bad, are constantly under scrutiny.
'As men of law, we must uphold integrity and professionalism in all that we do,' he said.
On another matter, Comm Kumar said Johor police recorded a 10.3% drop in fatal road accidents in the first four months of 2025.
However, he warned that driver behaviour remained the biggest threat to road safety.
He revealed that 33,555 road accidents were recorded during that four-month period.
Of these, 322 were fatal crashes that led to 359 deaths, a 6.75% drop from the same period last year.
'The primary cause of accidents is still the attitude of road users.
'While the statistics show a positive trend, we will not be able to significantly reduce fatal accidents without strong support and discipline from the public.
'I urge all road users to adopt a more responsible attitude and obey traffic laws,' he said.
Comm Kumar added that Johor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department had maintained a strict approach under its total enforcement and advocacy model.
He explained that operations targeting reckless motorcyclists, street racers, drunk drivers and commercial vehicle violations continued to be a major part of the enforcement strategy.
The Jan-April 2025 period also saw 528 arrests for traffic and criminal offences, he said, with the department achieving a 91.2% investigation paper resolution rate and 85.6% prosecution rate.

July 26 rally: Impromptu stage taken down by DBKL for safety reasons, according to police

Photo: AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: An impromptu stage that was erected by the "Turun Anwar" protesters was taken down by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). 'The stage structure did not guarantee safety, and we were not informed how many people would be on it. The preliminary agreement between police and the organiser was that two Toyota Hilux would be used as the stage,' acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said when contacted. The stage, which had been set up at Dataran Merdeka, was taken down by DBKL around 11.20am. More than 2,000 policemen have been stationed at all key gathering points, including Sogo shopping mall, Masjid Jamek, Masjid Negara and Pasar Seni, from 11am. The rally is anticipated to draw 15,000 participants and is expected to march to Dataran Merdeka at 2pm. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail previously said police would facilitate the rally following a Federal Court ruling on July 1 that struck down Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 as unconstitutional, meaning organisers are no longer legally required to notify authorities in advance.

Young investors urged to approach Malaysia's capital market with caution

IPOH: With more opportunities emerging in Malaysia's capital market, young investors are encouraged to get involved but with caution, strategy, and a solid understanding of financial risks. State tourism, industry, investment, and corridor development committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said young investors must equip themselves with knowledge. 'This knowledge is important to assess risks, formulate sound strategies, and develop the discipline required to make informed decisions. 'At the same time, the rise in youth participation must be matched by greater vigilance against fraud. 'The growing sophistication of investment scams, particularly those targeting inexperienced investors, remains a serious concern,' he said in his speech at the Bursa Malaysia 2025 Investment Carnival held at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Kampar on Saturday (July 26). Loh said alongside the excitement of market entry, there is a real need for heightened awareness. He said fraudulent schemes have become more deceptive, and many first-time investors are falling victim. 'Get-rich-quick scams and bogus investment offers are becoming harder to detect. The number of victims, especially those just starting to invest, is on the rise,' he warned. He said the state government expressed serious concern over the matter, urging collective action. Loh said while enforcement remains crucial, public awareness and individual responsibility are equally important in protecting both oneself and others. 'Every prospective investor must fully understand both the potential gains and the risks involved. 'It is essential that all investment transactions are conducted through legitimate, secure, and regulated channels,' he added. Loh also stressed the need to build a generation of financially literate Malaysians who can serve not just as informed investors, but also as community watchdogs against investment fraud. 'Financially savvy individuals will play a vital role in educating others and forming a line of defence to prevent more people from falling victim to scams,' he said. Loh said the strategic collaboration between Bursa Malaysia and Utar is seen as a significant step in supporting the aspirations of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan, especially in empowering youth and communities through practical and relevant knowledge, including effective financial management. He said the initiative aligns well with Perak's demographic profile, where a large portion of the 2.5mil population comprises young people, regarded as the backbone of the state's development agenda. 'Beyond its role in financial literacy, UTAR has also been directly involved in advancing several key strategic projects within the state. Among the most notable is Utar's participation, along with other higher learning institutions, in the Silver Valley Technology Park (SVTP) in Chemor. 'The high-impact project is expected to drive the growth of mineral-based and advanced technology industries in Perak,' he said. Loh said close collaboration between educational institutions, the government, and the industrial sector is seen as vital in boosting financial literacy among youth, which is increasingly regarded as an urgent need. 'Such efforts will not only unlock greater entrepreneurial potential and workforce readiness in the state, but also help build a stronger foundation for long-term financial stability in Perak,' he added.

Porn VCDs, fake money among case items destroyed by cops

Brickfields OCPD ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood attends disposal of case items at IPD Brickfields Kuala Lumpur. — YAP CHEE HONG/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: Case items worth RM721,239, including pornographic VCDs, counterfeit currency and mobile phones, have been disposed of by police following the conclusion of legal proceedings. Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said the items were seized in raids conducted by the Brickfields Criminal Investigation Department and Commercial Crime Investigation Department from 2017 until this year. 'A total of 138 investigation papers were opened, involving offences such as vice-related activities at massage parlours, illegal gambling and entertainment outlets,' he told reporters at a disposal ceremony here yesterday. ACP Ku Mashariman said the items were disposed of in accordance with legal procedures following the conclusion of trials and sentencing of the suspects. 'This process not only ensures compliance with the law but also helps free up storage space and prevents theft or misuse of case items,' he added. 'One of the major cases involved the seizure of US$400,000 (RM1.6mil) in counterfeit US currency,' ACP Ku Mashariman said. 'We busted a group of foreign nationals last year who attempted to sell the fake notes by offering an exchange to ringgit at lower rates.' The suspects had packaged the forged currency in sealed plastic to make it appear genuine. 'They were later convicted and sentenced to a year and three months in prison,' ACP Ku Mashariman said.
