Johor Royal Botanical Gardens opens to public with themed gardens, regal landmarks & access to the zoo

Johor has officially unveiled one of its most anticipated attractions — the Johor Royal Botanical Gardens, or Taman Botani Diraja Johor. Now open to the public, this expansive green haven is nestled within the regal grounds of the Istana Besar Johor and should be included in your itinerary. Covering 56 acres, the garden has been designed as a botanical showcase, featuring curated plant collections that highlight both Johor's native species and rare plants from beyond the state. Each section of the garden has its own theme, allowing visitors to journey through a variety of landscapes and ecosystems. Among the featured areas are the Heliconia & Ginger Garden, Rainforest Dipterocarp Zone, Orchid Garden, Herb Garden, and Palm Grove. Visitors can also explore the Tropical Endemic Collection, Pine Grove, Bamboo Garden, Fernarium, and the Exotic Garden. Adding to the garden's charm are other notable landmarks, featuring Bukit Bintang, Tugu Bendera, Laman Inggeris, Chinese Hall, Bukit Zaharah Castle and Japanese House, which offer peaceful resting spots and photo-taking opportunities throughout the grounds. A single loop around the garden covers a distance of approximately 2km, or 3K steps, which takes about 40 minutes to complete. For those wishing to wander further, the full walking route spans nearly 5km, or roughly 7.5K steps. Entry is kept accessible, with tickets priced at RM2 for Malaysian adults and senior citizens, and RM30 for non-Malaysian adults and seniors. Admission is free for children under 5 and for individuals with disabilities. Tickets must be secured in advance via the official online portal; no walk-ins available. This botanical garden forms a key part of Johor's wider tourism strategy ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026. To enhance connectivity and convenience, a new entrance is currently being developed to link the garden with the nearby Johor Zoo. Once complete, this integration will provide a smoother, more cohesive experience for guests exploring the city's natural and cultural attractions. One can only imagine what's next on the horizon, and personally, I can't wait to see what more Johor has in store. It's The Summer Of Spritzes, Patios And Pasta In Los Angeles

Spritzes at Hotel Bel-Air are made with fresh local fruit. If you go to the right places, summer in Los Angeles can feel a lot like a European vacation. You know the setting and the feeling. You sit outside on a beautiful patio while you people-watch. You drink spritzes and eat pasta before indulging in dessert and coffee. You linger because this is what you do in situations like this. It's all about, as the Italians say, the sweetness of doing nothing. You have through August 2 to soak up this kind of scene at Angelini Grill, a terrific pop-up at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel. The Peninsula likes to use its Belvedere brasserie for pop-ups, and we've previously enjoyed both Sushi Nakazawa and Camphor's appearances there. Angelini Grill, helmed by L.A. icon Gino Angelini and Angelini Osteria executive chef Gianpiero Ceppaglia, is serving excellent shrimp and calamari spiedini, standout pastas like linguine with Santa Barbara sea urchin and baller main dishes like Roman-style Dover sole and veal chop Milanese. This is Angelini, so there's also lasagna verde with a hearty beef ragu and tonnarelli allo scoglio that's loaded with lobster, shrimp, mussels, clams and calamari. You can also eat vitello tonnato (like every chef who was in Turin for the World's 50 Best Restaurants events this summer) at Angelini Grill. Gino Angelini, who has his own grocery-store line and mentored chefs like Ori Menashe, continues to be an ace at creating transportive experiences. Sit outside at the Belvedere with a cocktail and you might feel like you're in Positano. The Belvedere at the Peninsula Beverly Hills is a lovely setting for pop-ups like Angelini Grill. Another luxury Los Angeles destination, Hotel Bel-Air, also has the European summer vibes going. With new culinary director Joe Garcia (who previously ran the kitchen at Manzke and Bicyclette after working at the French Laundry) at the helm, what's simply known as the Restaurant at Hotel Bel-Air is a lovely summer getaway. You can eat perfectly composed Niçoise salads and comforting tortilla soup (a beloved dish at Hotel Bel-Air that Garcia knows he can't ever take off the menu) as part of long lunches that also include beautiful summer pastas like sweet corn agnolotti with butter-poached Maine lobster. Garcia is hyper-focused on finding top-tier ingredients. He speaks enthusiastically about procuring big hunks of tuna that allow him to serve thick pieces of raw fish that melt in your mouth. He goes to Tenerelli Orchards himself to get the best nectarines and peaches. The goal is gathering the best ingredients around you and letting them shine. This, of course, is a very European way to think about food. Hotel Bel-Air is also showcasing its new garden spritz menu, which features ingredients like fresh strawberries and lemons, the latter of which are from the property's own trees. There's also a new pastry cart with treats from Hotel Bel-Air's on-site Patisserie for all your cream puff and croissant cravings. Buzzy new Los Angeles restaurants like Alba and Beethoven Market are also dazzling guests with pasta-powered meals on their patios. Alba and Beethoven Market, in fact, are two of the hardest reservations in the city. Sometimes, all a lot of people want (especially when they're jealous of their friends who won't stop Instagramming from the Amalfi Coast and the French Riviera) is good spaghetti, properly made cocktails and a patio with a nice vibe. This is L.A. summer for those who don't use 'summer' as a verb.

The 20 Best Countries For Digital Nomads, According To A New Report

Working remotely with a view: As more Americans go digital nomad, countries like Malaysia, Colombia and Hungary are emerging as top choices for 2025. getty Dreaming about working remotely from abroad? You're not alone. A growing number of Americans are planning to take their jobs on the road in 2025—and many are searching for the best countries for digital nomads, along with information on digital nomad visas and remote jobs. But where should you actually go? Gamblizard, a personal finance platform, has the answers in a new report. The company analyzed every country currently offering digital nomad visas to U.S. citizens—there are currently well over 60. It then and ranked the top 20 destinations based on factors like rent, healthcare, internet speed and the income required to qualify for a visa. According to Jamie Wall, the personal finance strategist at Gamblizard and the lead researcher behind the report, they did this report because it felt like a tipping point: U.S. searches for the term 'digital nomad' have jumped 254% this year, and studies show that one in four young Americans plan to go remote abroad in 2025. 'More young Americans are rejecting the idea of returning to offices and actively planning to live and work abroad,' Wall told me in an interview. 'We wanted to explore where they could do that well—live affordably, work remotely, and really get the most value out of that choice.' Coming in at the top of the list as the best country for digital nomads is Malaysia. 'Malaysia's mix of affordability, modern infrastructure, and accessibility makes it incredibly attractive for remote workers,' says Wall. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The top-ranked destination for digital nomads in 2025, thanks to its affordability, infrastructure, and easy access to the rest of Southeast Asia. getty According to the report, rent is nearly 80% cheaper than in the U.S., healthcare is affordable (averaging just $458 per year) and many people speak English. Its main city, Kuala Lumpur, is particularly attractive for digital nomads—it's got fast internet, modern infrastructure and a major airport hub for weekend trips to nearby spots like Bali and Bangkok. Next up is Colombia, where you can qualify for a digital nomad visa on just $750 a month. Some of the top digital nomad cities include Medellín and Bogotá, which offer co-working spaces and thriving tech scenes. Hungary takes third place, thanks to strong infrastructure, quality healthcare and one of the cheapest rental markets in Europe. In fourth place is Brazil, which has low housing costs and an increasingly international remote work scene. Rounding out the top five is Romania, one of the most affordable countries in Europe, with fast Wi-Fi, low rent and many people speaking English—especially in major cities like Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca. Some of these top-ranking destinations don't appear on other traditional expat lists. 'One big surprise was how often Eastern European and Southeast Asian countries outperformed traditional expat hotspots,' says Wall. 'Portugal has long been a favorite, but it's now facing real pressure. Rents have spiked, and the minimum income required for a visa is relatively high. Meanwhile, countries like Romania and Hungary offer similar or better infrastructure at a fraction of the cost.' The rest of the top 10 list includes Thailand, Portugal, Turkey, Spain and South Korea—a mix of established favorites and rising stars that combine strong infrastructure with a relatively low cost of living. Digital Nomad Trends The report also reveals some things about the mindset of young people today and offers a larger cultural shift. 'This generation values freedom and autonomy,' says Wall. 'They're prioritizing experiences over possessions, and digital nomadism lets them see the world without stepping off the career ladder.' While destinations like Portugal and Spain still draw plenty of interest, the report suggests a shift in where Americans are actually looking—and that Americans are widening their lens. 'We expect more countries to invest in long-stay tourism and remote work infrastructure,' says Wall. 'In a way, this trend is democratizing global travel—it's pushing attention beyond the usual hotspots.' The report also highlights one surprisingly useful benchmark: the income required to qualify for a visa. While that number can vary widely, it often reflects the local cost of living. 'If a country only asks for $1,000 a month to qualify, chances are good you can live quite comfortably there,' says Wall. Read on for the 20 best countries for digital nomads in 2025.
