Building the foundation for success
Start with the business fundamentals. Understand yourself before trying to understand AI. From this starting point, methods for clearly capturing data will emanate from the way the business operates day to day.
Composable architecture comes next; rapid feature deployment is a must in a digital economy.
Finally, if the business can dig into its existing systems to understand its workflows and business logic, then the fundamentals are in place. The change before the change is complete. Subsequent modernisation will be more transparent and flexible, leading to reduced risk.
Milestones provide confidence and clarity along this journey. A move to the cloud might come first, or perhaps you will choose to rewrite your application architecture.
Whatever foundations you build, AI will sit on a far firmer base than if simply tacked onto a legacy stack. Blending the strengths of technology and people, regional organisations can take deep analytical dives into legacy assets.
Tools even exist to offer data-driven automation of this process, backed by the right skillsets, to deliver a de-risked, cost-controlled, modernisation process.
Essentially, the organisation uses advanced AI in controlled circumstances to pave the way for embedding AI deeper into the fabric of business.
This core modernisation is, remember, only a means to an end. In the GCC, where bold innovation is the norm, businesses already understand the power of AI. Governments and businesses here are practiced early adopters, so they have many lessons to draw on.
They know that adoption of a new technology often requires fundamental shifts in infrastructure, business processes and even corporate culture. AI is a many-headed beast capable of fulfilling a rich menu of use cases.
Your organisation has to consider its industry, workforce, operating capital, growth ambitions and more. It must grapple with the eccentricities of its people, shareholders and market. And it must be clear-eyed about where it wants AI to take it and how to undertake the journey with the lowest possible risk.
As is abundantly evident at this point, embracing AI will no longer be optional for GCC businesses. To remain competitive, organisations must modernise their core systems and infrastructure, prioritising clean data and composable architecture. This foundation will enable seamless integration of AI, unlocking its potential while minimising risks. With the region's history of bold innovation and a readiness to embrace transformative technologies, the GCC is well-positioned to lead in this new digital era. This is a pivotal moment for organisations to align bold technological ambitions with solid execution, paving the way for long-term success.

Gartner: MENA IT Spending To Reach $169 Billion In 2026
IT spending in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is projected to total $169 billion in 2026, an increase of 8.9% from 2025, according to the latest forecast by Gartner, Inc. 'The MENA region is rapidly emerging as a global tech powerhouse, with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) leveraging its stability, infrastructure and forward-looking policies to attract global partners and build digital skills that empower innovation and support resilient AI-driven economies,' said Mim Burt, Practice VP at Gartner. 'Even amid global economic and geopolitical uncertainty, chief information officers (CIOs) in MENA are making strategic investments in AI, intelligent automation and multi-cloud strategies, while strengthening cyber defenses and advancing talent upskilling. These efforts are not only driving innovation and economic diversification but also contributing to the region's projected IT spending growth in 2026.' Data Center Systems Remain Highest-Growth Segment in 2026 Despite Slower Momentum Growth in data center systems spending in MENA is expected to remain strong in 2026, though the pace will ease compared to 2025. Spending is projected to increase 37.3% in 2026, making it the highest-growing IT segment, but at a slower rate than this year as the market shifts from rapid build-out to incremental and sustained investment (see Table 1). 'Data center system spending is expected to accelerate as MENA CIOs and technology leaders invest in AI-enabled software and AI-optimized infrastructure,' said Eyad Tachwali, VP, Advisory at Gartner. 'This surge is largely fueled by pent-up demand for generative AI (GenAI) and advanced machine learning, which depend on robust computing power for large-scale data processing. Most of this demand is being driven by governments, hyperscalers, technology providers and organizations focused on developing and deploying AI models, rather than traditional enterprises or consumers.' AI Integration Reshapes IT Spending Priorities in MENA Software spending in MENA is expected to grow 13.9% to $20.4 billion in 2026, as organizations accelerate adoption of GenAI capabilities. Gartner predicts that by 2028, 75% of global software spend will be on solutions with GenAI functionality. 'CIOs will increasingly be offered embedded GenAI capabilities in enterprise applications, productivity and developer tools, more advanced large language models as well as AI-optimized servers to support AI-as-a-service,' said Burt. 'Providers are also exploring new pricing models across software and hardware to drive revenue.' As AI becomes central to innovation, its integration into software and IT services is fundamentally reshaping spending priorities across the region, with IT services spending in MENA projected to grow 8.3% in 2026. 'With the rapid acceleration of AI infrastructure and adoption in MENA, CIOs must move beyond GenAI as a productivity tool and embed it into the heart of their business strategy,' said Tachwali. 'The real competitive edge will come from building strong data foundations, composable technology platforms and cultivating AI-fluent talent—core enablers for unlocking differentiated value from AI.'

Etihad Rail to run in UAE towns; residents say 'will feel more connected to cities'
As Etihad Rail expands through towns like Sakamkam, Al Sila, and Ruwais, residents are embracing the project with optimism. Residents believe the railway will not only make travel more accessible and affordable, but also bring a much-needed boost to tourism and the local economy. Fujairah resident Reem Al Yammahi lives in Sakamkam, which is one of the locations where a train station is confirmed to be. The railway track runs right behind her house, which will be a bonus for her, she said, because she likes to visit Abu Dhabi a lot, but the two-hour drive gets tiring. 'As a busy student, I would like to read some articles or do a quick study session, or anything other than driving in those two hours. With the railway, it would probably be even less than two hours." She added that the Etihad Rail running by her town would be 'a great way to boost the economy. I feel like it will make it easier for tourists to navigate the entire UAE because it connects main cities, and it will lessen the cost of traveling from one emirate to another.' The railway track runs through the entire country, from Fujairah Port in the east, which overlooks the Gulf of Oman, and ending at Ghuweifat in the far west of Abu Dhabi. 'I'm so excited about the project overall. I feel like it will connect everyone in the Emirates. And it's so environment-friendly,' Al Yammahi said. The project is a part of the UAE Railway Programme which aims to develop a sustainable road transport system and reduce 70 to 80 per cent of carbon emissions. Noura Almansoori, a resident in Al Sila, a city in the western-most region of Abu Dhabi, close to the border of Saudi Arabia, said she feels 'happy' about the Etihad Rail passing through her hometown, as it currently 'feels very disconnected from the UAE.' Al Sila is a town with a population of a little over 10,500, according to the Abu Dhabi Census of 2024. 'The rails might make the town people feel more connected to the other cities, including me,' she said. Almansoori said she believes the Etihad Rail will make people more aware of her small town and bring in more tourists to the western region of the UAE, 'to discover the beauty and serenity of my town,' she added. 'I imagine it being very lively and fun instead it of being very dull. I imagine younger people would like to visit,' she said when asked about the train's impact on her town. 'I imagine the town people getting their [needs] easily and becoming more connected with other parts of the country.'

HSBC lifts S&P 500 year-end target to 6,400 on AI boom, easing policy uncertainty
HSBC on Tuesday raised its year-end S&P 500 index target by more than 800 points to 6,400, citing euphoria around artificial intelligence and easing U.S. policy uncertainty. The upgrade comes after similar moves from other brokerages, including Goldman Sachs and BofA Global Research, last month. "The AI trade is powering the tech/AI cohort higher (roughly half of the S&P 500), while reduced policy uncertainty (namely tariffs) is fueling the 'rest' of the market," HSBC strategists wrote in a note. The S&P 500 has rebounded 30.8% since its April 8 low, following U.S. President Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs. The index notched fresh highs in July, driven by upbeat earnings from tech giants Microsoft and Meta Platforms , which renewed investor optimism around AI. HSBC's new target represents a marginal 1.1% upside to the index's last close at 6,329.94. Its previous target was 5,600 for the index. The brokerage expects slower growth in the U.S. in the second half of the year, allowing the Federal Reserve to reduce interest rates, and sees the tariff impact to remain muted and temporary. But in its bull-case scenario, HSBC expects the index to end the year at 7,000. "We believe there is still room for margins to expand in see valuations as stretched for the tech sector," HSBC strategists said in a note to clients.
