Mass tourism, soaring rents, worker exploitation, inequality, and elitism — protests in Venice in recent days against Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's high-profile wedding have shone a spotlight on global frustrations.
Local politicians dismissed the protesters as a small fringe group. Yet, Bezos's celebrity status and Venice's iconic scenery gave activists a global stage they used to amplify their message.
Banners reading 'No Space for Bezos' hung from the famous Rialto Bridge, and a giant canvas laid out in St Mark's Square urged the tech billionaire to pay more taxes — images that quickly spread worldwide.

'Bezos, out of the lagoon', the demonstrators chanted as they wound through the city centre, some brandishing signs that read: 'Eat the rich', 'Rejected', and accusations that Venice's mayor is 'corrupt'.
Concerns about further disruptions forced Bezos and his bride to shift their final and biggest celebrity party from the city centre to a more secluded spot in the eastern part of Venice's lagoon.
'The idea that the city should be seen as a film set, a stage, or an amusement park has never been clearer than with Bezos's wedding,' said Tommaso Cacciari, a leader of the No Space for Bezos movement, speaking to Reuters.
At the final protest on Saturday, around 1,000 residents and activists gathered outside Venice's train station under the blazing sun, then marched about 1.5 kilometres to the Rialto Bridge.
They carried banners with slogans like 'Kisses yes, Bezos no,' a nod to Venice's romantic image, and 'No Space for Bezos,' featuring a rocket in reference to his Blue Origin space company.
Meanwhile, many Venetian businesses and politicians welcomed the wedding, praising the significant boost it brought to the local economy. Luca Zaia, the regional governor of Veneto, said the city should be proud to have hosted the event.

Global minimum tax: G7 endorses 'side-by-side' system replacing top-up levies; US, UK firms exempted

In a landmark development, the Group of Seven (G7) nations have agreed to exempt US-headquartered multinational corporations from key provisions of the global minimum tax agreement under a new "side-by-side" system. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now British businesses will also benefit from similar relief. As per news agency ANI, the new proposal, backed by the US and its G7 partners, will allow American firms to be taxed only domestically, on both foreign and local profits, rather than face additional top-up taxes overseas. The framework recognises existing US tax laws, specifically its domestic minimum tax, and offers a carve-out from the OECD's Income Inclusion Rule (IIR) and Undertaxed Profits Rule (UTPR). The G7 announcement, released by Canada, which currently holds the rotating presidency, said the system was intended to 'provide greater stability and certainty in the international tax system moving forward.' The breakthrough came after the United States dropped Section 899, a controversial clause in US President Donald Trump's tax bill, which had proposed retaliatory taxes on foreign companies operating in the US. According to news agency Reuters, its removal paved the way for broader agreement and eased concerns in countries like the UK, where businesses feared exposure to punitive tax provisions. British finance minister Rachel Reeves welcomed the development and was quoted by Reuters as saying, 'Today's agreement provides much-needed certainty and stability for those businesses after they had raised their concerns.' Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Reeves also reaffirmed the UK's continued efforts to combat aggressive tax avoidance globally. The move follows concerns raised earlier this year after Trump pulled the US out of the 2021 OECD-brokered global tax deal through an executive order. That landmark agreement, supported by nearly 140 countries under the Inclusive Framework, had aimed to ensure large multinational companies pay at least a 15% tax rate globally. According to news agency AFP, Trump also threatened retaliatory taxes on countries applying the global rules to US companies, a step that created apprehension among international investors. With the Section 899 provision now withdrawn, the new dual-track solution reflects a broader consensus among G7 nations to preserve tax sovereignty while maintaining progress on tackling base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS). The US Treasury said on X that this side-by-side approach would "preserve important gains made by jurisdictions inside the Inclusive Framework" and that it looks forward to developing this solution further through constructive discussions. The agreement now awaits further deliberation at the OECD level to determine how exemptions for US and UK firms will be formally recognised under the global tax regime. G7 leaders reiterated that the final solution must be "acceptable and implementable to all."

India may ease small car fuel norms amid SUV boom, Maruti could benefit: Report

Maruti Suzuki has had a commanding position in the small car segment for decades, with vehicles such as the Alto and WagonR leading the charge Notify me In a potential policy pivot, the Indian government is considering easing fuel efficiency norms for small cars to counter declining sales in the budget segment. The move follows lobbying efforts by Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, which has seen its entry-level car sales shrink in the face of a booming SUV market, a report by Reuters stated, citing multiple industry and government sources. Small cars losing ground Maruti Suzuki has had a commanding position in the small car segment for decades, with vehicles such as the Alto and WagonR leading the charge. However, consumer preferences and trends have all changed rapidly. Before COVID-19, small cars accounted for nearly two-thirds of Maruti Suzuki's sales, but this has now dropped to below 50 per cent out of the 1.7 million cars it sold in FY2024–25. The fall-off in this segment is emblematic of the wider automotive shift in India, with compact and mid-size SUVs representing the bulk of new car purchases. Also Read : Maruti Suzuki India eyes 4 lakh exports in FY26 to counter domestic market slowdown The government, too, is reportedly concerned about this trend. A senior official told Reuters that sliding demand in the affordable segment could hurt the overall growth of the passenger vehicle industry and limit mobility access for India's lower-income consumers. Proposed norms target sub 1,000 kg cars Under India's current Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) regulations, permissible CO₂ emissions are tied to a car's weight. To comply, automakers must maintain fleet-wide efficiency, often by pushing electric or low-emission models. The proposed revision would ease emission targets specifically for cars weighing under 1,000 kg—offering regulatory relief to companies with a sizable share of small vehicles. Maruti Suzuki, with 10 of its 17 models under this threshold, would be the biggest beneficiary. Hyundai, Renault, Toyota, and JSW MG Motor also sell lightweight models and may gain from the relaxation, though none have formally responded to requests for comment, according to Reuters. Industry pushback The Ministry of Heavy Industries held a closed-door meeting on June 17 with automakers including Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Volkswagen to discuss the possibility of granting small cars more leeway under the upcoming fuel efficiency norms, which are due to take effect in April 2027. However, some automakers are reportedly uneasy. Four sources told Reuters that such a move could disrupt the previously agreed industry consensus on emission standards and potentially grant Maruti an unfair advantage in the market. Also Read : Renault Kiger, Kwid and Triber get benefits of up to ₹ 40,000 Venkatram Mamillapalle, country head of Renault India, told Reuters that the company trusts India's auto industry body to "represent the collective voice of the industry that benefits all stakeholders." Environmental trade offs The sustainability report for 2024, by Suzuki Motor Corporation, Maruti's Japanese parent company, said small cars are environmentally sound—not just because they are driven less and, therefore, happier, but it also consumes less material and energy during production. While the environmental merits of small cars are not in dispute, applying differentiated norms based on size or weight was not part of earlier consultations, four industry sources told Reuters. If implemented, this shift could reshape the policy landscape and affect how future fuel efficiency standards are negotiated.
