After training with the France national youth team, and attending camps at Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax, Raphael Merkies thought moving to Hong Kong in 2016 would wreck his football dream. Nine years later, as an increasingly important figure for the representative team, the Paris-born winger said coming to the city was the making of him. Merkies said it was an easy decision to obtain a passport last year. He made his city team debut in January's Hong Kong-Guangdong Cup, then secured a transfer from Southern to four-time Chinese Super League champions Shandong Taishan the following month. He is set to add to his three caps at the forthcoming East Asian Championship finals in South Korea. 'My mum was a bit more hesitant about me naturalising, because the French passport is very strong,' Merkies said. 'But I had no doubts, and she accepted my decision quite quickly once I'd explained how the passport would help my football. 'My first target was to represent Hong Kong. It's where I grew up and started my career. I want to pay back the trust of the coach, and the support of the fans and Hong Kong.' In a few weeks, my family and I will leave Hong Kong, a city we have called our second home since June 2021. Much has happened in these four years. The world was in the throes of Covid-19. The airport was a ghost town. A few months later, the Omicron wave hit, holding back the city from reopening. Amid geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic headwinds, the local economy, especially retail, real estate and tourism, suffered. But this dynamic city is bouncing back. First, in a step-by-step, practical manner, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu's administration led the city out of the pandemic in late 2022, putting it on the path of steady recovery. Social restrictions were lifted, and Hong Kong regained international connectivity. Second, law and order as well as social stability have returned. Hong Kong fulfilled its obligation under the Basic Law to enact national security legislation last year. Third, Lee embarked on a transformational exercise to adopt a results-oriented approach to governance. The government is embracing a proactive role in delivering public goods, and fostering new growth engines like mega-event tourism and innovation and technology.

Hong Kong's market for pre-owned luxury goods such as Hermes and Chanel handbags has attracted a growing number of resellers from countries such as the Philippines and India, according to industry players. Advertisement Second-hand luxury retailers said Hong Kong had become a top choice for sourcing among Indian and Filipino merchandisers, owing to the city's reputation for selling authentic goods, ease of travel and tax-free status. They also pointed out that the city had a vast amount of second-hand luxury goods due to residents' relative wealth. Tim Lo Hiu-fung, owner of Coco Approved, a second-hand and consignment store that has been operating for 11 years, said the number of Filipino buyers had increased notably following the pandemic. 'We had quite a lot of Filipino sellers who literally just came in and took photos and then sent them to the clients or even did live sales,' Lo stated, referring to the practice of selling to customers through live streaming via social media. Advertisement The pre-owned luxury trade was put in the spotlight weeks ago when a male robber stole 14 pre-owned Hermes handbags before police arrested him and recovered most of the items. Hermes is known for its secretive and exclusive allocation system in which specific highly coveted bags such as the Birkin and Kelly models are rarely displayed openly and are only offered to a clientele who have significant purchase histories or fulfilled certain 'pre-spend' requirements.
