Delhi: JNU's MSc Biotech programme gets flexible exit, entry options
Under the new framework, students who complete one year of the two-year master's course will be awarded with a Postgraduate Diploma in Biotechnology and students who complete two years will get a postgraduate degree, the dean of SBT, Balaji (goes by first name), said on Friday.
'Students will not be applying separately for the diploma. Instead, those who complete the first year of the M.Sc. program can choose to exit after the second semester with the diploma, provided they meet all academic requirements and inform the department in advance,' Balaji told HT on Friday.
He added, 'In addition to this, a new one-year M.Sc. (Research) program is now being offered as a lateral entry option. This flexible program is open to students who have either completed the first year of an M.Sc. in Biotechnology at another institute or finished a four-year undergraduate degree with a research component.'
However, Balaji clarified that the admission to this programme depends on seat availability from the regular two-year M.Sc. course.
'We have a total of 30 seats available in the MSc programme as of now. So if 24 seats have been filled in the first year and we have seven seats left, then those seats will be offered in lateral entry in the second year,' he clarified.
The second year will focus less on theory and more on research, as students will engage in full-time, year-long research project, working closely with faculty on contemporary problems in biotechnology and allied areas.
'To foster critical thinking and discussion, the program includes a vibrant Journal Club, where students analyze recent scientific papers and engage in peer debate, an experience that builds scientific literacy, public speaking, and analytical skills,' Balaji said.
Registration for the first round of admission to SBT is scheduled to end on June 26.

29 NTR district schools among 935 state schools selected for PM SHRI
VIJAYAWADA: The Union Ministry of Education has announced that 935 schools across Andhra Pradesh have been selected for upgradation under the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, including 29 schools from NTR district alone. Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, responding to a question raised by Vijayawada MP Kesineni Shivnath (Chinni) in the LS, confirmed the selection. Kurnool district leads with 54 selected schools, while Visakhapatnam has six. Minister Chaudhary said that the selected schools are chosen through a transparent competitive process and are designed to promote inclusive, modern, and joyful learning environments. The scheme also stresses comprehensive development, beyond academics, by encouraging 21st-century skills and personality growth. States are tasked with identifying infrastructure needs, which are then appraised and approved by the Project Approval Board (PAB). Kesineni urged the Centre to include more schools in the upcoming phases, ensuring that every region benefits from modernised and equitable education facilities under this flagship initiative.

SVU College of Sciences earns praise from SWAYAM-NPTEL
Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) College of Sciences has earned national recognition from the prestigious SWAYAM-NPTEL platform for its active participation in promoting online education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As part of NEP-2020, universities across India have been integrating SWAYAM's online courses, designed and delivered by premier institutions like IITs, NITs, and Central Universities, to enhance students' learning and skills. SOL implements research-based faculty development initiative
New Delhi: Delhi University 's School of Open Learning (SOL) is set to implement a major shift in its academic approach, aimed at enhancing the research capabilities of its faculty. To keep educators updated with the latest developments in their respective fields, SOL will now require its teachers to regularly upgrade their knowledge and skills through active participation in research. The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy, which places a strong emphasis on research, especially in the fourth year of UG programmes.
