Mercury Retrograde Is Coming—and Old Flames Might Resurface

Elle16-07-2025
Life is not a dress rehearsal. But if you feel like slipping off-camera for a few weeks this summer, permission granted. Mercury turns retrograde on July 18, snoozing in theatrical Leo until August 11. During this three-week intermission, lower the cosmic curtain and tend to the backstage affairs of your life.
Mercury, the messenger planet, goes retrograde three times a year. As it passes the Earth in its orbit, it appears to be moving backward through the sky. Although this is an illusion, astrologers can attest to the true impact of an M.R. During this time, everything that Mercury rules also goes in reverse: communication, transportation, scheduling, mobile devices. If we had a dollar for every cracked screen and data leak that happened during Mercury retrograde, we'd have retired to a private island long ago.
Pollyanna spin: Mercury retrogrades can bring hidden blessings. This forced slowdown provides an opportunity to focus on all the 're' activities in your life: revising, revisiting, reconnection, reconfiguring. In other words, the things you generally don't make time for because you're too busy barreling ahead.
Still, we aren't going to hard sell you on the idea that Mercury retrograde is a walk in the park. These three-week cycles are notorious for spinning up misunderstandings, messing with digital devices, and screwing up schedules. People from the past tend to pop back up—and often unceremoniously.
This summer's retrograde comes with extra dramatic flair. Since Mercury is backing up through the Leo part of the sky, this flamboyant fire sign's energy is getting involved. First and foremost, tamp down the peacocking and performative behaviors. Life may not be a dress rehearsal, but if it starts to resemble an episode of The Gilded Age, send your inner Bertha Russell back to her trailer. As the sign of the luxurious royal, Leo can get a little bit too concerned with status, 'society,' and appearances.
Since passionate Leo is one of the zodiac's hopeless romantics, summer love should be approached cautiously from July 18 to August 11. Old flames may reemerge for an encore—or at least a cameo you didn't see coming. Although Mercury retrograde in Leo has a flair for rekindling old sparks, think twice before you jump back into character. Is this relationship really worth reenacting, or it better to move on to a more rewarding script?
Another advisory: Steer clear of any major style updates. Mercury retrograde is never the best time to experiment with drastic haircuts or any wild aesthetic updates. But when it's backing up through vivacious Leo? Let Cardi B handle the Paris Haute Couture Week fashion and just enjoy being a spectator in your quiet luxury OOTDs. The catwalk will still be there after the retrograde.
What will you have to show for yourself? Tap into the imaginative powers of Leo to polish up a project that needs some more BTS love. Pull that half-finished screenplay or painting out, and get back to work on it. Silence notifications, and turn on some music. There are better things to do with your mind and hands than furiously texting your toxic ex.

Leo Season Combined With Mercury In Retrograde Brings Bold Energy — and Major Drama

There won't be a shortage of scroll-stopping moments in the final weeks of July. Leo season kicks off on the 22nd, followed by a Leo new moon on the 24th. Oh, and Mercury is retrograde in Leo from July 18 to August 11. This cosmic recipe is stacked for drama. The only question is: Will you play an active role in the performance—or nibble on popcorn and make it a spectator sport? No matter your choice this Leo season, it wouldn't hurt to borrow the 'sensitive gangster' vibe of Love Island USA season 7 winner Amaya Espinal. Lead with your heart—but don't let people toy with your emotions. And if that means keeping your options open until someone comes along who fits the bill? So be it. Like 'Amaya Papaya,' you might just come out the winner. You can read your daily horoscope here Another Leo-coded hero to look to this month? Jessica, the fun, messy main character played by Megan Stalter in Lena Dunham's new Netflix series, Too Much. (Though we don't necessarily condone breaking into your ex's apartment or discussing UTIs at your boss's dinner party.) Even so, Stalter's Jessica lets it all hang out, which is exactly what captures the heart of British indie rocker Felix, played by Will Sharpe. This is Leo season gold! But beware: It's definitely possible to hit the oversaturation point this summer. Once Mercury is in retrograde, endearing traits can suddenly feel performative. Behaviours that once garnered rave reviews could get the old 'not tonight, babe.' And if that goes down? Well, with Mercury in reverse, self-reflection is warranted. Is it them? Is it you? Is it both of you? We like to think of self-expression happening in two separate fields: the individual field and the relational field. The individual field is all about you doing you—other people's opinions be damned. The relational field demands accountability. Are you tuning in to the other person's energy? Are you interested in meeting them where they are, while also being your authentic self? This is a skill worth polishing. At its best, Leo energy feels more like interactive theater than a Broadway performance. While Leo season is usually a time for unfettered experimentation, in 2025, we'll need to pull back a touch. But don't stem the tide of ideas that flow in. There will be many, especially near the Leo new moon on July 24. Capture them all for consideration in your Notes app, on a mood board, whatever. There are bound to be some gems in there. Mercury retrograde is a great time for reviewing all the half-started projects and plans that are gathering dust in your archives. Just save any hard launches for Virgo season, when common sense prevails once again. In the meantime, make the most of Leo's playful vibes. Dance on rooftops, flirt at swim-up bars, meet friends for umbrella drinks and ridiculous gossip. This is the zodiac sign ruled by the life-giving sun, after all, and it's time we all enjoyed that shine. ELLE Collective is a new community of fashion, beauty and culture lovers. A rare Gilded Age home in NYC will list for $13.9M

A wonderfully preserved Gilded Age mansion is poised to hit the market for $13.9 million as the glamorous homes from that period of time are back in the spotlight. The grand 19th-century limestone residence is at 57 E. 74th St., between Park and Madison avenues. It's one of seven on the historic block designed by noted architects Buchman and Deisler. The listing comes as the buzzy third season of HBO's 'The Gilded Age' is underway, which has created renewed interest in the lavish dwellings where the wealthy resided during that period. It also fortuitously enters the market as a number of city homes from the Gilded Age have recently listed or sold, such as the Stanford White-designed 973 Fifth Ave., which traded hands for $46 million. Horoscope for Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025

LEO season has arrived, but the usual playful and vibrant energy that this time of the year brings might be absent today due to some dreary cosmic weather. However, since LEO is a sign that encourages us to shine our inner light outward, we may be able to lighten the vibe by doing what we can to spread joy, laughter and positivity. As the Mercury retrograde continues, we should also make room to slow down and pause, maybe even take a cat nap. If possible, we should leave the more challenging work and decision-making for another day. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It could take a lot of work not to get sucked into a bad mood, but choosing happiness is always an option. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The comfort of home and the support of your family may be the keys to keeping you calm and grounded. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Just because you get a 'no' doesn't mean that there isn't a 'yes' out there. Your resourcefulness can help you find it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don't be hard on yourself. Take time to appreciate how special you are. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Don't feel pressured to do more than you can. Giving yourself the room that you need to breathe will reignite your flame instead of putting it out. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) If you're feeling like you need to sequester yourself away from everyone for a little while, follow your instincts. You need a break. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Your affinity for teamwork and finding win-win solutions will help you succeed. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Beware of taking on more than you can realistically achieve today. It may be better to focus on just one thing at a time. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) You've probably been so busy as of late that you haven't had much time for fun. Try to make time today. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Don't be afraid to be vulnerable. If someone wants to help you, let them. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Delegating tasks to others may be more efficient than you doing everything yourself. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) You may not be in the mood to do much, but putting in the work now will give you space to play later. FOR TODAY'S BIRTHDAY You have a bright and sunny personality that makes it hard for others to resist. You can disarm the steeliest person with your charm and fun-loving attitude. But when it comes to taking care of serious business, you're determined, purposeful and poised. As a daring and confident person, you're never afraid of taking risks or having the spotlight on you. In fact, you relish in the attention and admiration you get from others. You are a natural star. This year, it may be necessary to take time away from the bright lights so that you can reignite the spark within. BIRTHDATE OF: Selena Gomez, actress/singer; Willem Dafoe, actor; Danny Glover, actor/producer.
