Amazon hires Xbox co-founder to lead ZeroOne team that will create breakthrough products

India Today30-05-2025
Amazon has a new team under its devices unit called the ZeroOne team, which will be led by the co-founder of Xbox and former Microsoft executive, J Allard, according to a report by CNBC. The team has been tasked with creating 'breakthrough' products. Allard, who worked with Microsoft for 19 years, co-founded Xbox. He was one of the prominent members at the time of the Xbox and Xbox 360 console launches. In 2010, Allard stepped down from his role as the technology chief of consumer products at Microsoft, and then worked at GoFundMe as their chief technology and product officer for a year. According to his LinkedIn profile, he then worked on his own company, Project 529 (which he founded in 2007), worked as a board member, and got his fellowship, until he joined Amazon in September 2024. At the time of writing the story, his current role at Amazon was listed as the vice president of ZeroOne. advertisementReportedly, the ZeroOne team will have people across Seattle, San Francisco and Sunnyvale, California. ZeroOne members will reportedly be working on both hardware and software projects. The name ZeroOne apparently signifies that the team will be working on the entire cycle of the product, from the concept to its launch.
The Verge notes that a job listing for the new team reveals that one of these breakthrough products could be a smart home device. Reportedly, the ZeroOne team has job listings for senior roles in applied science, product marketing, and customer insights. The description for the role in applied science reveals that the person will be working on 'a new smart-home product', The Verge report reveals. Amazon already has a series of smart home devices under the Echo range of products that are powered by its AI software Alexa.advertisementAdditionally, Amazon has reportedly also brought together people from across its various divisions, drawing on expertise from teams behind Alexa, the Luna cloud gaming platform, and the Halo sleep-tracking device, according to LinkedIn profiles of those now working on the ZeroOne initiative. One of the group's leaders is the former head of Lightform, a projection mapping startup previously acquired by Amazon. While Amazon is setting up a new team, the company is also cutting some corners at the same time. Earlier this year, Amazon laid off 100 employees from its Devices and Services unit, which oversees products like Echo speakers, Alexa, Kindle, and Zoox self-driving cars. According to the company, these layoffs were needed to align better with its product roadmap and streamline operations. Was it preparing to set up the ZeroOne team? Maybe. At the time, the company had said that the layoffs will help the company move faster.

Flipkart Freedom Sale to roll out August 1: A look at top deals

Flipkart has announced that its 2025 Freedom Sale will go live on August 1 for Plus subscribers, with access opening to all users from August 2. Early access remains one of the key benefits of Flipkart Plus, along with additional savings such as a 10 per cent discount when using Super Coins on top of existing sale prices. The platform is expected to roll out various bank offers and price drops across categories. Flipkart has teased 78 deals under banners like 'Freedom Deals,' 'Rush Hours,' 'Exchange Hours,' 'Tick Tock Deals,' and 'Budget Deals,' which will feature electronics and household appliances at reduced prices. While full details are still under wraps, competition with Amazon ahead of Independence Day is expected to be intense. The Flipkart app gives us a slight glimpse of what might go under huge discounts before the sale goes live. Laptops with Intel i5 might go on sale from prices starting at Rs 35,999. During the Goat sale iPhone 16 had a significant discount, and if users missed the offer this sale might be their chance to purchase it. The app displays that iPhone 16 might also receive a significant discount, and Samsung 4K TVs might also receive a discount and would likely start from Rs 20,000. The app also indicates that a wide range of household appliances — from stoves to washing machines — will be available at significant discounts. Two-wheelers, too, are also expected to go on sale, with price cuts on ex-showroom rates. Beauty and healthcare products will also see markdowns. One of the confirmed bank offers includes an instant 15 per cent discount on select purchases, though details about eligible banks and conditions are yet to be announced. Flipkart's earlier GOAT Sale 2025 featured substantial discounts, especially on the latest iPhone 16 series. The model, originally priced at Rs 79,900, was available for Rs 69,999. Other high-value deals included price drops on laptops, the Samsung Galaxy S24, and the Nothing Phone 3a Pro. Based on that trend, similar steep discounts are expected during the upcoming Freedom Sale.

Alphabet sees increase in net profit, says recently launched AI Mode on Google 'going well' in India

The company's revenue grew 14 per cent year-over-year to $96.4 billion, largely fueled by strong Google Cloud sales. The increase in the tech giant's profit is attributable to the launch of Alphabet's AI model, which has been 'going well'. Alphabet's performance in the previous quarter was driven by the expansion of its cloud computing division and the positive impact of its AI products. 'We had a standout quarter, with robust growth across the company. We are leading at the frontier of AI and shipping at an incredible pace. AI is positively impacting every part of the business, driving strong momentum,' CEO Sundar Pichai said. The cloud division proved to be a major driver of growth, with revenue increasing 32 per cent from the previous year to $13.62 billion. Cloud platform and AI emerge as stars of the show Alphabet has been witnessing a boom, and the credit goes to the high demand for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and an expansion of its core products like AI infrastructure and generative AI solutions. To keep up with rising demand for its cloud products and AI-driven services, Alphabet has raised its capital expenditure forecast for 2025. The company now plans to invest around $85 billion this year, up from its earlier estimate of $75 billion. Anat Ashkenazi, chief financial officer (CFO) of Alphabet, said, 'Our updated outlook reflects additional investment in servers, the timing of delivery of servers, and an acceleration in the pace of data centre construction, primarily to meet cloud customer demand.' The company's end-to-end AI search experience on Google, AI Mode, has been launched in the US and India, and 'has received positive feedback'. AI Overview on Google now has over 2 billion monthly users in more than 200 countries. Still, some analysts warned that the higher spending may draw fresh scrutiny from investors, who have largely stayed on the sidelines this year. Alphabet shares are up just 0.5 per cent in 2025, trailing Microsoft's 20 per cent increase and a 22 per cent rise in Meta stock, also held back by regulatory battles that are looking to break its illegal monopoly in the search and ad-tech markets. Microsoft Copilot now has a face: Here's how the AI chatbot looks like

Microsoft is giving Copilot, its generative AI-powered chatbot, a face. Part of the tech giant's new Copilot Appearance experiment, the tech giant says the new feature gives users 'a new, visual way to chat with Copilot.' Available as an early preview in Copilot Labs, the new feature brings real-time facial expressions, adds non-verbal cues and gives Copilot's voice mode a conversational memory. This means that the AI chatbot can now respond to your voice inputs with a smile, nod and other gestures. And while Copilot uses the same voice as you have asked it to, the experiment currently seems to be limited to the web version of the AI chatbot, as Microsoft is yet to announce any plans to bring Copilot Appearance to the Windows and mobile app. To use the new feature, all you have to do is enter Voice mode by clicking on the microphone icon, head over to Voice Settings and turn on the toggle named 'Copilot Appearance.' Now, if you ask Copilot a question or just say 'hi', Copilot will react and talk back to you with smiles, gestures and other expressions. Microsoft's AI team, led by Mustafa Suleyman, has been working on making Copilot a personalised conversational AI assistant. In an episode of The Colin & Samir Show that was aired this week, Suleyman said, 'Copilot will certainly have a kind of permanent identity, a presence, and it will have a room that it lives in, and it will age.' Suleyman had previously shared a glimpse of Copilot Appearance earlier this year at Microsoft's 50th Anniversary event. The feature is currently live for select users living in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, but it is still unclear if and when it will be rolling out worldwide. Microsoft has had a history of trying to bring its digital assistants to life. The company's most famous animated assistant was Clippy, which was often criticised for not being helpful and was instead labelled as intrusive by many.
