Drains along M.G. Road in Kochi to be renovated to increase carrying capacity

The Hindu3 days ago
Drains along M.G. Road will be widened enough to increase their carrying capacity to accommodate water from intense spells of rain within a short period as experienced during recent years.
This will be one of the works to be undertaken by the Public Works department (PWD) using the ₹10 crores to be sanctioned under Operation Breakthrough (OBT). Renovated drains with footpath atop and twin duct for utilities, including one exclusively for the KSEB, will be part of the works. The PWD will seek technical sanction once the amount is credited to its account.
Out of the 9.40-km stretch of M.G. Road, 2.60 km from Pharmacy Junction is likely to be covered in the initial phase. The PWD prefers a left side-oriented work considering that more shops are on that side, and, therefore, pedestrians are also likely to be more there.
'M.G. Road has traditionally suffered from lack of flow of water through the drain leading to waterlogging warranting slope correction. Also, the unscientific installation of prefabricated drains on an existing drain has affected the proper drainage of water into the drains, which also need to be corrected. Missing slabs on the footpath also need to be replaced,' said Mayor M. Anilkumar.
The works will be carried out in accordance with a detailed project report (DPR) for drains along M.G. Road, prepared by the PWD two years ago after the Mayor wrote to the Public Works Minister. However, as per the DPR, the total cost of the works is ₹16 crore. 'A meeting will be held with the Minister to explore ways to secure the remaining ₹6 crore needed to complete the project,' said Mr. Anilkumar.
A proposal worth around ₹20 crores for laying an eastern-centric outlet to discharge water from the drains directly to the backwaters also remains pending. At present, the discharge outlet through M.G. Road is west-centric. The proposal is to draw an outlet from near the South railway station across M.G. Road directly to the backwaters through DH Road.
A majority of OBT works have been focused on the restoration of Mullassery Canal, resolving waterlogging near High Court Junction, and the construction of a culvert at Kammattipadam.

Delhi govt appoints PWD nodal officer to fast-track 5G, broadband infra rollout

NEW DELHI: In a major push to strengthen broadband infrastructure and accelerate 5G deployment in the city, Delhi government has appointed a nodal officer within the Public Works Department (PWD) to coordinate with the State Broadband Committee. The committee, functioning under the Ministry of Communication, addresses challenges faced by telecom service providers in setting up towers and laying optical fibre cables in urban areas. This move comes after a meeting held last year where central authorities asked departments like the PWD to designate officials responsible for handling connectivity-related clearances. 'The newly appointed nodal officer will focus on clearing pending permissions related to Right of Way (RoW)' a key requirement for laying underground optical fibre and erecting telecom towers,' officials said. To streamline infrastructure, the committee has directed the Urban Development Department to ensure that all agencies planning excavation work inform the relevant authorities beforehand.

Kochi canal rejuvenation project gains momentum

KOCHI: Kochi Mayor M Anilkumar on Friday said the canal rejuvenation programme started under the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) project is gaining momentum. The Rs 3,716 crore project includes revitalisation of six major canals in Kochi, inland transportation and tourism. 'The project aims to strengthen water transport systems, construct attractive landscaping and walkways along canal banks, improve water quality by removing accumulated waste in the canals, make water flow smooth, and protect the aquatic ecosystem,' Anilkumar said. The Rs 8.4-crore project prepared for the cleaning of Chilavannur canal is set to be launched, he said, adding that the plan for the beautification of the banks of the Chilavannur canal has been submitted for KIIFB approval. 'The plan is to create a walkway and beautiful public spaces along the banks. The stream flowing from the international stadium joins the Chilavannur stream. The Chettichira bridge on Subhash Chandra Bose Road is very narrow, and thus Rs 4.51 crore has been spent on its reconstruction,' he said. The Kochi corporation and the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) have also decided to organise a meeting on the project. It will be attended by Industries Minister P Rajeeve and other people's representatives.

This measure aims to minimize disruption and inconvenience to the public, officials said further. The Delhi government has also directed telecom operators to expedite the rollout of 5G services, particularly in central parts of the city, including the New Delhi area. This directive aligns with the national goal of achieving comprehensive 5G coverage across major urban centers.
