4 cabin crew and a passenger were injured when their United Airlines flight was hit by severe turbulence
The incident emerged after the Federal Aviation Administration filed a report about it on Tuesday.
United Airlines Flight 1 travelled from San Francisco to Singapore on March 26 — a 16-hour redeye flight.
It was in the Philippines' airspace, about 12 hours from San Francisco, when the incident occurred.
According to the FAA's report, the Boeing 787 was carrying 174 passengers and 14 crew members when it encountered severe turbulence.
One passenger and three cabin crew members sustained minor injuries, while one cabin crew member was seriously injured.
It isn't yet clear precisely what type of injuries they sustained.
United and the FAA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The risks of turbulence have come under more scrutiny since an incident last May when a Singapore Airlines passenger died. Another 71 people were injured.
Korean Air has announced it will stop serving instant noodles in a bid to prevent burn accidents caused by turbulence.
It said turbulence had "become a persistent and growing problem in recent years," adding that the number of incidents had doubled between 2024 and 2019.
The airline also suggested climate change had had an impact, citing "large temperature differences between altitudes."
Turbulence is created when differences in wind speed result in more friction between air molecules. The warming climate imparts more energy into the air, which creates more friction.
This is especially notable around the jet streams, where clear-air turbulence is most prevalent.
"Climate change is making encounters with clear air turbulence more likely and more severe," Guy Gratton, an associate professor of aviation and the environment at Cranfield University, previously told BI.
In a 2023 study, researchers from the University of Reading found turbulence was getting more common over the North Atlantic, around the north polar jet stream.
At a typical point, the most severe type of clear-air turbulence increased by 55% between 1979 and 2020, the study found.

United Airlines Suspending Major Route
The travel industry has been on a wild ride this year, and travel, in general, has been lower than expected. Looking at U.S. airline traffic data for April 2025 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, "U.S. airlines carried 80.4 million systemwide scheduled service passengers in April 2025." They add that "when adjusted for seasonality, April enplanements are down 2.2% from March and down 4.0% from the all-time high reached in December 2024." So, travel is down, and that means routes are getting adjusted. Other routes are getting changed not due to lack of demand but because of other reasons, too. Now, United Airlines is planning to suspend a route starting this September. According to a piece published on July 23 by Luke Diaz of Simply Flying, "As politics increasingly influence the global aviation network, United Airlines has notified the United States Department of Transportation that it will suspend its sole service route between Cuba and the U.S. this September." Diaz adds that the move comes after the current administration's signing of the National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM), signed on June 30, 2025. 'The hardline travel policy states intent to 'restore and strengthen' the U.S. government's position against Cuba," reversing the previous administration's policy that eased restrictions, according to Diaz. Flights between Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Havana's José Martí International Airport (HAV) will officially stop on September 2, 2025, according to Aviation Week. "In a filing to the DOT, United said that it would use seasonal flexibility already granted by the department to pause service through the end of the winter 2025-26 season," David Casey of Aviation Week states in a July 22 feature. "However, the airline also requested a formal waiver of dormancy conditions—if deemed necessary—to preserve its rights to resume the route no later than the start of the summer 2026 season." Alaska Airlines gains cargo momentum from Hawaiian integration
Alaska Airlines has already surpassed initial cargo volume targets since launching its first international widebody service, from Seattle to Tokyo Narita airport, on May 12 as the company continues to reap the fruits of its September merger with Hawaiian Airlines, executives said Thursday during a quarterly earnings presentation. Alaska Air (NASDAQ: ALK) is operating daily nonstop service to Tokyo with Boeing 787-9 passenger jets from Hawaiian's fleet. Carrying cargo in the lower deck is driving the equivalent of 30 passenger seats worth of revenue per flight, according to management. The Alaska Air Group reported $136 million in cargo revenue during the second quarter, a 34% increase from the same period in 2024. The revenue gains include the Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Amazon cargo lines of business as compared to those three business units before the merger. Legacy Alaska Air Cargo second-quarter revenue increased 15% to $80 million. The carrier has effectively backfilled most of the cargo volume displaced by repositioning the 787s from Honolulu to Seattle, according to the company. Meanwhile, Alaska brought into service the final two of 10 Airbus A330 converted freighters operating under contract with Amazon to support its package delivery network. The Amazon business was inherited from Hawaiian Airlines, which began flying for the online retailer in late 2023. Alaska Airlines and Amazon are both based in Seattle. The acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines for $1.9 billion gave Alaska Airlines access to widebody aircraft for the first time and more cargo capacity on domestic and international routes. In the nine months since Alaska Airlines combined with Hawaiian Airlines, the air cargo teams have worked to integrate their operations and systems, and improve processes for customers shipping to more than 130 cargo destinations. 'We're bullish on where we can go with this as we combine the two networks,' said Jason Berry, who heads Alaska's cargo business and also serves as president of regional subsidiary Horizon Air. Alaska will begin passenger and cargo service from the Seattle gateway to Seoul, South Korea, on Sept. 12 and launch its first transatlantic route to Rome next May. Alaska Air Cargo in late March introduced sharing booking across the combined Alaska and Hawaiian cargo network. Shipments that originate on Alaska Air and continue on Hawaiian Airlines, or vice versa, can now be booked and tracked by customers on a single air waybill. Alaska is also working to co-locate cargo operations at stations served by both Alaska and Hawaiian, allowing customers to pick up and drop off shipments at a single location. Stations at New York JFK and Seattle, for example, were combined in early this year, according to company announcements. Three of six daily nonstop flights between Seattle and Honolulu now operate with Airbus A330 Hawaiian widebody jets, offering increased cargo capacity. Alaska Airlines has also increased capacity for the Alaska fishing season — which runs from June 12 until Aug. 15 — by deploying A330 aircraft between Seattle and Anchorage twice daily to take advantage of the aircraft's larger belly hold. Overall, Alaska Air beat analysts' expectations on the top and bottom lines, with revenue of $3.7 billion (up 2.1%) and earnings per share of $1.78 versus a consensus prediction of $1.44. Solid demand, especially in the premium segment, CEO Ben Minicucci noted that the Hawaiian Airlines segment produced a quarterly profit for the first time since 2019, underscoring the power of combining the two carriers. Repositioning more A330 passenger jets to fly from Seattle to Honolulu and Anchorage has maximized asset utilization and improved the bottom line, he said. Southwest misses profit expectations as weak domestic demand erodes fares
(Reuters) -Southwest Airlines missed Wall Street estimates for second-quarter profit on Wednesday, pressured by weak domestic travel demand that has led to more empty seats and softer fares. Shares of the carrier were down 2% in aftermarket trading. The budget carrier reported an adjusted profit per share of 43 cents, compared with analysts' average expectations of 51 cents, according to data compiled by LSEG. In April, several major U.S. carriers scrapped their financial forecasts, citing uncertainty linked to President Donald Trump's broad tariff measures and government spending cuts, which pressured consumers to scale back travel plans. Since then, airline executives and analysts have signaled that demand trends and the broader travel environment are showing signs of steadiness. Even so, the domestic market remains under pressure, with cost-conscious travelers continuing to exercise caution as household budgets tighten. Summer, typically the peak money-making season for airlines, is falling short this year as sluggish demand for standard economy seats forces carriers to cut fares, undermining their pricing power. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have seen strong revenue gains from premium cabins, buoyed by affluent travelers willing to pay for upgrades. By contrast, low-cost carriers such as Southwest, which relies heavily on standard economy seats, are under pressure to maintain profitability as price-sensitive travelers remain cautious with discretionary spending. Southwest reported operating revenue of $7.24 billion in the quarter through June, compared with $7.35 billion a year earlier.
